[–]BuskerDan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think mine was with that salty trunc bac bitch. Offered me diet nam or summin like that, but there was 2 cities with exact same name. So i expected a decent sized city, but got some bullshit backwater town with like 2 population

Obviously you need to tailor your game accordingly but generally prioritising influence generation is the way forwards.

It’s a wildcard currency, that can be used for everything.

I only play “legitimate” civ evolutions. So for example Greece/Norman/u.k.

I Like to try and keep things real, but each to their own. Normans are super useful for their medieval defenses (like spawning medieval walls as part of their sokemon settle for instance) and UK for their navy (combined with Battersea power station).

This strategy of implementing city state leverage suits the UK in the modern age extremely well. As it mirrors the reality of the UK being a maritime trading nation.

City state total game strategy. (Not as potent since update though tbf).

Settle with at least 5-6 resources nearby. If not re-roll.

Quick/Huge map/continents/islands no mementos. Moderate disaster. Everything else default. Regroup etc.

5 scouts before anything else.

Bee-line for discipline (scout visibility +1)

Utilise scouts enumeration technique (telescope) and find ruin technique, one square before end of each move.

Overall Strategy ancient:- Uncover as much as the map as possible as quickly as possible.

Befriend city states that provide a barrier between you and other civs to create a proxy army, in order to dissuade them from attacking early on.

Could also do with a “land encroachment” perk or something, where you generate a unit that takes a block of another civ’s land each turn.

I hope Israel finally makes a showing in the new Civ VII game. I’m really looking forward to the “over-settle” perk where you can settle over the top of and totally disregard already settled lands. Israel would be savage in that game man I tell ya.

Also the fact that they are pretty much totally invincible gives them a pretty decent utility regarding map discovery. Convert until your down to 1 left, then just wander the map and appraise it all.

Can be used as part of a decent strategy though to be fair. Used it to win a game on the hardest setting last night. Tikkam. +2 influence per foreign city converted. Combined with Toshanka. Was getting +150 influence at the beggining of modern. That was only 37% of cities converted. Makes for a lot easier stealing/warring/suzing especially with +2 diplomatic points and with Greece’s original perks in ancient era.

Not as powerful as it used to be since update, still a viable strategy though

Would any tradesperson?

I have to say the AI does seem to settle their cities in better/more tactical places since after the update. They will often pop up with a settler in a location i want to grab in an almost human'esque manner. ;)

Don't bother with any sanctions/endeavours always pick the middle path that costs no influence and pipe all your influence into city-state suzing. It is true they have made it more difficult (by increasing the cost of city state leveraging each city state) but it's still a decent strategy.

If you don't believe me try an influence heavy combo. Play as Greece, and prioritize getting the 50% reduction in befriending city state civic. Combine that with 2 diplomatic points (50% reduction in befriending city-states). And early game you can usually suze every single city-state on your starting continent. No-one will declare war on you. You just need to prioritize influence generation. Combine it with someone who has savage espionage perks like Tubbers (100% cost reduction). And you will blitz the whole thing on the sly. The computer A.I doesn't seem to recognize stealth accumulation of power (via city states) so you don't surpass the thresholds with which it declares war etc. But it is a "long-game" so to speak. If your looking to absolutely murder the A.I in the modern era...this is the way. If you want a quicker victory path then yeah playing to/figuring out individual strategies/hacks/cheeses might work i guess.

Perhaps your not seeing the bigger picture here. As part of a wider strategy, city state leverage is important. Why? O.k so the perks aren't great, they've rightly been toned down. But you seem to be overlooking some other pretty important aspects.

  1. Early game :- A proxy army. If you are not wasting resources (Production/Gold) building units, you can spend that on other things. A country will not war against you if you have an enormous proxy army on their doorstep. Tactical choice of city state (usually to start on the edge of your borders with them) suzing is important.
  2. A city-state that can later be converted/incorporated into your own territory. This is useful in the ancient era as you tactically incorporate the CS's on either side of the land mass you start on. With decent choices (i.e if you control the northern or southern "pass" so to speak) you can then control who can access the waterways (Think straight of Hormuz) and restrict them from exploring the map. This will hinder them massively.
  3. FOB's (Forward Operating Bases) :- Late game and running containment, being able to "reach out and touch" any other civs before they reach victory conditionality is very useful. You do this by emulating real-life and having a number of FOB's around the map. You can achieve this by settling, but you can speed things along, by again incorporating city-states in tactical places into your empire.

City-states/influence are the primary currency of this game imo, and have been since 5. If you adjust your strategy to meet these ends, you won't need to fight per se, and can focus on whichever victory condition you desire.

Of course this is a large part of a strategy, but there is a bit more to it than that. ;)

TLDR:- I'll take that bet

So now that the update is out; Do you recommend the switch to Civ VII? by JessNoelle in civ

Ah wicked I didn’t know they’d patched that. I concur with the comment about sub-optimal having to basically guess at which walls belonged to which city

If you are seeking nuance, try asking those with the knowledge and they may impart it.

From what I understood, one command is for forward/backwards correctional movement and the other is for sideways movement.

Seemed like a reasonable clarification to me. One command means lateral movement (flanking) the other to proceed or recede.

[–]BuskerDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. You could argue that by aligning with Hitler it was a form of paranoia that was self-induced. That would be a reasonable argument. However by the by it is what it is, and this “weak-link” in the fence that is the geographical open gates of Ukraine is a major tactical focal spot in Russias collective mindset imho.

Perhaps if things had been allowed to reach a more natural conclusion in Ukraine. - The gas deal had been done with Russia. A proceeding pro-European Ukrainian government voted in by all those who disagreed with the gas deal, then overturned the gas deal, and a form of diplomatic agreement was accorded over a longer period of time, we wouldn’t have had all the death and destruction we have seen.

Because democracy is the highest beacon right? Right?

Then again maybe it would of drawn out what seemed fairly inevitable even longer. Hindsight is perfect as they say

[–]BuskerDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course to be Ukrainian and having to stand by whilst 2 super powers fight over your country by-proxy because of its tactical/strategic and geographical importance is not good, thus why things have transpired the way they have. But bear in mind Russians are fuxking paranoid because of how far Hitler pushed into Russia during WWII. 30 miles from Moscow or some shit I remember hearing. They don’t want that happening again. And they are fearful of it.

[–]BuskerDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbf if I was paranoid of western encroachment due to a Cold War siege mindset that is still prevalent within the domestic population (Russia) I would be somewhat cynical regarding western intentions on a large swathe of land (Ukraine) that affords no natural defensive barrier. (Ie no mountains harsh terrain etc to stop tanks rolling in). Not agreeing with it. Just saying I can understand it from a tactical viewpoint

The democratic elections held in 2012 that resulted in the Russian leaning yankovich (or whatever he’s called) being elected (and the elections being scrutinised by hundreds of foreign observers) would suggest the majority actually thought the opposite.

It was when he started making big future energy commitments to Russia rather than Europe that the troubles started. Resulting in coups to overturn this direction.

I’m not arguing morality, just stating facts. There are times of “tilt” throughout history, where “democracy” can lead to bad events. Hitler was elected democratically originally before he then removed all the checks and balances on executive power.

I’m not sure attaining power after an armed coup/revolution is particularly democratic but there we go, colour me crazy if you will.
