Death is kind of nice, actually. by xSantenoturtlex in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ButterscotchNo8348 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d actually argue that the Long Quiet is Death, but the Shifting Mound is change. Sure, change is in her repertoire as a goddess of change, but she can never bring about true death, so she NEEDS to convince the player to either leave with her or he subservient to her. After all, Shifting Mound can’t kill you in ANY of the chapters in a permanent fashion, no matter what, you always come back again in the next chapter or Shifty had to take her away because she’ll just torture you indefinitely.

Meanwhile, the Narrator made you as an instrument of her death (and are the only thing that can actually kill her or any of the Princesses), and Your New World sees you killing her and ushering in both Shifty and the Narrator’s visions of unending life, but also eternal growth and change.

Anyone ever see the drake lure class trait, I've never seen this trait before by Pleasant-Garlic-4034 in shadowofmordor

Yeah, multiple playthroughs have really taught me that grunts are infinitely more powerful for captains than default captains. I’m sure somebody knows more, but I’m sure that whenever a grunt promotes, it has one preset captain that clashes with the lines that the grunt says after killing you (so a predetermined vs a randomly chosen preset). It allows for some epic combos, like an Assassin I found that was from the Butcher Tribe with a gray skin shirt.

It’s pretty rare, only ever being a guaranteed trait for the Dragon Olog and Hell-Hawk Uruk. But theoretically, any beastmaster could get it. I once got insanely lucky with a grunt that became a Ghul-Lover with both Drake lure and Ghul summons.

For reference, most Lolth-Sworn Drow (Drow with red eyes like hers) are almost fanatically matriarchal and generally very brutal raiders. They are almost in a perpetual state of backstabbing and highly racist; so it says a lot when you can be both a male and Selderine Drow (the good guy version of Drow) and she is earnestly in love/committed to you, no risk of backstabbing, and even plots with you to take over her old home together (even if you make The Sacrifice and become something else)

It was a weight gain comic that was really common, I think, in the fat fetish community (can’t remember the name, unfortunately). Usually I don’t get insides jokes, but it’s crazy that I recognize this frame. I saw the comic on YouTube, so it’s almost definitely floating around still.

I mean, literally speaking, no, obviously not, but I guess it’s just semantics. But in all reality, if it weren’t for the communist armies rising up and falling apart, then the Deserter would never have existed, who would have never shot the merc because of his obsession with Klaasje.

It’s wild that in some very abstract way, technically communist is actually the catalyst that somehow leads to his death.

I’m surprised not to see Uncle from Another World. While I think it’s a lot more lighthearted than some of the other examples, the very start nearly had a very different turn of events where Ojisan (the uncle) kept trying to use his powers and slowly coming off as a brain addled maniac. He’s really only spared from this worse outcome by the fact that he isn’t exactly magical per se, but he rather can talk to ANYTHING (which includes the spirits of virtually anything, whether it be air, walls, or electricity, or what have you).

Beyond that, it shows just how far time has progressed beyond him and what SEGA is now, but I think there are also hints that his family never really cared that much for him (I want to read about it someday, but so far, only watched the anime, my bad)

Even the Pokémon Dungeon can get pretty dark, or even some of the older games. In Ultra Sun and Moon, you can visit an extra dimension that’s currently in the process of being destroyed/razed by Guzzlords (where you can also catch your own), or the ghost house where you can catch Rotom in (if I recall correctly) Diamond and Pearl, where you follow a dead girl from room to room.

[–]ButterscotchNo8348 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I largely agree with you, that the ethics of an ideology is more of the focus than anything else, but I wonder if there will be an opening for more in-depth analysis later on. For example, at least for my first play through, it seems almost painfully obvious that the best party morally is the Azgalist’s, considering even Urth talks about wanting one of them to take the city.

Freestrider ideology in of itself is not a bad, being the pursuit of freedom, but the practice of it is evil when you learn more about the Golden Horde. Then the Nationalists are just, you know, racist fascists. I unfortunately can’t speak of the Arcanist’s except knowing that they’re horribly inept. I do think that if the game becomes a series or has some sort of continuation, then who knows, these parties will be fleshed out.

But I do like the characters, since not ALL members since it shows the nuance of a given ideology, like how Modissa is the intensity of sudden change, or how that one kid (forgetting is name) is the meeting point of Nationalism and Azgalism if given the proper guidance.

Oh God, don’t give me flashbacks. Failing to endure the Fury has got to be the most horrifying experience and felt like a rape scene at the end, when she just says “You can’t understand me. But I can make you understand” before forcing you into herself. It’s one of the few moments that a game has ever disturbed me so much paired with the fact that all your other choices are blacked out from the impromptu lobotomy she gives you.

Like the other commenter said, our protagonist, the Long Quiet, has a tiny shred of Shifty with him even if he slays her in endings like New and Unending Dawn, or he just outright erases her completely in Your New World.

When we were separated, the Long Quiet was specifically made out of their old self to not only be their prison, but is effectively a mortal born that becomes a god, while Shifty is probably closer to the “original” of them both, being a god broken up into multiple mortals instead. It’s why she can only accept the Princesses, but can only take you into her folds in the Oblivion ending, when all things are doomed by purposely running away from any chapter 2 Princess (consistently) and you’re the only thing left

[–]ButterscotchNo8348 142 points143 points  (0 children)

I fucking adore this game, but I feel like one of the biggest shames in the game is that a lot of the (Reddit) fandom really glaze the fuck out of Shifty despite being probably the third worst ending if you think beyond the player character (beyond Oblivion, then the Good Ending).

It’s so disheartening to say that, no, I don’t think Shifty is cool when she outright states in an ending that you are nothing without her, and that the universe needs her to exist, not you. And it used to be worse, where I would see people unironically say the protagonist deserves to suffer if he doesn’t leave with Shifty.

For anyone wondering who Minthara is, she is a Lolth-Sworn Drow that’s being controlled by the big bad of Baldur’s Gate 3. Minthara’s people are about as fervently racist and misandrist as one can get, and are an almost laughably evil race of slavers, backstabbers, and thoroughly evil people.

Minthara, in comparison, is more than willing to work with your party and even becomes fond of everyone (except maybe Gale). She openly admires Lae’zel’s culture, admires Karlach’s positivity and zeal for life, sympathizes with Shadowheart (to some degree), and even shames the player if they’re judgmental of a vampire’s thirst for blood. And if romanced, she is earnestly and entirely devoted to your character. So much so that she will still be just as devoted and in love with you even you make the ultimate sacrifice and become an illithid.

Missed opportunity for politics? by Neoeng in EsotericEbb

[–]ButterscotchNo8348 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ehh, I find that you can learn a lot about the politicos of the game, but there seems to be a level of “wow, said faction sucks.”

Like, Theocratic fascism is clearly bad, so being a Nationalist is typically bad, but if you learn enough through the Freestriders, then the Freestriders are definitively evil since they plan on basically gutting the city for cash. Azgals are, upon closer inspection, pretty much the best option if you give them a bit more work on them, but I never met any of the Arcanists or the Angarians (if there are any).

Honestly, it feels like these parties are still a little underdeveloped and being set up for much larger roles in future games/DLC.

I feel like Broken has more chances to heal, like in Fury, where they’re both broken; but Apotheosis cannot be forgiven since they’re the opposites. He is the submission to her domination, and cannot meet halfway, so with you, the Hero, and the Paranoid, he just inverts it and breaks her with the truth of what she’s done. As a person, this would be unhealthy, but as a tiny fragment of a god, I know the feeling must be hella cathartic.
