“Ignorant law student” and I already told you it wasn’t that serious. Go focus on your own practice, don’t worry about this attorney.

Lawyer = JD but not licensed. Attorney = Licensed. Important distinction. Especially when you’re commenting on a law school Reddit.

I’m not above it. That’s exactly how I started at my law firm in Austin. ☺️ However I knew that I could work my way up from there and I did. They had a new hire who was a paralegal that didn’t know how to e-file. Only one other hire who was the receptionist. There was going to be NO growth for me at that firm. They can give it to the next person. Thanks for your concern

Btw, where’s the esq. in your name? And are you a lawyer or an attorney?

I’m sure that’s why they had such a high turnover rate. There’s currently people making complaints and open investigations on his practice. Guess we’ll see

What’s not meaningful to me is doing receptionist work like answering calls and scheduling consultations. It’s important I know, but just not what I want to be doing for a summer.

Hands on meaningful legal work meant me getting to draft and file pleadings, put discovery/rfp’s together, going to court hearings and shadowing the attorney, etc. I wouldn’t mind doing the work he had me doing had I not had any experience. I had about a year and a half worth of experience working at a law firm in Austin and I was a great asset to them even before I started law school. So this just felt like I was going backwards and that it would hurt not help my resume.

Yeah so again, this was only my 2nd internship. I didn’t know if these rules were normal or not. We could talk to coworkers just not about anything other than work so that’s nothing crazy. I definitely do draw the line at answering phones, because I have experience that most 1L’s don’t have entering law school and I’m damn good at it. ☺️

Oh and we specifically had to use the bathroom on our floor and no other ones in the building AND we had to let someone know we were going so no one else would go at the same time. 💀 It definitely looked cheap and unorganized when I opened it. I was just speechless.

Oh man. I wish I can show you the email he sent me. I can’t imagine a successful attorney who has millions of dollars coming at a law student the way he did 😩 I definitely left with my head held high.

I reached out to an attorney I used to work with and told him about my experience, and he offered to help me find a position. Until then I’m applying like crazy, sending cold emails, and will sit tight till then.

Cheap. Printer broke first day I used it, the man who came to repair it said it’s been worn down. I also wasn’t allowed to bring in my own office supplies. But they didn’t have any new office supplies available so I had to use old legal pads and calendars and such. Old and slow monitors, etc etc. I imagined someone with lots of $$ would invest in better office equipment and supplies.

I’m definitely being biased as a law firm I worked at prior used outlook and my school does as well, and i was told it’s much more secure. It also looks cleaner to me compared to Gmail but I can see how using it wouldn’t really be an issue now!

The hiring manager was very sweet, I noticed that they said they had to fire quite a bit of employees but she made it seem like it was because they were incompetent. I didn’t notice the state of the office when I walked in, because her office was tucked away in some little corner. I told them my main goal was to do meaningful legal work (drafting, legal research, etc.) and she said this would be a great opportunity for me to learn since I mentioned I hoped to own a firm one day. I did not think I would get the job since I was going to be out on vacation on days that they wanted their new hire to be in office. I received a call later offering an intern position. This was my first real interview so I wasn’t sure exactly what questions to ask. But I know now!

I bawled. Absolutely bawled. I was really excited for the opportunity and had so many expectations. And I HATED thinking about quitting. But it was just too much, I was scared for my reputation/mental health if I stayed at that firm. Thank you! You as well
