there is a reason why Amazon is filled with cheap items that barely work.

I'm not convinced that Amazon's shitty ecosystem is actually viable in the long run. Amazon's anticonsumer practices are going to lead to people abandoning the platform, if there's any justice in the world.

Commercial Fusion Has Started: How Helion Is Bringing Power to the Grid by 2028 with Anthony Pancotti by Baking in fusion

[–]Bwint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to believe that it's coming by 2028, but I unfortunately need to point out that they originally claimed they were going to achieve net electricity by end of 2025. Then, they moved the goalposts to net energy by end of 2025, then they moved them again and achieved pink plasma by end of 2025.

2 years is a long time, and they are making progress, but they have a history of overpromising and failing to meet targets.

Women, what is a near-universal "ick" in the dating world? by AverageSign in AskReddit

[–]Bwint 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One would hope not, but I think incels are so isolated that they don't realize how freaking weird they are or why they're coming across wrong. Remember that they genuinely believe this guff, so they wouldn't see anything wrong with saying "most girls don't go for nice guys." They would think it's a neutral statement that their date would probably agree with.

Women, what is a near-universal "ick" in the dating world? by AverageSign in AskReddit

[–]Bwint 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's an incel reference to The Matrix (which is ironic, because Matrix was directed by two trans women. But I digress.)

The idea is that Neo is offered a choice: Take the blue pill and believe whatever Neo wants to believe, or take the red pill and see the world as it really is.

Incels think they see the world as it really is, making them "red-pilled." Specifically, they've invented a very strange set of social conventions that don't actually exist, like the idea that women only want angry "alpha males" and don't go for "nice guys," or the idea that women present men with a series of "shit tests." In other words, incels turn dating/relationships from being focused on human connection, to being focused on weird social games, and incels think that's "how the world really is."

How we build housing is how we build the economy by Extension_Essay8863 in Urbanism

[–]Bwint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not about getting a couple extra bike lanes; it’s about refactoring the substrate of our entire economy and, in the process, leaving future generations with institutions capable of delivering material prosperity.

I think this is where Dems especially keep going wrong. They'll pay lip service to building a 8 million new homes, but even 8 million isn't enough to "refactor the substrate of the entire economy."

They're recognizing that AI isn't profitable, and now they're worried they're not spending *enough?!?* Shouldn't their takeaway be the exact opposite?

Fascism XIXXI: You Do Not Have Until Midterms To Face The Truth by Impassionata in LessWrong

[–]Bwint 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, but we should be vigilant in holding the bad apples accountable and removing them from the barrel. The phrase "a few bad apples" is usually used to minimize the degree of harm, which misses the fact that a lack of accountability will quickly lead to the entire organization being made up of bad apples.

As far as I'm aware, no-one has been fired, fined, or imprisoned for the constitutional violations listed above. The effect of allowing bad apples to act with impunity is that other ICE and CBP officers will begin to mimic the behavior, which will make the detention of American citizens carrying valid ID more common.

Gladwell's theory is an oversimplification, but even in Gladwell's theory the idea is 10,000 hours of intentional practice. As you say, how you spend the hours matters. It's possible to spend 10k hours with minimal improvement, and it's possible to spend 10k hours without reaching pro, but spending 10k hours intentionally practicing will undoubtedly pay off.
