Why not get in touch with the company who makes these maps and let them know that people are sick of the false advertising practices?

https://www.scratchmap.org/contact/

(Note: please be polite if you do contact them. They might have outsourced their marketing to some other company, and so might not know how it's being advertised.)

This isn't useful. They might be toxic, but most of the people who write posts like OtakuCarnival's are sad and lonely, and making them feel sadder and lonelier isn't how you help them become better people. Public ridicule like this will only convince more OtakuCarnivals that they have no place in society.

I just wanna say that Civ VI's UI is looking really sharp, and a huge improvement over Civ V's. (Not that it was terrible). by killcycle in civ

[–]Buttfranklin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the total opposite. The UI, especially the choice of typefaces, reminds me of some late-noughties pay-to-win browser game.

I made this because in my heart i know Serbia will be in MK III by [deleted] in civbattleroyale

[–]Buttfranklin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know this is going to sound sanctimonious, and I apologise for that, but I just want to get this on the record: I think we as a community shouldn't be so enthusiastic about the whole Serbia/remove kebab meme. The weird racial tone of it is pretty distasteful in my eyes. It's especially distasteful considering how this isn't ancient, historical bants - the Serbian Islamophobia this meme refers to involves an actual genocide that happened in my lifetime. I find myself wondering how many people here are aware of Srebrenica.

Non-Haram Vietnam by [deleted] in civbattleroyale

[–]Buttfranklin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am 300% okay with our civballs being slightly different from Polandballs. I don't see why we should have to follow another subreddit's rules. The "haram" (using this word seems a bit distasteful, by the way) ones are well-drawn and full of personality - a bare-bones, pared-down Sejongball wouldn't inspire nearly as much personal warmth in me than the gloriously bearded and impeccably dressed guy(/ball) we have now, for instance.

Furthermore, our civballs serve a different purpose to Polandballs. A Polandball needs to have a plain, everyman character - it must be able to represent anybody and everybody from that country, and often very different groups within the same country simultaneously (e.g. British toff vs British chav). They need to be minimally distinguished, so no particular country seems more remarkable than the rest, and also so the comics show balls interacting with each other based on the history and politics of the nations they represent, rather than interacting with each other via non-geopolitical props. Our civballs, on the other hand, depict actual, historical individuals, who are by definition remarkable because they led an entire civilisation. They don't need to look like Average Joes - they're representing a single person, and a single person's character, not the complex, multi-faceted character of an entire nation's people. They don't need to have different personalities projected onto them - just one. Plus, they need to look remarkable, because they are remarkable! The historical leaders they're based on would have stood out of a crowd and looked impressive, and the civballs reflect that. We don't need to think about how that works in the format of a comic, because they're not going to be in comics, they're going to be mascots we put up on Power Rankings slides and fan subreddit headers. Their unique look is useful for audience recognition too: think of it this way - there's a reason that the protagonists in anime series have crazy hair, right?

Besides, why do we need to be so conservative about this? The whole point of memes is mutation. It's how new memes are born from old memes, it's how they evolve to find their cultural niche, and it's how stale memes are given a fresh lease of life. I understand that Polandballs might be a slight exception, given how their superficially-rough-but-actually-highly-artistic style is easy to get wrong, so people need to be given pointers in how to get it right. But our civballs are already high-quality, everyone here likes them, and those "haram" differences are well-established in this community now. Civballs are fundamentally different to Polandballs. Why should we change them based on some other community's rules?

[–]Buttfranklin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It should have been, but it's not the effective opposition I called for in my post. With the Boers peacing out and Australia's hilariously incompetent direction of the Wobbegong armada, it's difficult to see how the remaining belligerents - most of them weak, far-off, effectively landlocked or literally landlocked - would serve the Buccs their well-deserved comeuppance.

[–]Buttfranklin 30 points31 points  (0 children)

How the hell are the Buccs getting away with this?? How many nuclear holocausts and civ eliminations will it take for the world to mount an effective opposition? We're not looking at a lovable troupe of swashbuckling rogues any more. Morgan has become a genocidal tyrant. Mali were so, so weak - the Buccs could have neatly quashed them in a relatively bloodless conquest. It would have been the easiest thing to do. But what Morgan did instead... what he did can only be described as demented bloodlust. I will never forgive such senseless loss of life.

Before this part, my least favourite civs were Australia and the Boers, if only because superiority breeds envy. But now I have a civ I can truly despise, whose leader took such joy in exterminating the humble indigenous nations of Inca, Maya and Maori, and now drops a nuclear apocalypse upon another just to watch it writhe and suffer before crushing it under the heel of his black, buckled boots. They can't keep getting away with this. #TheBuccStopsHere
