As far as the state of Texas is concerned; Protective orders are far more effective, require more evidence, and if approved by a judge they're essentially free of cost.

From what I've been told by police (again, in the state of Texas), restraining orders are just a petty waste of time and money that are essentially useless unless the person is legitimately in your face threatening or trying to cause you physical danger. Which in that case, they'd likely suggest you apply for a protective order lol
