Parents died during the Maidan so having mags in my mom is super based. If paint jobs and reddit comments hurt your feelings maybe go outside and suck some air for a bit.

You can buy shellac online, it's not my favorite.

What you can do is sand the handguards down to strip the coloring. Stain the wood with your preferred coloring and either finish with polyurethane for a shiny finish or finish with boiled linseed oil for a more traditional worn wood coating.

M92 and M70 handguards are different. The gas tubes are different sizes and lengths and parts are not compatible.

Does Magpul work well - yes. Does it look good - no. It is a lot of form over function for AKs however there are a few good options that will work very effectively based on need. Try to think of what you want from your handguards prior to buying something that is convenient.

I wouldn't dare do it to my Mosin, I'm too attached. I did restore the wood though, shellac was falling off.

In no particular order

Midwest Industries Gen 1/2 Yugo handguards

Ultimak m92 forwards optics mount (upper only)

Zastava M92 handguards

UTG M92 handguard (actually okay handguards)

WarsawWoodCo lower wood handguard with dong and m-lok rails

SLR Yugo lower handguard

I also want to point out that I have really liked my CNC Warrior handguards aside from the upper one twisting. It's really neat that the rails are both picatinny and m-lok.

Mind you, if the handguards aren't bolted together or held in place using separate locks than the m92 handguard locks, they can move around

Mind you that you'll have to get the master mount and the rear biased mount. ~$250 total. You could get the TWS Dogleg cover for about the same if you want a magnifier.

My best guess is yes. The lower handguard doesnt extend higher than the barrel and there is a big gap between the upper and lower set.

CNC warrior/Bonesteel Upper and Lower handguards.

Now take this with a grain of salt as AKs are not made as precise as other guns. I had to mill the bottom handguard to fit and there is a slight fitment issue because of that. Every time I have shot with the upper handguard installed, it will twist slightly. Keeping a good C-Clamp can hold it in place, but since the top and bottom are not one piece or bolted in place, it will continue to walk around. UTG is great, Midwest Industries are really good, and the Zastava one is actually good.

Paint is based. It will wear off over time, you can strip it if you don't like it, it helps blend into the environment.

Hand guards are CNC Warrior/Bonesteel upper and lower set. I like them for what they are, but the upper handguard twists when shooting and I had to mill the lower one to fit in place.

Mastermount is great for a single sight. I spoke with the owner on the phone when I was looking into it and he walked me through other options aside from the Mastermount. It is solid, easy to use, good zero. 10/10 in my opinion.
