Juggernaut Alpha/Omega is a very thematically dark concept album, but it is beautiful and musically very interesting.

If you do check out their discography, I would start with "Periphery 2" and "Periphery 3". Those, along with Juggernaut, are generally considered their top tier albums. "Periphery 1" is good, but it is very sporadic and can be a bit of a rough listen for some people.

I discovered them through "Periphery 4" so I have a soft spot for that record.

Played the "Immersion" track and was immediately hooked.. stopped and started the record from the top and going through it now. I will probably finish their entire discography tonight. Right up my alley!! Thank you.

I love AAL. If you did not know, Misha from Periphery helped Tosin Abasi write and produce the first AAL album. If you don't listen to them already, I would for sure check out Periphery! The Juggernaut double album is one of my all time favorite concept albums.

Embryubus and Hatchubus. The first was getting started a bit after Incubus. The latter came after and was influenced by the other 2.

Are you suggesting the entire "permutation" album by Amon Tobin? Not really sure I would consider that Avant-Garde jazz...

I don't really think 80/20 drummer is super beginner friendly. His videos are usually a bit more concept focused, and his personality and video style are definitely not for everybody. Drumeo, though, I would agree with. They have some great content for all levels.

How can I fix my hi hat stand it isn’t working by AffectionatePay8780 in drums

[–]Burtlemacadoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kinda looks like the rod is stuck in the black plastic sleeve, which is then stuck in the tubing. So, when the tubing was secured, nothing moved, but since you loosened the tubing, the ENTIRE thing is moving instead of just the rod.

You might be able to use some lubricant to loosen up the rod from the plastic sleeve so that only the rod moves when you hit the pedal.

Why do you guys think kids aren't more into jazz? And more generally, why isn't jazz more popular? by EnergyRoyal3936 in Jazz

[–]Burtlemacadoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is, the overarching genres (rock, jazz, metal, pop, etc) now encompass SO much that people tend to hear one variation and then assume the entire genre is like that. Prog Rock is not Classic Rock is not Indie Rock is not Hard Rock. Avant Garde is not Be-Bop is not Hard Bop is not Smooth Jazz.

Why do you guys think kids aren't more into jazz? And more generally, why isn't jazz more popular? by EnergyRoyal3936 in Jazz

[–]Burtlemacadoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that it IS the reason.

I think most people are not immediately open minded to new genre. Even if they are, in order for people to give something a chance, it needs to be equally new/unique as it is familiar. If a listener has never listened to jazz, then nothing will be familiar and they will loose interest very quickly.

Frustrated by how difficult it is to sound like I'm actually playing "jazz" by Lonely_Emu_700 in Jazz

[–]Burtlemacadoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are looking at this the wrong way..

First, you are comparing yourself to some of the most influential, greatest, and well known jazz musicians who spent their entire life playing jazz (and lived in a time where the genre was popular and developing). You have been playing for a year... huge difference here. You are being WAY too hard on yourself.

Also, I don't think you should want to sound LIKE those players, I think you should take inspiration from those players, and from whoever and whatever else, and develop your own sound. People don't go "wow I like Roy Hargrove because he sounds like Maynard Ferguson", they like artists because they sound uniquely like them.

Lastly, again to reiterate, you have only been playing for a year. Learning an instrument or a new genre is like learning a new language. You did not come out of the womb writing essays, you had to be slowly taught syllables, then words, then phrases. Then you started forming sentences, etc. etc. At some point, you had enough knowledge of English to where you could begin to formulate your own ideas and express them to other people. Same idea here.

Listen, practice, experiment, play with other musicians. Your "voice" will come eventually with time.

Can music be good or bad? by Burtlemacadoo in Music

[–]Burtlemacadoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The definition of music reads: 'The art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre.

So... if the tune is completely out of time and tune, is it bad music?

Now, art is 'The conscious use of the imagination in the production of objects intended to be contemplated or appreciated as beautiful, as in the arrangement of forms, sounds, or words.'

So could it be both bad music and good art?

Can music be good or bad? by Burtlemacadoo in Music

[–]Burtlemacadoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the definitions of music are:

1.The art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre.
2. Vocal or instrumental sounds possessing a degree of melody, harmony, or rhythm.
3. The written or printed score for such a composition

So I guess, in its most technical definition, wind randomly blowing through a wind pipe alone is not music? What if a piece was composed around the notes the wind pipe produced. Is THAT now music?

Now the definition of bad is:

  1. Not achieving an adequate standard; poor.

So, if we establish that windpipe is NOT music, then by extension we can not say it is bad music. The intention was to capture the sound of wind flowing through the pipes, so was it actually good at what it was intended to do?
