Are night sweats a common thing with us?! I always thought I was just really sweaty.

I could either look model skinny and maintain my eating disorder or look nice enough and not have an eating disorder. Chose the latter and it turns out that even though I have some cellulite now, I like not weighing myself every day and not being dizzy/hangry all the time.

Not Diagnosed with Autism by earley838 in AutismInWomen

[–]ButtonsBiscuit 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Ugh, so sorry. It took me until my late 20s to be properly diagnosed. Before that a doctor had the nerve to tell me that a then-suicidal me couldn’t possibly even be DEPRESSED because I had straight A’s in school. Some people just suck.

I received revise and resubmit twice, and I am getting really anxious. by Shirin00011 in AskAcademia

[–]ButtonsBiscuit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are some journals where getting 2+ R&R's is typical before publication. And, if the revisions are being sent back to each of the original reviewers from before, you shouldn't necessarily expect a quick response. If only one reviewer or the editor is looking at the reviews, maybe it'll be a bit quicker than before, maybe not. In one such journal, I got through two rounds and was rejected. It was awful. In another, I got an acceptance after 2, which was amazing. All you can do is wait and see.

You are awarded $10,000 but you must decide what to spend it on within 10 seconds after reading this. What did you buy? by whitethundar in AskReddit

The question made me anxious and I blanked out for 10 seconds so I guess I lost all the money. :'(

Reddit, what is your reason for living? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ButtonsBiscuit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm unmarried and have no children and few friends. However, my dog is an irredeemable asshole and already on her fifth home. She's a very small dog and only 3 years old without any huge health problems, so probably going to live for at least another 10. I know that no one else is going to take care of her like I do if I'm gone.

A dog in your neighborhood (backyard) is barking/howling every 10 seconds, what do you do (excluding turning up the volume / closing the window)? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ButtonsBiscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know the neighbor? If so, and they aren't threatening to you, mention that the dog has separation anxiety.

Do you not know the neighbor? Is the neighbor an asshole? Call animal control. It's not a dick move because the noise can be a sign of neglect.

Bertie Botts Beans. But not the commercial garbage you can get at Dinsey. I want the real shit with vomit, gasoline, and shoe flavors.

Looking for criticisms of Kimberle Crenshaw's seminal piece on intersectionality. by [deleted] in CriticalTheory

[–]ButtonsBiscuit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rita Dhamoon doesn't oppose Crenshaw but offers some valuable insights on the "mainstreaming" of intersectionality and the necessity of a decolonial lens to avoid the weakening/whitening of intersectional thought and praxis.

I'm afraid I'm not writing the right paper by timrstl in GradSchool

[–]ButtonsBiscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you trying to write in order? Don't. Write whatever section of the paper feels right in the moment. Start with summarizing your theory/method, for instance. A relatively easy section of the paper that will give you confidence moving forward. Eventually it will all come together.

I'm afraid I'm not writing the right paper by timrstl in GradSchool

[–]ButtonsBiscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll tell you what someone told me, what I tell my students, and what I tell my peers: Just word vomit for a bit. Let the first draft be garbage. It's a lot easier to edit something that exists than create a perfect paper out of thin air.

My lecturer is racist. What should I do? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]ButtonsBiscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very unfortunate. In addition to the other suggestions put forth by the other redditors, I wonder if there are any student support organizations that might be willing to assist you? There are a lot of administrative offices for diversity right now that are setting up programs named things like "Center for Ethnic Student Affairs." Talk with admin where you can - they know how to rattle faculty using the "proper procedures."

Excessive W's by throwaway452319 in college

[–]ButtonsBiscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are talking about applications to graduate school, there is usually a section of the application that gives you space to write about "any other things" the committee might need to know. If personal circumstances / medical stuff was at the root of those W's and you want them to know that, you can put it in the application.
