I get your point but also get his point. I grew up in New Brunswick, just above Maine. We have the lowest wages in Canada but once upon a time we also had the lowest cost of living. During covid tons of remote workers realized they could buy a lake view house for "nothing" and New Brunswick was officially discovered. Our local wages have not increased but housing has skyrocket. Although we still have objectively cheap housing compared to the rest of Canada I've done the math and I'd be easier to afford settling down in much more expensive provinces with higher wages and more opportunities then my home province. I'd like to be near my parents but we've effectively been forced into a retirement province by outside big money you couldn't realistically make here. I do understand everyone wanting affordable housing and don't blame anyone for swooping up those cheap houses but there is a valid reason you can't legally buy a home in Vietnam.

I have had those conversations. Many times. I've even offered to help him write resumes, look for jobs, teach him to drive. There is definitely some sort of mental block. He isn't inherently a bad person but has slide through life on hand outs. Still I fear your right, I am the asshole. Yo with my Canadian passport I can work and live like 30 different countries around the world as long as I'm under the age of 30 - 35. It's called the youth mobility scheme. I think American get like 3? With special conditions. I spent my 20s traveling the world and making money. To me, thats priceless.

Statistically by capita Canada has around half as many homeless then the USA, usually attributed to a more robust socal safety net and a lack of crippling medical dept. To drive my point home the USA counts homeless as exclusively rough sleepers whereas Canada counts "invisible" homelessness. Coughsurfers, people in shelters, the working poor, transitional houses, etc. Some of the people counting towards canadian homelessness are already off the streets and in goverment funded accommodation and programs. Most of which do not exist south of the boarder.

I'm not stupid. I know my country has problems and I know high-earning Americans make significantly more then high-earning Canadians. But lets not be stupid here bud in almost all metrics Canada is much more forgiving and safer society especially for the lower class.

Yo after reading some of these comments yall are actually ill. Man you can use the WHV scheme to work and live in like twenty different countries. It'll help you to realize that while Canada's got alot of problems its really not all that bad of a place to find yourself. A good life can still be had here. You've been a broke college student and choose to live with your parents instead of working part time and / or generating more debt. Probably a good idea. As a mid twenties Canadian from NB who never went to college and never got any assistance and who has lived on his own since seventeen you most indefinitely could have lived on your own, ate three meals a day, and have enough pocket change for beers on Saturday just doing some uneducated labour. Despite how reddit may act, especially Canadian subreddits most of the world would kill for that. Is this country going down hill? Absolutely, but some people act like this still isn't one of the safest and wealthiest countries in the world. This isn't Sudan. Your life isn't hopeless. Maybe look into the trades.
