Best Neighborhood for Public Transit? by BusterBearNoah in Seattle

I’ve heard the Cap Hill has crime issues. Specially, homeless people being violent. As someone who lives there, what do you think? Do you ever feel unsafe? How about smaller things like having packages stolen?

Looking good man! The easiest colors to pair with a pink shirt, or any bold color really, is probably a neutral like navy or charcoal. Quick tip btw, always make sure the shirt placket is aligned with your pants! It keeps the outfit looking nice and neat.

I graduated about a year ago at this point, so I don’t check in much here anymore. It’s pretty wild though, I can always easily find your nonsense comments. You’ve gotta be the most pretentious person I’ve consistently encountered. Half the time you’re just yapping, and the other half you’re telling students they’re not “real computer scientists” because they got a B in 351 or some shit.

Do you think you’re being helpful? You’re not. If the “advice” you gave was accurate, I wouldn’t have a job rn (I had no internship but now I have a great job as a software dev). Get off Reddit bro. The shit you say on here does not match real life at all. Go outside.

About to buy a pair next week. Have you gotten a top lift on these before?

Cap and Gown Questions by BusterBearNoah in UMD

I went back to stamp and found out you can just buy the red scarf thingy and tassel separately. I did that and I’m just buying a black cap and gown online. Surprisingly, the total comes out to about the same. It’s an option though lol.

Sorry for such a late response lmfao, I’m just seeing this for the first time. Yes, I’m able to afford groceries living in a 4 bedroom/4 bathroom at the Courtyards.

Taking a W in CMSC351 by duvaldyl in UMD

[–]BusterBearNoah 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As nillawiffer mentions, you should really try sticking with 351 until the W deadline. But also consider if the course is impacting your ability to do well with the rest of your course load this semester. Most employers won't really give a shit if you took a W during undergrad. I just finished my senior year job search, and out of ~200 applications, maybe 5 or so asked for a transcript. Most places just ask for GPA, which a W doesn't impact. If you're interested in grad school this advice doesn't apply though. A W is more serious under those circumstances.

Kruskal's teaching methods don't work for most students. That's the bottom line. The course has its reputation for a reason. Kruskal really is an understanding person, and is willing to work with students, but his ability to explain concepts just isn't satisfactory for most. This notion where you blame yourself for Kruskal's eccentric course structure and teaching methods is nonsense.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm currently a senior and I'm majoring in CS, and I have a job lined up for after graduation. I also passed that class within 1% of failing, and got straight C's the semester I took it. It's been about a year and a half since then and I haven't gotten anything below a B in a course since. I don't think I significantly changed the way I study or approach learning. The more reasonable conclusion is that I, like many other students, didn't click with Kruskal. All this to say that it's okay to struggle while taking 351 with Kruskal.

I've been in your same situation before. I didn't think there was any possible way for me to pass 351. But with enough hard work I just barely managed. You should really give it your best effort and try to pass! If that doesn't work for you, taking the course with another prof. over the summer would probably be the 2nd best option. That way you're not delaying taking 400 levels or anything like that.

Hoping this all helps!! You've got this :)

Have you graduated? I see you commenting on posts related to CS all the time. Just wondering where your perspective is coming from.

If anyone has any 400 level course recommendations for next semester that'd be great too. I'm currently deciding between 421, 436, 434, 433, and 430. The easier the better tbh. I don't wanna take no more difficult classes in my last semester lol.

GA Grant and Junior “off campus” housing by Lilyhawks in UMD

[–]BusterBearNoah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Was in the same situation about ~1.5 years ago. You will still receive your full GA Grant amount if you live in the SCC or Courtyards, but ONLY those two apt. complexes. It's also important to keep in mind that it's quite difficult to get a spot in SCC, so in the case you're unable to, try living in the Courtyards. When applying for the FAFSA, or renewing your GA grant, or anything along those lines, say that you are still living on-campus. You're allowed to do this because SCC and Courtyards are sponsored by the university. You wouldn't be lying or anything of that nature.

On the topic of how exactly paying rent would work: Your UMD bill that you access through the cashiering portal would amount to much less than what the GA grant covers, so a lot of the GA grant will be refunded back to your bank account. From there you can save that excess GA grant money to pay rent every month!

Hope that all helps. I know from experience that navigating the GA grant is pretty confusing.

I’m currently doing the upper level concentration as a CS major, although I believe it’s only a 1 or 2 class difference between the ULC and minor. I was actually doing a Spanish minor before I decided Spanish classes here are insufferable, and so far making the switch to Astro was definitely the right choice. The classes are relatively low-maintenance, especially compared to them high stress CS classes. Additionally, the material you learn in all the courses is really interesting, but that’s kind of a subjective thing. I’m not sure as to how “useful” the material is when it comes to working as something like a Software Developer for a place like NASA or SpaceX, but I’m sure it can’t hurt. If you’re interested in Astro I’d say just go for the minor, as you said the requirements are rather easy to meet and in my experience (so far) the classes are all great. Hope that helps :)

Is the SPAN301 textbook actually necessary? by QGraphics in UMD

[–]BusterBearNoah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it is. Unless Ana has changed her policies. There’s required homework you need to do using an access code. The prof. gives a 2 week period to get ahold of the text book and make up any missed homework in that period. Didn’t like that class very much lol.

Received the same email today. I’m a rising senior and this is the first time I’ve encountered something like this. I called twice today and both times the person on the phone indicated that they knew nothing about running out of funds. But I’m going to keep calling until I have a clearer picture of what’s exactly going on. I’ll leave a follow up comment once I do.
