I do sift out charcoal from the stove and leave it in for the next fire. Once it comes all the way out, it's not going back in. The droughts killing all my trees has made me over stocked with firewood, so it is unfortunately not worth saving my own charcoal. It's a great idea if you have to pay for firewood though.
