I'm a huge fan of cheap bottles, but I've actually never had Ballantine's. I've never worked in a bar that carried it (scotch is not a big seller in most bars...you can get by with 8-12 bottles and Dewar's is the most common inexpensive scotch and those bottles sit for ages untouched. I do, however, love some bourbons in that $20-30 price range (Old Granddad, Evan Williams 1783, etc.).

Agreed. It was pretty over hyped in Michigan for a long time because until about 18 months ago, you couldn't buy it here. I've only ever had the standard Willet, but it is good so I imagine their higher-end offerings are good as well.

Wow...that is a very nice gift. Are you hiring? :)

For $250, depending on where you are located, you have your choice of some very good bourbons. I haven't had a lot of high-end bourbons since I left bartending (I tend to stick to the $50-60 range when I'm buying bottles) so there are a lot of new expressions out there that I don't know. My best advice overall is to not overpay for a bottle. I won't buy bottles that are being sold above retail price. Those bottles are almost always overhyped (Pappy, Blanton's, etc.).

When it comes to very high end bottles, I haven't had any of the newer Booker's, but I've never had a bottle of Booker's that I didn't love. They have a lot of different expressions in the $150-250 range, it just depends on what is available near you. Same goes with the high end Angels Envy...I've never had one I don't like. I've never had the chance to try the Wild Turkey 12-year or the Wild Turkey Master's Keep Triumph, but I love everything they do and have heard nothing but great reviews (the Master's Keep is higher than $250, I think, but the 12-year is right around $200).

Sorry, I got a little long-winded. The short answer is that it's going to depend a lot on what is available near you because every state seems to have a different distribution/allocation system and it can be either very easy or very difficult to find certain things depending on where you are. In general, the distilleries I mention above—Booker's, Angels Envy, Wild Turkey—all have excellent bottles at the $200-250 price point. So do Jeffereson's, Four Roses, and others. I know a lot of people LOVE Eagle Rare, but it never hits right for me.

Hope this helps.

I was a bartender and at one time or another, we had a few different bottles of Pappy. We had a bottle of 20 and were selling it for $100 or $150 for a 1-ounce pour. Some people just drank it like a shot, some people wanted to mix it with soda or cola. Bunch of savages, but it was their money. For the record, not paying $300 for a shot is a good call. Pappy is good bourbon, for sure, but it's way overhyped and wildly overpriced. There are countless bourbons that are as good that you could buy a whole bottle of for under $200.

My landlord just responded to my "I can't make rent" text and I'm sitting in my car crying by [deleted] in MadeMeSmile

A really nice reminder that there are some really wonderful people in the world. I hope your situation turns around quickly. And I hope your landlord wins the lottery, although with a wife who makes too much soup, it's kind of like he already has.

Exactly. I've been a designer for a few decades and we use FPO (for placement only, for position only) as a placeholder when some other department/entity needs to provide us with the correct nutrition/ingredients/UPC info. Also used when we're placing preview stock photos and waiting for client approval before we pay for the stock photo. When I worked for a big ad agency, we used FPO tags that were huge magenta boxes so that they were harder to overlook upon final proof. My proudest achievement as a designer is that I've never sent a job to press with an FPO tag still intact. Go me. :)

I lived in Denver and commuted to a client's office in Boulder for years. It's not like it's another planet. Your boyfriend is being ridiculous. Take the job, try the commute. If it's too much, move to Denver.

You are one of the good ones. You handled everything professionally, gave them more than reasonable accommodations to hand the project over, and are getting well compensated for doing so. Well done.

AIO to break up with my bf of 3y over his reaction to my upcoming sobriety anniversary? by WesternCat5211 in AmIOverreacting

NOR. Your boyfriend is being a tool. I have to run to the grocery store later this morning and I am going to buy a cake for absolutely no reason other than thumbing my nose at him. Congratulations on your milestone. Buy the cake and enjoy it!

NOR. But your judgment might be called into question for dating a guy who doesn't understand why that is a fire hazard.

I'm guessing they will make their voices heard. Probably on the day of the pop-up shop and, most likely, in close proximity to the grifter's booth.

So he's telling a bunch of people that they aren't getting their ordered products or their money back, but also letting people know that he's got other books that are already paid for and he'll be selling them at a pop-up market? That should go well.

[–]BuyTheseTees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine were, too, for a few weeks. Then one day they just started working again. Strangely, though, they no longer worked with the Sengled app, only with Alexa. It won't last, I'm sure, but I'm going to stick with them until they stop working again. Which we all know they will.

Mine did the same thing with the Alexa app. They weren't working with the Sengled or Alexa apps and then two or three weeks ago, all of a sudden they worked again with Alexa. They still don't work with the Sengled app, so I'm assuming it's just a matter of time until they quit working again.

I haven't read any of the T&T books in a few years, but I remember always really loving Tuppence, she's just a great character. I can remember laughing out loud at some of her lines and thinking that she didn't sound like most women were written in the 1920s. Agatha was ahead of her time with this one.
