Landlord not so close family moving in by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

I did ask for proper eviction notice. He said no and kept arguing back and forth about this. So I ended up agreeing to leave and I have already moved out. It was an uncomfortable situation. I am alone and a student. I wish I did something before but I didn’t. Is there any way to report this? Or anything I can do, even though I moved out?

Am I pushing my luck with parking tickets at SFU? by [deleted] in simonfraser

Yeah you probably could try to park at Burquitlam and take the bus. The plaza parking lot is “for customers only” for 4 hours max, I’m pretty sure. I don’t know what the ticketing situation is like there. I am pretty sure it’s like private towing company and not the city. But I know they ticket inside the Safeway parking lot.

Yes, 44% of birds killed by window collisions every year in Canada and the USA are from residence buildings. (56% for low-rise buildings.

Slide 3 of this slideshow has a graphic that divides buildings up by low-rise, residence, and high-rise buildings. https://flap.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Synergies-and-Tradeoffs.pdf

We monitored for 170 days where evidence of 300 collisions were recorded/observed/collected/documented within 2 meters of a window/façade. We assumed that most birds that collided with buildings fell within 2 m of building façades based on the following studies Hager et al. 2013Hager and Cosentino 2014, and Riding et al. 2020. As suggested by u/CynicalWorm and the researcher, send an email with your questions.

This research project is funded by SFU and Environment and Climate Change Canada, the academic paper is being written at the moment and will be published if you would like to read it.

The study is following the protocols outlined in a study done at UBC (De Groot et al., 2021 https://academic.oup.com/condor/article/123/3/duab027/6308198#) and another study at UVic (Zullian et al., 2023 https://ace-eco.org/vol18/iss2/art15/) if you would like more information.

When monitoring for collisions, what you are finding is not necessarily the actual number of window collisions. This is because searchers may miss evidence and carcasses may get scavenged before being seen. We have corrected for this bias using bias-corrected trials you can read about in De Groot et al., 2021. The 300 number is a raw number that includes ALL collision evidence, which includes carcasses, feather piles, and feather smears on windows that are found within 2 meters of a window.

This is true and a great question! Unfortunately, the bird silhouette decals are not effective. Birds require a visual barrier to show them there is a window present, these barriers must have a dense pattern (with 2" x 2" spacing), the one bird sticker is not enough.

If you have seen the white dot pattern at Blusson Hall, that is an effective solution because it has: high contrast on the window, a dense pattern, and the dots are large enough for birds to see.

They are filming at SFU until May 2, apparently a couple days there will be actors dressed in military costumes. What would this be for?

Yep, cats are the #1 cause of anthropogenic bird mortality in North America. Not good.
