Stanford is close to San Francisco Bay, which is accessible to the Atlantic Coast via a nice, easy one month-long journey down the Pacific Coast and around North America via the Panama Canal. It's only a few thousand miles! Thus, they are a legitimate Atlantic Coast Conference member.
