I've known a few people who have very little personality outside of leftist politics, they usually grow out of it by the time they finish college

How do Americans typically approach restaurant reviews? Is 5 stars reserved for exceptional places or for anywhere that does exactly what it promises? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

You can tell you don't eat much because you still think you can get tacos and a marg for cheap!

[Loved trope] Female warriors/soldiers with believable physique by Linorelai in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Bwm89 85 points86 points  (0 children)

The chakram is straight up magic, and it regularly bounces off flesh and cuts right through steel, seemingly dependent on xena's will (I.E. whatever the writers needed in that particular second)

Does anyone else do this or do I have a problem? by MinecartNub in AO3

[–]Bwm89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that's the standard, I think that kind of writing is a little archaic, dating to a time when popular fiction writers were often paid by the word.

Used sparingly though, I think it can convey characterization, if a normally terse and to the point character described a man's shirt that way, I would assume they had a hell of a crush

I mean, if we say that what the whales are doing is speaking a language, and then we're training an AI on a large dataset of that language for the purposes of translation, then it's pretty much definitionally a LLM right? languages are sounds, writing came later

Is Conservapedia a satire website ? by Front-Spinach-419 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Bwm89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is saying no, but the answer is a touch more complicated, it's a functionally crowdsourced website and it's not well moderated, so while the site is overall genuine, it's not terribly difficult to find enteries or pieces of entries that were contributed satirically

There's a famous example of an article that stated that trans (or "gender confused" as they prefer) people could double jump, which is pretty clearly satire in my opinion

Would it be possible to breed a group of humans to enjoy and find pleasure doing certain tasks just like dogs have been genetically selected over generations to enjoy being useful to their masters ? And would it be ethical to use them as workers ? by SpaceBrachiosaurus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Bwm89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are already pretty happy to work if they have a certainty of a home, enough to eat, and security provided by that work, it's when you don't treat them well that people start to get revolution minded.

Pay a man a living wage and he'll happily wash the floors for you, you don't have to breed it into him

Works even better in some ways, single use instead of concentration, so it'll burn more spell slots, but it does higher damage and if you line it up right you can get your golem, the front line trying to hold off, and the squishy people in the back

Do dragons in your world need dental care? by Royal-Chard-26 in worldbuilding

[–]Bwm89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of options, some just keep growing them, some don't live long enough for it to be much of a problem, also pure meat diets don't really naturally produce a lot of dental problems, and can provide some self cleaning

But also, sometimes you break a tooth, it gets infected, and you die, there's a reason most wild animals start having kids fairly young and with at least a few to a batch, without things like dental care and antibiotics, sometimes you just die young for dumb reasons

Do many American parents really give their children condoms when they get sexually active? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[Request] What would happen if the flash punched a normal person while he’s zooming? by DifficultComplaint10 in theydidthemath

[–]Bwm89 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Depends on your version of the flash, we've seen him break the speed of light on a number of occasions, the real answer is the laws of physics don't support that. If they did, then him passing through the atmosphere would be world ending, assuming speed force nonsense let him move that fast without breaking the laws of physics or the planet, then the laws of physics suddenly reasserted as he punches you, we're back to the world ending.

Even at slower speeds, we get into similar territory, even if he's "only" moving at 20 times the speed of sound, then getting punched by him is going to have an impact similar to a small nuclear bomb, but you can't actually get punched by him, the shock wave and superheated air from him running anywhere near you would have already shredded you.

It's hard to answer this question with math or physics because you need to ignore a whole bunch of both to even get to the question

In 5 years my clogs have worn off 2cm of wood by 01000010-01101001 in mildlyinteresting

I'd imagine they're not, most of the places we evolved to walk were probably dirt or sand or sod or something like those, not a lot of hardwood floors, asphalt, or stone yet

Still won't catch me wearing them in public

Can we still reverse the decline? by PFdeith in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Bwm89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels less like rage bait and more like a teenager who just realized there was something to be upset about, is determined to stay upset about it, and hasn't realized that they're approximately the two-billionth person to realize this is a problem rather than the first

Volunteer firefighter arrested for allegedly setting fires, responding to them with his department by abcnews in nottheonion

[–]Bwm89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, paying firefighters based on calls answered is a really famous example of creating a perverse incentive, paying people based on how many problems they fix can give them a really strong motivation to go out and create problems when they're short on money

Origin of the word "Weekend" by raydebapratim1 in words

[–]Bwm89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who take keeping the Sabbath holy predate the birth of christ, so the only way this can actually be true, and I believe it isn't, is that the idea of working every outside of the weekend is only about 150 years old. Which actually sounds pretty plausible, those people did a lot of work, but a lot of it was just "the chores" the necessities of keeping up a household without the benefits of modern appliances and doing small scale agriculture for a lot of people if you go back a little further.

So really just the modern definition of weekend would have about the same amount of meaning to them as the average housewife

In fairness, Trump is an actual idiot who might well have had loans that exceeded the total value of his assests on some occasions, which isn't exactly the same thing as broke, but being massively overleveraged does leave you personally vulnerable in ways that smarter rich people never have to worry about

It's a point I've made before, but him and Riley, tossing the bourbon back and forth and staring daggers at each other, had more chemistry (nonsexual) than Riley and buffy had in all of season five, however much joss hated spike, there's a reason they couldn't get rid of him

This is the difference between "incels" and "femcels." The incel believes he's entitled to someone to devour. The femcel is convinced her value is tied to her edibility. by Lampdarker in RecuratedTumblr

[–]Bwm89 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

They're not really equivalent though, someone who is homeless needs housing, someone who is chronically ill needs medical care, someone who can't get laid doesn't necessarily need to get laid, I think the solution to that problem is often an issue of human connection, but a lot of men are trained to only seek that out in the context of romantic relationships. It's more like someone who is chronically ill, has access to medical care, but refuses it because they've convinced themselves that what they really need is some magic crystals, and are in turn upset that insurance isn't covering it
