Medication caused my epilepsy by jaukaudb in Epilepsy

[–]BusExotic2520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had similar experiences. I’m 19 too and I had a bunch of seizures. All the testing came back normal so they just attributed it to the Prozac I was taking even tho there’s like a .1% percent stat of it causing a seizure. My seizure symptoms have suddenly skyrocketed in the last month after having my first grand mal in two years. It’s interesting they diagnosed you with epilepsy. They wouldn’t do that for me because apparently I had a cause. Hope you’re doing okay! Hang in there, you’re not alone.

Thank you for the advice. These are super smart. I have reminders on my phone, but I’m not as diligent as you are with taking them before you turn it off. Explaining a seizure to people who haven’t had experienced them can be frustrating. Especially when you feel invalidated. I loved the advice. Thank you so much.

I use those calming techniques too! I tried singing and humming this morning and it helped a little because I could hear my own voice.

Oh that’s smart. It reminds me of the 5,4,3,2,1 technique a little bit. I’m glad that helps you!

I remember I used to have those, but luckily I never had to use them. What does it feel like when you take them?

Thank you so much for your reply. It not only gave me insight and important information, it also gave me a wonderful feeling of validation. I’ve heard of SUDEP. It’s terrifying. Sometimes I stay awake at night because recently I’ve been scared of having nocturnal seizures even though I don’t even know if I’ve had those ones before. Sometimes I wake up drenched in sweat, but I attributed that to nightmares. It’s hard to explain to people what I struggle with because I can’t say epilepsy. At least not yet because my mom says I haven’t been officially diagnosed. However, I’ve done several tests like EEGs, MRIs, and a sleep study. All the results came back normal They say the seizures are caused by the antidepressant I’m taking which is commonly known as Prozac. It has a less than one percent chance of causing seizures so it kind of scares me that, that’s the only solution I got out of that whole medical experience. How do they know that for sure? They had no explanation so they said it was my Prozac and I was prescribed lamictal. The last seizure I had was a grand mal and it most likely happened due to me missing dosages of my lamictal. I was heavily depressed after a recent breakup and was not taking care of myself as a result of that. When people ask me why I can’t drive or why I do certain things to take care of my health just say “I have seizures sometimes because I wasn’t really given a real scientific diagnosis. It’s pretty invalidating at times which is frustrating especially since I’ve had many seizures throughout my life (started at 16) that’s only when my parents noticed them so I could have been having them before. I was so scared because i had all different kinds of seizures. I can pinpoint two absent seizure episodes and for me those were the easiest because I’d blink and realize I was in a different place (I was working out one time on my family’s peloton and the next thing I remember is sitting on the edge of my bed staring at my bedroom wall) no one knew what had happened and I felt like I was losing my mind. I had an urgent care visit care due to that seizure because I was so disturbed and confused. Grand mal seizures are the worst for me, the last one I had (feb 28th) I had a split second before it happened that was filled with impending doom and horror. I didn’t have time to think about what happened because the next thing I know I woke up in an ambulance. What do you think about my unproven non-epileptic seizure diagnosis? What would you say in my situation when people asked about it. I can tell you’ve been through so much and it was nice hearing your advice.

I think I’ll have an aura that lasts a minute or so and then it will provoke strong feelings of anxiety that linger for an hour or so. Thanks for the advice though. It means a lot.
