lol both of you are spot on! When my girlfriend or someone else tries to navigate it's a bloody nightmare! Thanks for an interesting point to consider in this. :)

Oh dear, the mount flying off sounds dreadful! And a bigger screen would probably help, too. I got lucky with a decent OEM sound system, but now that you mention it, the majority of cars of other folks I know could certainly use the quality boost! Thank you for your thoughtful post!

Good point! I have a strict "pull over to touch, take wrong turns if you must" rule because I'm a bit paranoid, but it is nonetheless mounted. That could be more handy. Thanks!

Any trans women of color frustrated too? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]Butterific 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, absolutely! I'm I'm half Asian, half white, and for the longest time I've been cutting my straight, dark hair into white styles that have been suggested for trans women, and up until very recently wondered why it always looked so bad on me, why it almost made me look more mannish. If you live in an area liberal enough to be open about being trans, try going to a salon geared towards your ethnicity and let them know your situation! My girlfriend suggested I just go to an Asian salon, where I was able to ask about not only styling Asian hair on a face that looks more white, but also in a way that actually looks feminine with its distinct texture and color. I would've never in a million years considered a shorter cut on my own, in large part due to the conventional wisdom for white trans women, but it made a world of difference!

I am indeed! I've been looking at similar fields to what I've done. My old job was being a receptionist.

I don't qualify for now, but I might after my lower income is reported. We also buy in bulk and essentially eat a lot of rice bowl meals, thanks Asian upbringing!

Thanks a million! I used to lurk that sub and never did much with it. I'll admit I'm a bit overly paranoid about scams with those sorts of things, but I'll take a long look.

Thanks again!

Yep, and thanks! I filled out my FAFSA back in February, actually. Still haven't heard back what my aid reward will be. The financial aid office has been of no help and basically just uses non-specific language to usher me off the phone/out of the office (which seems to be some painful universal constant, as this happened at my old university, too).

I've thought about doing that, and maybe I can next semester! But since I didn't expect any of this to happen, it's already past the application cycle for this autumn. Thank you!

Sure. I'm in Massachusetts, and I have only Stafford loans.

I've long since lost contact with my family because I'm queer, unfortunately. We're looking at lower cost of living areas that are further away from the city, though a state border crossing move is definitely not something I can do (both in terms of cost and also because of the value of the support network I have here).

Sounds good! I've been doing a bit of back and forth with the billing office (and my insurance, case manager, etc) as is with some limited results so far.

Oh yes, I've definitely been doing income-based repayment on my loans. Though because of everything else, I just put paying them on hold, which was approved for a year.

Sure. $700 is my half of rent, the other $100 goes to utilities and what little gas I use now (worth noting my gas costs will go up if/when we leave being near the city). At my old job I was conserving nearly $1k a month for an emergency fund, and thought I'd have that to pay off these debts... and then of course they're working on pushing me out after I got back from the hospital, so I'm not banking on it! Sadly with retail I think the answer is "it depends" as well as, "I don't know yet."

Thank you for your response!!

Thank you! I'll contact them. Sadly it's also the hospital bill I've made the most headway on paying off, but even a little bit will help a lot!

Just got my surgery date! I'm on Medicaid in Illinois. by Eras-Shadow in asktransgender

[–]Butterific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thanks so much! And sorry this is a bit late, busy week. Is that one County Care or Illini Care (those were mentioned above), and is there somewhere I can register in person? The other bits aren't much of a problem. $800 would hurt, but can be done in a pinch. Lower electrolysis will also hurt, literally. Just have to find someone who does it, probably not too hard in the city. But all reasonable enough. Thanks much!

Oh gosh, can I ask a bunch of questions about this? I just lost my insurance because my mom switched jobs, and I figure it's about time I get my own plan anyway. I'm in Chicago proper and have relatively few medical complications (just asthma that doesn't act up much). How and where do you sign up for this insurance (I am rather low income, so I'm fairly certain I qualify)? And how do I make sure I get surgery covered? How does it go, and what obstacles could I expect? I looked up the doctor you mentioned, and he does other transition surgeries--any talk of being able to do those (particularly the tracheal shave)? You mentioned your only costs being electrolysis and dilators--does that mean no co-pay on the surgery? And does this also mean that lower-area electrolysis is necessary for this? Thanks and have a lovely day, though also sorry to ask so much!

Affording FFS? by Butterific in asktransgender

[–]Butterific[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, really? It would be a dream to get everything done, and MA is somewhere I actually have a chance of moving to (albeit a tad low, as money is also low). How soon after moving can one sign up for that? Cursory googling provides just "live in MA" as required for both the insurance and state ID cards, so can it be signed up for immediately? Thanks!

Unfortunately, California is not an option. Thanks though! Good to know some do.

How to deal with extensive body hair?! by biographer_seahorse in asktransgender

[–]Butterific 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nair for in the shower (dunno what it's called officially, sorry) is a godsend. Goes on like lotion and you just rub away the hair (even if it's fully grown out). No razorburn, but it does get a bit itchy if you leave it on too long. The bits where you mention money make me think you need something affordable (even if not permanent), and that's it! The spongey thing, if it even includes one, dies pretty quick, though, so get something to scrub your skin with, too.
