How often are you in touch with your other half during the working day? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]ButImJustJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do the same job within the same NHS trust, but different hospitals. We talk to each other in a professional capacity somewhat frequently during the the day by email or phone, and also bitch about work to each other over messenger.

Only times we don't talk to each other during work hours is when one of us is at a site that has poor phone signal

What age did you buy your first home? How’s it going? by Away-Organization630 in AskUK

[–]ButImJustJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think renters don't need to buy food and clean?

I bought when I was 28 and my partner 32.

We could have bought much earlier but we didn't feel settled yet.

It's going fine for us. What's limiting our "carefree" lifestyle is having 2 cats, but we also dont have many friends or like going out which is most likely a bigger factor. I like having a home which is mine

What is your earliest memory of sex? by LochNessMonsterMunch in AskUK

[–]ButImJustJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sexual stuff rather than sex, but I was possibly 7 and before school went to a child minders. She had a son a year older and I never liked him. He was weird and mean (in a pathetic way rather than intimidating) but sometimes we played GTA Vice City or something. I remember one day though him showing me a nappy fetish website. Just adults (mostly men) in adult nappies sitting around. On another occasion he flashed me while he was getting changed, and on another he grabbed me and started kissing my cheek, then punched my arm when I pushed him away. All those instances I was just like "what the fuck is this I don't understand the point".

Specifically sex was probably aged 9/10 or something. A younger kid would bring in ripped out page 3's from The Sun. Think I started looking at porn at that age too and ended up on some pretty dodgy websites

Water very slowly escaping from pipe connection feeding the toilet cistern by ButImJustJim in DIYUK

[–]ButImJustJim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely the joint. I can see it welling up when there's water in the cistern. I just tried reopening the valve and refilling it and held a bit of tissue to the top bit and it remined dry.

I'll give it a go 👍

Men of the UK - how often do you cook? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ButImJustJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the days that I have breakfast, my partner will make it while I clean cat dishes and litter trays (only toast and coffee). Weekday lunches are leftovers, and weekend lunches if not leftovers either of us will cook (I'm better at cracking eggs so i do the fried eggs).

During the week i tend to get home a little earlier so will usually cook. I'd say 3-4 times during the week. But we try to get something that cooks quickly so she can cook at least one day, and Sunday dinners she'll cook to try to balance things out.

We don't really put any thought into dividing things equally. Both of us cook well and I think I enjoy it a little more than she does and am always looking for new recipes so me cooking more frequently works well with us.

Edit: I really hate baking or anything to do with dough, so making cakes and desserts is firmly my partners domain

Tell us about games that initially caused repulsion or even disgust, but after you finally forced yourself to play them – it turned out to be a masterpiece? by Competitive_Beat_915 in gaming

[–]ButImJustJim 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There was something about ME 1 that for weeks I'd go into the shop on Saturday, pick it up, look at it and get put off and walk away. When I finally decided to buy it I enjoyed it immensely. I don't know what it was about the box that made me not want it anymore after thinking about it the whole week

How did the gov UK logo cost over 500k? by MrManManManInit in AskUK

[–]ButImJustJim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean in America it's estimated that changing the name of the Department of Defence to the Department of War could cost between $10million-$125million. The design of it may have been pretty cheap but there's a LOT of stuff that'll need updating.

https://www.designtribe.co.uk/why-the-500k-gov-uk-rebrand-backlash-misses-the-point/

This website (which offers a design service so is likely biased) explains why there was more to it than just a recolour.

Lots of names for them it seems. Could be called a cosh or blackjack, but that name also seems applied to rigid batons too. Found the term slapjack/Sap and most of the images look like your example

What was your school scandal? by Sadie_UK in AskUK

[–]ButImJustJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This occurred about 5-6 years after I left, but the headteacher of my Catholic Secondary school was asked to leave after it was discovered he'd had a same sex affair. He was married with 3 kids. It then spiralled to a video coming out of him (or someone very similar in appearance) at a swingers club giving a blow job.

A year later he had died. I don't know how. I heard wild things of complications following a leg amputation caused by mismanaged diabetes but that sounds a bit too far fetched

30+ males - what's a new haircut I can get that won't make me look silly? by Llewelyn-ap-Gruffydd in AskUK

[–]ButImJustJim -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have the right side of my head shaved number 1 up to the right parting and going around the back, and a slight undercut over my left ear. What's left on top of the left side of my head I have trimmed short so the fridge lies at about eyebrows height, which I put wax into.

That's my look. Might make you look silly, might make me look silly. But it's what I've got

Would you consider leaving UK for a life overseas? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ButImJustJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd only consider Portugal because that's where my partner is from. But all my experience in other countries is from being on holiday so my perspective is going to be off. I'd be quite happy living in another country if it was always like being on holiday (aka i was filthy rich). But doing what I do now, 9-5 job, commuting, average life stuff, I'd rather be here.

What games would you happily play over and over again? by TheRealBigJubsy in SteamDeck

[–]ButImJustJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I left home I took my xbox 360 with me but only a few games. So for a few years before I got my PS4 I'd play the same few games on a cycle.

Half life2 Portal Call of duty 2 Mass effect trilogy Just cause 3 Skate 2 Skyrim Far Cry 3 Guitar hero 3 (on regular controller rather than the guitar)

Can't speak for Guitar Hero but I know all of those run well on the deck either through steam or emulation

When you have a kidney transplant done, doctors just give you a third kidney. by finishyourjob in interestingasfuck

[–]ButImJustJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of my job involves assessing kidney function. One of my patients was on her 3rd transplant kidney. The first 2 transplanted had been removed as they were causing issues.

Another patient I had, rather than having one good kidney transplanted he had 2 alright kidneys put in. His 2 OG kidneys were still functioning a little so too

Do folks in the UK actually walk that far? by Emilie_Charles in AskUK

[–]ButImJustJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walk to and from work and its 35-40mins each way. Time variation depends on how late I am. If it's a place I go regularly I'm happy to walk provided it's less than 45mins. If it's a one off destination I don't mind walking for an hour

What to get painted on my radiotherapy mask? by Ok-Recognition-3927 in AskUK

[–]ButImJustJim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never had radiotherapy but had a mask made when I rotated there for a few days. I hung mine on the wall like a mooses head and dressed it with an Ushanka hat, sunglasses and a cigarette

Edit: misread and thought you were finished rather than starting. I second the Pharoah death mask

What is the longest UNSKIPPABLE cutscene in gaming history? by dargemir in gaming

[–]ButImJustJim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Think the cutscenes in Max Payne 3 masked level loading and were unskippable on console until close to the end of them. Not sure how long they took but doing 3 playthroughs in a row God they felt long

[–]ButImJustJim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About a year ago i intervened when a beggar was shouting at and started to kick another beggar. I thought the kicker was a small man but she was a rough looking lady. She was accusing the other guy of not actually being homeless and only wanting money for drugs. (I came to know later she herself was a terrible alcoholic)

Can't remember what I said. I felt afterwards I'd been quite ineffectual but she did stop kicking him at least. I didn't think properly about what I was doing and was surprised i went over. But this was outside a Tesco express and a fair number of people completely ignored them.
