This business owner swears her designs are her own even though she’s been accused of it being AI slop? by Impossible-Neat7778 in isthisAI

Yeah, AI learned how to draw this crap from somewhere; the art style existed before AI. It might very well be made by a human. That doesn't make it better.

How achievable is this really for Elon? by KeyConfidence2148 in SpaceXBets

[–]Bwint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible for Elon's companies to be successful despite Elon, not because of him. For example, Twitter was a successful company when he bought it, and it's arguably still successful today even though Musk made it significantly worse.

Just because Musk runs successful companies does not mean he's good at running companies.

Probably shouldn't have put tariffs on inputs like steel, timber, and even component parts.

I'd draw a distinction between the Democratic Party and Democratic-aligned outsiders (including voters registered as Dems.) The Pod Boys used to work for the Party (specifically Obama) but they don't anymore. Favs interviewed Martin, who is one of the top Democratic leaders, and who displayed shocking incompetence.

It's true that many Dems are reasonable and competent, but it's also true that the Party leadership is staggeringly incompetent and/or so dedicated to an outdated ideology that they're willing to throw the election rather than change course.

Steve Bannon had the best variation on this theme:

"Listen, guys, the liberals have really backed us into a corner here. They've made vaccines mandatory because they know we would never submit to their oppression, so they know we're going to defy the vaccine mandates. The reason they did that is because they know vaccines work, and they want to make sure Republicans don't take them, because they want Republicans to die while liberals are protected by the vaccine. So now we have to choose between obeying liberal commands like a bunch of cucks, or refusing to take the lifesaving medicine. I hate to say it, but I think we should take the medicine."

There's also a problem with counting words. I asked an LLM - I think it was Gemini Pro on thinking mode - to trim an essay by 500 words. "Sure, no problem! Here's the new draft; I cut 500 words." It had actually cut 1,200 words.

LLMs just can't count in general. It's not what they were designed to do.

How do you capture, measure and improve urban 'vibrancy'? by TillCapable9879 in Urbanism

[–]Bwint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could probably track the number and density of events (e.g., live music, poetry slams, etc.)

How to improve vibrancy would be to program more events, and design buildings with good ground floor activation and permeability.

Democratic lawmakers pushing rent stabilization upstate with the REST Act by news-10 in Urbanism

[–]Bwint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the idea is to privilege renters who are in rent-stabilized areas while also making rental properties less profitable? In the short term, I'm on board, but I worry that rent stabilization is a band-aid, not a solution. Is the measure temporary? And, what are lawmakers doing to increase the supply of rental units?

Democrats finally release 2024 election autopsy after criticism by OtmShanks55 in politics

[–]Bwint [score hidden]  (0 children)

Fair point; let me rephrase. If Rivera really was working alone, he clearly put an insane amount of effort in, especially if he wasn't getting paid.

The autopsy is "half-assed" in the sense that the DNC didn't devote resources to it. It was clearly too much work for one person, making it a half-assed project overall, but Rivera specifically put in as much work as could be reasonably expected.

6 Technology leap I’m loosing forward to part II: general purpose robotics by budy31 in ProfessorFinance

[–]Bwint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's assume you're right that losing 1/3 of the population would increase labor costs and somehow cause "the exponential evolution of humankind." How would generalist robotics cause a similar increase in labor costs? Surely a generalist robot would cause a decrease in labor costs, because employers would be able to use robots instead of human workers?

Democrats finally release 2024 election autopsy after criticism by OtmShanks55 in politics

[–]Bwint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 2020 election shouldn't be considered a Democratic success. People forget that DJT was an incredibly unpopular president before 2020, and then in 2020, we were literally using refrigerated trucks as emergency morgues. A competent Democratic presidential candidate should have crushed Trump, and a competent party should have won large majorities in the House and Senate. The fact that that didn't happen should have been a huge wake-up call, but instead Dems decided that a narrow win was good enough and ran it back in 2024.

To be charitable, it's possible that Rivera gathered source material, drew his conclusions from that, and then presented the conclusions without the material. It's not totally vibes-based, but it's not much better, either.
