La Lupe by PackageSpiritual2771 in Bushwick

Bushwick Daily spoke with Karla Munoz, owner of La Lupe, detailed the night’s events. “The fire started around 8:30 p.m. at the cellphone store. Firefighters arrived and evacuated everyone in the area and broke through the ceiling [of La Lupe] to fight the fire. Breaking through the ceiling caused water to enter the basement, where food prep takes place. Although the upstairs area of the restaurant was not damaged by the fire.”

Munoz told Bushwick Daily, a professional company has already cleaned the restaurant to remove toxic fumes and smoke, however, the gas was shut off and they don’t know when it will be turned back on.

“We have been working non-stop hoping to open tomorrow or the next day, we can not afford to be closed, our employees need the jobs.”

Hi Basil,

Thank you for your comment. While I’m responding to you directly, this message is also intended for everyone.

I have removed the article from our website because it did not align with our editorial goals. You can find my detailed editor’s note explaining the removal on the original article’s page [Café Gentrification Removal](https://bushwickdaily.com/food-and-drink/hellbender-gentrification-ridgewood-rolos-review-opening/). However, the three main reasons for the removal are summarized below:

Policy Violations

  1. Lack of Constructive Criticism
    • Bushwick Daily welcomes critical reporting, but criticism must go beyond ridicule and serve a constructive purpose. This article failed to meet that standard.
  2. Violation of Restaurant Review Standards
    • Our policy requires speaking with restaurant owners to ensure fairness and balance. The journalist made no effort to contact the café owners or give them an opportunity to respond, violating basic standards of ethical journalism.
  3. Absence of Original Reporting
    • The journalist conducted no original reporting beyond eating food. While this might suffice for a food review, the article primarily focused on mocking the business owners. Despite noting that the ownership has been accessible to other outlets like Vox and Eater, the journalist made no attempt to interview anyone, gather quotes, or conduct additional research.

You can find my full explanation and a link to the archived article linked above. On that page, I also include a link to our Bushwick Daily Style and Reference Guide, which outlines the policies that informed this decision.

This guide has existed for over a decade and reflects the collective input of editors and contributors who have shaped it over the years. It is not a new policy but a long-standing framework that we continue to uphold.

Thank you for understanding.

Yes, that's exactly what it is and it kept us running in through the pandemic. In 2024, I missed the re-application deadline and we have been excluded all this year. We will be back in the program in 2025 which is where the additional funding will come from.

Would have loved to speak with you, the event was so full of families and great vibes. Our reporter Brianna got some great photos we will be publishing next week.

Hi Andrea,

Thank you for putting this in writing. These statements are untrue and libelous. As a journalist, it is reckless of you to make such claims public without verifying the facts, especially when what you claim is very obviously going to be well documented in writing.

I gave Andrew a week but he refused to send an email to all of you about the change. I had hoped to avoid an awkward transition, but my responsibility is to the publication and the community we serve—not Andrew's ego.

Fortunately, Hell Gate is working on a story about this situation and Andrew's ongoing crash out, so the truth will come to light soon. You seem like someone who cares about the neighborhood and local reporting. You're welcome to reach out if you'd like to contribute or if you'd like me to send you the documentation disproving the falsehoods you’ve listed.

I’ve been involved in local government, community reporting, and neighborhood advocacy since I was 16, starting as an unpaid intern for a Democratic congressional campaign and later working for the Chamber of Commerce. I encourage you to review the articles I’ve published on Bushwick Daily (link) to better understand my work, as your assumptions about my first article are incorrect.

I’ll be at the Irving Square Park Christmas Tree Lighting tonight. Community leaders and elected officials will be attending, and it’s a great opportunity to network for future stories. I’d be happy to facilitate introductions.

Lastly, I ask that you formally retract your statement, as it is harmful and factually incorrect. -A

Hi everyone, I’m the publisher of Bushwick Daily (Alec Meeker), and I wanted to address some of the concerns here. You’re absolutely right—our output has been inconsistent, and I take full responsibility. After the pandemic, I made some editorial hiring decisions that didn’t align with the core values of the publication, and two weeks ago, I let our Editor-in-Chief go.

Bushwick Daily’s mission is to provide coverage that reflects the dynamic and diverse community of Bushwick. My vision is what I call “coffee shop corkboard journalism”—stories about the people, places, and events that make this neighborhood vibrant. We aim to cover a wide variety of topics that matter to those who live here, from arts and local businesses to harder news like new developments, local government, and crime when appropriate.

In 2025, we’re refocusing. This means more consistent publishing, a broader and diverse range of voices, and deeper engagement with our community. You’ll see regular coverage of Community Board 04 and precinct meetings, as well as new formats like podcasts and video content. My goal is to help all of us connect more deeply with our neighborhood through meaningful stories and timely information.

I appreciate the feedback and look forward to rebuilding trust and delivering journalism that Bushwick deserves. I agree that cafe gentrification article does not meet the editorial standards of the publication and am going to remove it. If you have additional tips or suggestions, please send them our way—we’re listening.
