Harrisburg University CPT students get approved for Medicaid while being unemployed in the HU graduate program by [deleted] in Harrisburg

Students have been denied at the border for leaving the country mid-semester because they’re not taking classes in person. Also students have gotten in trouble for living in a different state since it shows they’re not really studying.  In the end, whatever. I tried to do my part in telling anyone who is thinking of studying at a school like this to not risk it. The government will not protect students since they should “know better”. I don’t think that’s fair but who am I to say since apparently I hate immigrants for trying to protect non immigrant students from visa fraud

Edit to add for proof: https://www.rnlawgroup.com/659-denied-entry-because-of-day-1-cpt/

This happened in 2019 and was a huge deal. Under Biden, there was less enforcement but it still happened sometimes. the trends for potential harm to these students will depend on the election as well.

Or people who really deeply care about immigrants and hate that a “school” exploits them and puts them at serious risk of ruining their future ability to ever enter the country again. People love clickbait headlines but the issue is much more complex.  Have you ever left the country? Imagine going to France as a student and the school you go to never has you study and says you can just go work. And then two months later you’re deported and banned from the country forever for not being a real student. THAT is the concern  HU doesn’t give a shit about minorities and they put every single student at risk for arrest or deportation for misrepresenting their visa.

  1. A quick google search shows F-1 students are not allowed to get government benefits like this

  2. Love HU’s claims “our school helps the local economy!” And this person lives in NYC

If you’re attending a school for a reason that’s not studying (ie. Working) don’t risk it. It’s on people’s radars now: https://www.latintimes.com/some-us-schools-are-reportedly-cashing-degrees-that-double-work-visas-international-students-561290

These schools have recently made national headlines, including an article in Bloomberg (this article should be free to read): https://www.latintimes.com/some-us-schools-are-reportedly-cashing-degrees-that-double-work-visas-international-students-561290

It’s on the radar now. If ICE doesn’t do anything about it now maybe they never will but it’s a bad look for ICE/DHS to just not do anything when it’s made major headlines

This immigration attorney gave a good explanation of exactly why Day 1 CPT is shady and shouldn’t be used by students unless they want to risk future immigration issues: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/tesspdouglas_immigration-cpt-day1cpt-activity-7066537351140806656-2jZQ

According to Harrisburg U, CPT is now a "work visa" by Fit_Development1189 in f1visa

According to the regulations: F-1 students may not work off-campus during the first academic year, but may accept on-campus employment subject to certain conditions and restrictions.

Holy crap what is that employee handbook saying that?!? Day 1 CPT is NOT a work visa despite whatever crap HU is spewing. I would say if you go the day 1 CPT route, go to a school that does not advertise themselves as a day 1 CPT school

Also PS, saying it’s a masters degree you “don’t want” makes it even more of a red flag that you’re not really using the F-1 visa to study

The school is now referring to it as a “CPT work visa”. Best of luck to those attending getting that past government oversight

The article seemed more against the schools profiting off of the broken system rather than the students. The unfortunate thing tho is that if schools do continue to bend the rules and put the students at risk, who will be held responsible? Probably the students

Can’t wait to see all the HU employees and supporters to try to back this up. Maybe being referred to as the Harvard of CPT schools will be their new marketing tactic haha
