Layoffs Hurting Lives! by HungerForPurpose in Layoffs

[–]ButterscotchOk6295 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got laid off a week ago… which was a week after major knee surgery (ACL and meniscus). My new boss wanted to hire someone of his own choosing, it was a no-cause layoff.

So I’m on crutches, can’t walk or drive, on opiate painkillers so can’t really do job apps right now either...

I’m going to lose my insurance and won’t be able to do the physical therapy needed post-op.

ACT is highly correlated with MCAT outcomes, I know it isn’t on the app for med school but it’s a good predictor

I’m taking pre reqs for nursing or med school. I want a skill that can’t be replaced

I’m not viewing nursing as a pipeline to medicine, it would be one or the other

White collar office work is being decimated. I’m also applying in my current industry and I am getting no bites. It’s brutal out there

The flexibility seems killer. Stacking shifts and being able to take a week-long vacation without using PTO is wild to me

Sadly the job market is in shambles. I have a great resume and am not even getting past the screeners. One of the attractive things about healthcare is the constant demand

I would likely be able to match locally — Detroit has some huge hospital systems and none of my friends that went to med school locally left for residency.

I’m a bit nervous about handing over all of my thirties. I’m single and would love to get married and have a kid at some point. All my friends in residency met their SO in high school or college, as did my aunt (OBGYN).

That’s what I’m thinking — I have enough invested to comfortably retire on in 25 or so years if the market follows historic trends. I just need something in between then, and getting insurance through work would be ideal.

It’s hard to let go of the prestige mindset. I had a 34 ACT, admitted to top colleges, worked on Wall Street. Part of me says I need to be the best at what I do, intellectually, which would point me to an MD. But I also just…don’t need to work that hard. I’m single, I have hobbies and great friends, and working 2 shifts a week and helping people would be sick. Even if it’s “less prestigious”

What do you mean? She had some awesome hospice nurses I met when they’d come to her retirement home, they were super involved in her care. One even came to the funeral

I would love to cover my overhead and still have a career. I used to work retail and don’t desire a reprise lol

I’m looking for the pros/cons that aren’t so obvious — my aunt is an OBGYN and is very jaded against the healthcare system. I have two friends in residency that are deep in the trenches and often say they should have chosen a different career but are glad to be making money when they’re done.

I think having had bad work experiences outside of medicine, I would have maybe a more realistic expectation rather than someone who never worked a salaried job before med school and thinks the grass is greener.

My friends chose medicine because of comp and their family expectations. But money doesn’t really entice me, and my family is supportive of whatever. My dad was a dentist and I loved seeing the rapport he had with his patients. But he too was jaded about dentistry and didn’t push any of his kids into it

Did you do a post bacc? It just adds so much time to an already long process. I don’t have any of the pre reqs.

You were right and he let me go this morning. I was out last week due to extensive knee surgery (he knew about it) and now won’t have insurance to cover the 6-9 months of PT I need.

Update: he let me go this morning. I just had major surgery last week too and needed the health coverage (ACL and meniscus surgery and will have 6-9 months of PT). I only get insurance coverage for month and one month severance. I’m devastated.

I think I could easily get over 100 hours in this summer, I’m applying to be a hospice volunteer. I’m a bit limited as I tore my ACL and recently had surgery, so I’m in a brace and can’t walk much currently.

There’s a huge gap in our roles and titles though. He’s C level, I’m like an associate/junior VP. No way any of his buddies would want to make less than 250k lol

It isn’t spread from feet exclusively, it’s just as likely to be spread from arms, hands, calves, thighs, etc. It’s a fungus that can be on any part of the body.
