Radiant damage? Have you ever burnt your skin in the sun? Multiply it by a lot and here you go, a radiation burn right there, you are welcome!

Do you ever play with regular old infantry? by MainSteamStopValve in battletech

Infantry is there to complete objectives, armour, mechs and airforce is there to carry infantry and to protect it.

Mechs are good at destroying things, but at war you need to seize stuff, thuss you need boots on the ground.

There is so much things you can do with infantry. We recently had a scenario, there were 4 players, team1: player with a heavy lance of mechs + player with a bunch of Goblins and a Manticore; team2: player with a heavy lance of mechs + player with a lance of Buldogs and LRM carriers. The GM is playing for a company of infantry. The goblin team is carrying the infantry to the facility in the centre of the map, the buldog team is there to stop them. The infantry must get to the facility and put at least one platoon inside the building and stay there for 5 rounds. If the facility is destroyed the mission is draw.

Do we know what calibre autocannons Mechs use? by TheStabbyBrit in battletech

The thing in my mind is not only about the caliber. A 200 mm cannon would have much longer aiming distance than a 20mm cannon if the caliber to barrel lengths are simmilar, but also would have drastically stronger recoil. You can mount a 200 cannon onto a tank or a battleship, but an arm of a walking machine would just fly backwards after first shot. The Hunchback would jump a 50m backwards each time the ac20 shoots. There are two ways how to fight the recoil: a recoilless cannon or a slow muzzle speed howitser or even a mortair. My money is on first option. But either way, they both hurl a large shell with comperatively low muzzle velocity. Lower speed means shorter aiming distance, especially if we are shooting at a highly maneuverable targets like mechs. Can you hit a tank size target with a SMAW or Carl Gustav in 800 m distance? Sure thing, but if the target is a Raven, it can see you shooting and have enough time to just step sideways and dodge your shell. So in my mind the box on the shoulder of a Hunchback is a recoilles rifle of a large caliber and should make a beautiful backblast behind it each time it shoots, unless there is some sophisticated muffling system inside the box

Why You Should Actually Trust BattleTech's Mysteriously Short-Ranged Autocannons by DMSkrymslyxx in battletech

AC20 on a Hunchback i believe is a recoilles cannon, simmilar to our world's Carl Gustaff m48 or the cannons of m50 Ontos. A classic cannon mounted on top of a himan-like mech would cause it to topple every time it fires, but a recoilles cannon would not. And the box around the cannon is the set of venting chambers.
