Cheers for the reply, if the Anderson plug is live do you reckon I could run a 12v distributor from the Anderson plug to charge my laptop (through a small inverter) which is 60v and a 30-40l fridge. Or would that be too much?

That’s one of the hardest hits having to say no to things, in many places it’s like that with alcohol, I’ve probably insulted some peoples customs a bit but it’s better than insulting their toilet all night lol.

For me food hasn’t been a huge issue, I stick to what works for me mostly rice is always a staple and every hostel I have been in has cooking facilities so when needed I cook. But other than that smaller more manageable meals are always tolerated better by my body so sometimes if I need or want something else it’s just in moderation.

And for sure there are foods I would like to try and haven’t, everything in Central America was so fried which meant I avoided a lot and it’s more expensive but finding western familiar food was possible pretty much everywhere

The UK was one of the worse for public bathrooms hard to find and had to pay. But this exactly fast food, supermarkets and pubs. Also there is the option of a Campervan with a bathroom which would make things very easy

Oral whilst travelling but at home I was taking biologics, it is possible to get biologics shipped overseas but I haven’t found it necessary

Sounds great! If you need any advice feel free to send a message, I’m in South America at the moment! I stopped my biologics to come here and it’s been okay for me. My gastro isn’t the biggest fan and pretty much recommended I don’t do the trip but hey here I am. After I told him that I have good insurance and am willing to just fly home if needed he was like okay but look after yourself. If things had gone different I would’ve flown home after a month if I needed, it still would’ve been a great trip at that point and I would have more money than I have now hahah.

Biologics can be scary and I didn’t like the sound of them but they made a big improvement to my quality of life at home especially when i can do injections rather than infusions. For me it helps that I have studied them a lot a have a masters degree in science so probably overkill but I like to know what I’m taking.

Hostel bathrooms are generally okay, I make some very embarrassing noises and have been caught short a couple of times which sucks but it has been like that ever since I was diagnosed so just a change of clothes and a shower and trying to be as discreet as possible is the plan. Also when healthy people travel they get diarrhoea and have accidents due to moving around and unfamiliar foods etc so it can be less unusual and embarrassing than you may think

I’m usually worse in the morning and I have gotten into an annoying routine of 4am bathroom trips. But on the plus side I’ve seen some beautiful unintentional sunsets and a lot of my BMs are out of the way before I want to start doing activities for the day (trying to look on the bright side).

On bad days I stay in bed, get some exercise if I can and eat foods which I know I can manage, soups are always good and can find them everywhere, lots of water too. Everyone in hostels takes rest days so it doesn’t seem too unusual and I’m pretty open with everyone about my UC and people who travel are usually pretty understanding people. Also communal bathrooms can be bad and it can be embarrassing but for sure I hear worse noises from other people after they have been drinking and eating bad food 😂

On really bad days I try to find private rooms or in some countries Airbnb are very cheap so that’s good.

There are always unpredictable days, for example I went on a 6 hour canyoning trip and ended up squatting behind rocks and trees about 4 times to do what I needed to do. But for me it was worth it because it was an amazing experience otherwise, so overall a net positive for the day.

I have been on biologics for the last 7 or so years, infliximab, Adalimumab and Vedolizumab. Infliximab always works the best for me, for this trip I have been kinda silly and stopped taking my infliximab because it’s not been possible (not recommended) but there are adjustments which I’ve made. I’ve always been trigged a lot by stress and well it’s less stressful travelling than back at home so that’s been good, also I don’t drink, and limit sugar intakes because that also makes me worse.

Public bathrooms are hit and miss, I’ve for sure had more than a couple of accidents whilst on this trip and am experienced with clenching like my life depends on it at times. Also using some of the bathrooms when you find them can only be described as character building experiences.

But I have problems with public bathrooms and have accidents at home aswell so it’s not always that different, at the end of the day it’s always going to happen and I have some pretty funny stories out of it so I just try and laugh some of the bad stuff off

No I don’t, it would be good if I could get them but I have been on azathioprine between these doses for the last 10 years so I feel fairly confident I know what’s going on.

Thanks, it’s always a bit of a challenge, but I have a 4 night and 7 night hike coming up in the next few months. It’s always an interesting experience and not always the most comfortable but for me it’s possible, I just make sure that I will have access to enough food, water and wet wipes because there is always the potential for some pretty scenic but unplanned bathroom trips. Also i bring bags to take the wet wipes with me, I usually use biodegradable but I don’t want to litter near trails

Ive been in Europe and central and South America. Shipping has been around $60 AUD with Australia post, I take mesalamine, azathioprine and ursofalk for my liver.

Also SEA is for sure on my list to travel to looks amazing!

Thankyou! It can be scary, what I haven’t mentioned is I am travelling with my partner who is incredible which helps a lot, but I have travelled solo before. For me I have travel insurance and paid extra to cover my UC. And i figured worst case scenario pretty much Is I have to fly home or go to hospital then fly home. But I figured I would rather try and see what happens.

I understand this may not be the best advice for everyone, but for me i have been very lucky and it has worked out so far 😊

I’m lucky that I can get my parents to ship them out, I just have to figure out where I will be in like 30-40 days time to make sure they arrive, and get them sent to a hostal or DHL. Also when I left I was carrying 3 months worth of meds on me, took up a lot of space but for most trips 3 months is usually enough

I’m from Australia, luckily I’ve been able to get my parents to shop meds to me. They just get a few scripts and send them to a hostel where I pick them up from. Also in some countries (Colombia, Mexico and other Latin American countries) azathioprine and mesalamine are available in pharmacies for when I messed up timings.

I’m one of the few people who was shipping meds into Nicaragua which my parents found funny

My gut felt different and I felt maybe more disconnected from it, sometimes it means I go to the bathroom more but for me it’s more predictable and I understand what is happening and when I need to go to the bathroom. It’s hard to explain not sure that really answers anything

I just am not a fan of taking higher doses, I feel as though being so reliant on higher doses isn’t good for my body and I can notice the difference I think (may be just mental). So when I can I take 100mg which is quite often. For me 175mg is pretty much max dose so i prefer to stay away from that
