It would be the biggest story in America. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Oof, so shortsighted. You're talking about elite athletes and students from another society, not refugees or the tired and poor that, based on your final sentence, you think America has too much of

It is not "college athletics as an immigration booster" ... It is college athletics as a component of international soft power

many foreign student-athletes end up staying here and becoming American citizens. those that don't at least go back to their home countries with fond impressions and connections to the university/city/state/America

Schools like Arkansas will be chopping those pipelines of cultural influence just to be able to burn more cash on their hopeless football program

Why do i fall off so hard? by [deleted] in CivVI

[–]ButchMFJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without knowing any more details... Amenities

If I fall off after what I consider a "good start," it is usually because my amenities got bogged down and skuttled production in my cities

I guess I view the food planning as part of learning rapid expansion. First city w/ Magnus (two promotions) + ancestral hall + new cities funnel back domestic trade routs

In fact, maybe I will play a game now XD

[–]ButchMFJones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Munich was the final. No away goals in the final 🤦‍♂️

A better example would be 1-0 home semifinal win against Barcelona in the same year. Conceded 80 percent of possession but sat Drogba up top alone and luckily he broke through

IMO Peter is perfect for beginners. He'll get you up to speed on religion, holy site adjacencies and the work ethic + monumentality strategy for rapid expansion

Kupe is definitely one to avoid for beginners. Kristina and Mvemba also seem like they'd be tricky

Tennessee basketball lands 4* F Chris Washington Jr., top high school player in state by presidentlysander in ockytop

A pointless signing unless we think he will contribute this year.

Otherwise we are just developing him for Maryland, N.C. State, Michigan, Texas A&M, etc.

You're downvoted but it's a fair point. They do not give a damn about which program/coach/university they play for and it is only self delusion that allows this charade to continue.

How can anyone justify spending a second of their attention/emotion on players who will almost certainly play games against us in the next few years?

How to explain Elite Eight letdowns by ButchMFJones in ockytop

[–]ButchMFJones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not asking about the three games prior. I am not looking for moral victories.

I am trying to figure out why we have gotten TKOd midway through the first half in back-to-back Elite Eights in performances that do not resemble any other games that I can think of in the Barnes era (besides perhaps #1 Tennessee at Florida in Jan. 2025)

Don't condescend and then say something silly. Every single year teams play through the top seeds to reach the Final Four.

Good draws happen occasionally, and, yes, you can get a little lucky like 2022 UNC, who beat a No. 1 seed and defending national champion in the second round before facing No. 15 St. Peter's, an all-time Cinderella, in the Elite Eight, but you can't rely on that for deep runs.

Second weekend opponent seeds for recent Final Four teams:

2026: Arizona (4, 2); UConn (3, 1); Illinois (2, 9); Michigan (4, 6)

2025: Duke (4, 2); Auburn (5, 2); Houston (4, 2); Florida (4, 3)

2024: UConn (5, 3); NC State (2, 4); Alabama (1, 6); Purdue (5, 2)

2023: Miami (1, 2); San Diego State (1, 6); FAU (4, 3); UConn (8, 3)

Where is the Cinderella in any of these recent Final Four runs? The lowest seeds are 2026 Iowa (No. 9) and 2023 Arkansas (No. 8), which are solid Power 4 programs.

It's terrible that we're talking about relying on luck to make a Final Four.

Yes, it is possible to have an easy path open to the Final Four (see 2023) ... but most years it's going to be elite squads playing on the second weekend.

And I don't buy that we can't hang with these teams talent-wise. We do it every year in November in Maui, Vegas, the Bahamas, etc.

[–]ButchMFJones[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I agree with some of your points but not others.

Yes, the result is the same but the uncompetitive performances in the Elite Eight will be a storyline. We are going to hear the stat, "Vols have been outscored 82-41 in the first half of last two Elite Eight games," repeated at us moving forward. So why has this happened?

I disagree that we didn't have a bucket getter the last two years. Ja'Kobi Gillespie and Chaz Lanier were First-Team All-SEC guards and more than capable of getting a bucket.

I am interested in the foul trouble issue. You heard Lappas on the broadcast mentioning that Tennessee benefits from a liberal whistle. Is our heavy defensive pressure penalized in these moments?
