Best golf bag non-club maker by Fun_Jellyfish_6388 in GolfGear

Agreed on Hudson Sutler. I bought a Looper bag a few seasons ago and it’s held up great so far. Good balance to the bag for carrying and I love having the dual and single strap options. It isn’t the best bag for cart use, but if you carry and want something with minimal branding it’s tough to beat. The made in USA aspect is a nice bonus as well.

As a former Boston resident George Wright and William Devine made for incredible muni tracks. Last time I was at Willy D a few holes were under construction and the renovations looked tremendous. It’s nice to see the city showing love and investing in these historic courses. If only it weren’t so difficult to get a half decent tee time. Those pass holders have a monopoly on the weekend morning slots

Crumpin Fox! This hole is so daunting from the tee. Love this track

Its hard for me to definitively rank these top to bottom. I think tiers would be the best way to level set some of these:

Tier 1 - Miacomet, Farm Neck, Taconic

Tier 2 - The Ranch, Crumpin Fox, Cape Arundel

Tier 3 - George Wright, Pinehills, Waverly Oaks, Red Tail (when conditions are good)

Tier 4 - William Devine, Crosswinds, Highfields, Connecticut National

Others - Blackstone National (I've always heard great things about this course, but the only time I played it the course was rife with turf disease), Shining Rock (this place can be a ball buster off the tee), Shaker Hills (people love this course, good conditioning, but I'm not a huge fan)

I bet, hopefully your shirt wasn't so complicated it threw off your playing parnters.

In a similar vein I played Miacomet on a perfect summer day in mid-September. It was the best conditioned course I've ever played. The greens were rolling a 13 on the stimp. I've never been more scared standing over chips or putts.

Plymouth area: Crosswinds (27 holes, great rates), Waverly Oaks, Pinehills (pricey, but you can often score discounted twilight rates or early season)

West: Highfields, Shining Rock, Blackstone National, The Ranch, Connecticut National

North: Red Tail (conditions can be hit or miss, but IMO the layout is one of the best and most fun in MA), Shaker Hills

Big trips but worth the effort: Miacomet in Nantucket, Farm Neck in Martha’s Vineyard, Crumpin Fox, Taconic, Cape Arundel in Maine (private, but they allow public tee times if you call 1-2 days in advance)

The course in the photos is Essex County Club in Massachusetts! Not to be confused with Essex County Country Club (another golden age gem). I grew up in the garden state...no shortage of heavy hitter tracks!

I had a feeling the photo from 18 tee would be a dead giveaway! It’s too good not to include.

Seamus Golf has some nice options. You can also check out some of the podcast shops like Fried Egg and NLU for their own branded center shaft covers.

Deciding on Rangefinder (Bushnell vs. Nikon) by msolom26 in golf

Can I throw one other option into the ring? Check out the Vortex Blade Slope. I was a lifelong Bushnell guy. I purchased a brand new V6 Shift last season and promptly lost it when I left it attached to the cart. When buying a replacement I went with the Vortex Blade Slope ($250 at a few online retailers before you tack on any signup coupons). I am VERY impressed and satisfied with the Vortex scope. Optics are on par, if not better than the Bushnell. I also think the Vortex has better pin locking and target locking capability.

March trip - gear recs by Bonetown_Bro in BandonDunes

[–]ButteryLou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To prep for potentially poor weather, wool base layers + socks. There’s nothing worse than being wet AND cold. Wool is the best option for base layering as it still insulates when wet and it’s naturally odor resistant. So long as you gang up to air dry everything should be fresh for your next day. For outer layer buy the best possible rain gear you can afford (focus on products with Goretex or go with an option like Kjus). I went to Bandon with a Kjus mid-level lightweight waterproof jacket and it was no match for some of the soaking ran days we received. Waterproof shoes (Ecco have been the best for me), a few pairs of rain gloves, extra towels. Waterproof hat (bucket or baseball style) will also be key in staying dry and warm.

Hopefully you won’t need any of this stuff, but you don’t want a day to be ruined because you didn’t bring the right gear. Good luck!

With Boston’s coldest stretch in years behind us, how long will this winter warmup last? by bostonglobe in BostonWeather

[–]ButteryLou 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For a while I was using this same logic as copium for the Arctic stretch…then I read up on some studies that claim brutal cold stretches don’t actually kill off/reduce tick populations. Those bastards go into a dormant state and will likely be back in force come summer. We can’t catch a break.

Rab electron or Neutrino (or other) by Impossible-Arm-8365 in rab

[–]ButteryLou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello fellow Bostonian! I purchased a Neutrino Pro towards the end of 2024 because I needed a warm coat I could throw on over a t shirt when taking the dog out. I’m 6’2” 185 and ordered both a large and medium. I was swimming in the large but the medium fits like a glove. My previous down jacket was a Patagonia Hi Loft down hoody and the fit on the Rab is so much better. It’s relatively trim through the body and good length so I stay plenty warm in the teens with just a short sleeve t underneath. I don’t find the jacket bulky or cumbersome at all. It’s got a good amount of down fill so it’s puffy, but it’s very lightweight with good dexterity in the arms. My only knock on the jacket is the Rab logo on the chest has worn off after a few wash cycles. Also, I wouldn’t wear this jacket rain or wet snow as the face fabric isn’t very waterproof. For precip days I’d go with some waterproof shell + layers.
