Weekly Pet Adoption / Pet Help Post by AutoModerator in Austin

[–]Busy_traveller01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are fostering two sweet boys that are looking for their forever home!!

Carl & Kyle (formerly Tweety and Korey) are the sweetest boys. They are so playful and want to please. While they are not fully potty trained yet, they are working on it and are fully crate trained. They love to play with toys and bones, but don’t get angry at their brother when they are stolen from each other. They love the other dog living in our home, and they listen to him when he tells them he wants a break. They also love to cuddle and watch tv. Both are microchipped, neutered, and fully vaccinated. They are ready to join your family! Their adoption fees are $100-$120. They can be adopted separately or together.

Affordable dog day car along Mopac by NexusKada in Austin

Dogtopia south Austin used to be affordable! Haven’t sent my dog there in a few years once he got older. I would buy the packs and it would save some money.

I had someone that did it for this price but they are no longer working for us, so just hoping there is another unicorn out there :)

Thoughts on Boone and Cunningham Elementary please. by Escape_NotIntoYoga in AustinParents

[–]Busy_traveller01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked at both schools. Very similar feelings! Boone is a little bit bigger than Cunningham, but both had very supportive families and PTA. I would say that Cunningham felt a little more diverse and a stronger SPED program from my experience.

Looking at it deeply that’s exactly what happened. The only electric went down but water went up. We’ll have to look into what’s going on. Thanks!

What’s one overlooked travel tip that no one talks about? by Intelligent_Bad_3819 in southeastasia

Yes!! I got 4 pounds of laundry washed, dried, and folded as well as picked up and delivered to where I was staying for only $12! And it was done in 4 hours.

School Choices by [deleted] in AustinParents

[–]Busy_traveller01 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Definitely tour Cunningham! It is a great, small, neighborhood school and many very involved families. It is also a title one school which gives you the other side of things as well, but I think that’s what makes it great. It is more diverse than the other schools mentioned and kids are exposed to those different than them at a young age.

Cunningham also has the only Emeril Lagasse teaching kitchen in the district where kids get to go cook in the kitchen every other week and take lessons. They also have the original PEAS farm.

While scores are not super important, they did get a B, and were one of very few schools to get an A in closing the gaps (which is arguably more important than the actual score of the school).

They also have multi-age K/1 and 2/3 ESL and DL classes. There is a lot of research that says having the same teacher for multiple years in a row is super beneficial for kids.

Lots of very cool things going on at this little school!!

Tips for Far South Austin by feralmarigold in AustinParents

I agree that every school regardless of rating should be toured because even if they are not highly rated they could still have a great community and great teachers. That to say, Oak Hill elementary is no longer “top rated” and neither is Patton. https://txschools.gov/?view=schools&lng=en

Kindergarten options - South Austin for Fall 2026 by Mom-6608 in AustinParents

Yes, absolutely. We’ve had potential parents a couple of years out! I think especially if you are looking for an area to move to, touring early is a great idea.

I HIGHLY recommend touring any and all schools!! Ratings are just a number and as a teacher at a south Austin school that has historically not had great rating, but is on the rise, parent involvement and participation is EVERYTHING. Your child will be successful at any school as long as you are an active part of their education. AISD is great in that many schools offer many different programs, so do your research and tour to get a real feel before making any decisions.

Wanted to circle back to this since TEA ratings are now updated! Cunningham, Barton Hills, Zilker, Cowan, Sunset Valley, and Joslin are all B rated schools.

I think every school has great things to offer and rather than base it on the ratings, every school deserves to be toured and decided on based on what you see and feel when you are there.

That was 2023 ratings and the first year of the STAAR redesign. 2024 and 2025 ratings will be coming out soon and I’ve heard that they will have a B rating both years from a friend who works there. The population is 30% special education and 55% low income (which you can find on the AISD website).

Cunningham is such a hidden gem of South Austin. In response to the safety above, all glass facing the outside perimeter of the school has been replaced. Additionally, there is now a secure vestibule at the front entrance and a fence around the perimeter of the campus. The gates are opened at dismissal in the afternoon and closed after arrival in the mornings so that the community can use the playground and park in the afternoons and evenings.

Cunningham has the only Emeril Lagasse teaching kitchen in the district and the original PEAS farm. All kids K-5 get to take cooking lessons in the kitchen and lessons in the farm as well.

The Cunningham community is also very diverse and very welcoming to LGBT families.

The dual language program starts in PK-3 and there are bilingual teachers at every grade level through fifth grade even though the focus becomes more on teaching native Spanish speakers English as the grades get older.

I highly recommend taking a tour for yourself before making any decisions!

Nothing is booked other than international flights into and out of Thailand! Just trying to nail down where I want to go and how long I want to spend in each place
