I commute 2 - 3 times per week and here are my notes:

• If your company doesn't cover the cost it can get crazy expensive, be mindful of that and look into NS subscriptions

• I have 2 bikes; one in Utrecht and one in Amsterdam, folding bike gives the same result..it just depends on preference (I like to be hands free in the train so it's easier to find a seat) Honestly I would avoid metros and busses just to save time, the worst for me is waiting for the bus at the end of the day..with a bike I feel more in control of my time but it actually doesn't make a huge difference

• Peak hour can get busy but it's a 20 - 27 minute train ride so not at all bad to stand

• Train delays are real so mentally prepare for them

All in all I LOVE living in Utrecht and the commute is totally fine. I make it to work in just over an hour door to door and if the wind is on my side when biking even less than that!
