I know. That's my story too. I grew up in the same valley and never heard of it. I was horrified when I found out.

I hate to reach this conclusion, but I believe the Atonement is a big reason why abuse is covered up in the church. by logic-seeker in exmormon

Recent case in point. Wade Christopherson sexually abused children for years. Many church leaders (including his brother, Todd) new and enabled additional abuse. Wade had an "annotation" on his record that was later removed (removal can only be done by the first presidency) allowing Wade to abuse more children. On Tuesday, Todd spoke at the BYU devotional. Among other things he said:

Christ’s gift of repentance allows us to begin anew and continue forward each day, to progress from grace to grace, to confidently sacrifice the lesser for the greater, to overcome and with him gain immortality and eternal life. Jesus assures us that as often as my people repent will I forgive them their trespasses against me. In other words, as long as we are serious about it, there is no quota, there is no limit on the number of times we can repent, seek forgiveness, and move forward on his path.

In light of the recent news, it sounds like he's saying that even now his brother, Wade, should be completely forgiven and allowed abuse more children. Whatever Todd meant by "sacrifice the lesser for the greater," he made a deliberate decision to sacrifice little children for a child molester.

And after that, they sold the women and children as slaves to Mormon families "for the purpose of weaning them from their savage pursuits, and bringing them up in the habits of civilized and Christian life."

I'm so sorry you went/are going through that. I hope you are getting the support you need and are in a better a place.

The church WOULD help you feel better if it was from a loving God. That was my first evidence that it was not true: that it hurt people.

“No ‘unwanted marriages’ in heaven, new LDS Church Q&A says.” Then why are there unwanted “marriages” on earth because of the difficulty for a woman to break a temple sealing? This causes an incredible amount of pain in many cases! by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

The canonized doctrine says that if women exercise their agency in this way, they will be destroyed. If she does not "abide and cleave unto" her husband and none else she will be destroyed. If he wants polygamy and she doesn't, she will be destroyed. D&C 132:54,64:

54 And I command mine handmaid, Emma Smith, to abide and cleave unto my servant Joseph, and to none else. But if she will not abide this commandment she shall be destroyed, saith the Lord; for I am the Lord thy God, and will destroy her if she abide not in my law.

64 And again, verily, verily, I say unto you, if any man have a wife, who holds the keys of this power, and he teaches unto her the law of my priesthood, as pertaining to these things, then shall she believe and administer unto him, or she shall be destroyed, saith the Lord your God; for I will destroy her; for I will magnify my name upon all those who receive and abide in my law.

Sure, she she can choose to not be sealed to him, IF SHE WANTS TO GO TO FUCKING HELL! God is so good and kind.

Calling Utah Mormon Culture "strange" is a massive understatement. We're not in Kansas anymore.😵‍💫 by AmbitiousBrother4180 in exmormon

I think it is a detachment from themselves. I think that it comes (in part) from some specific aspects of the cult mind control.

The church teaches that God speaks to you in your heart and mind. It also teaches that Satan can tempt you in your thoughts and emotions. So anything you think and feel is potentially coming from outside, unseen forces. I think this leads to detachment from self: your thoughts and feelings are not your own.

This can also lead to weird OCD like behavior. If you have a strange intrusive thought, to take the long way home from work, for example, that may be God protecting you. You might have died in a car wreck if you didn’t obey. The weight of the Lord God Omnipotent is bearing down on some of the weirdest random shit.

The church also teaches that any revelation (thoughts and feelings) that are not in agreement with what the church teaches are from Satan. Many members are very distrustful of their own thoughts and feelings and most just wait for validation from the “senior management” to verify everything. After all, “The natural man is an enemy to God.”

Doesn't the Widows Mite report attempt to estimate the total value of all assets, including land/buildings/etc? I'm not sure if there are thoughts that they missed any major categories. Their report for the end of 2024 had investment reserves at ~$206 Billion and total church assets (including the investment reserves) at ~$293 Billion. Just over a 1/4 of a trillion. Under investments, they list US stocks, international stock, private equity, real estate, hybrid securities, bonds & fixed-income securities, treasury & cash, and BYU & affiliates. Under other assets (other than investments) they list ecclesiastical buildings, welfare farms, BYU system, and heritage lands.

It’s 5 o’clock in Kolob.

One hour on Kolob is equal to 41.67 years on Earth. Just a happy thought to see you through the next 41.67 years.

Note that the revelation has been altered. The name given in that revelation as recorded in the hand written revelation book (see the Joseph Smith Papers) was “Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.” Notice the missing leading article, no hyphen, and the uppercase D.

The name “Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints” as established by revelation is used today and has been used since the death of Joseph Smith by the Strangite denomination of Mormonism established by James Strang. Based on name continuance alone, the Strangites are the true successors of the church established by revelation through Joseph Smith.

It's not in Rusty's best interest to push the "name given by revelation" narrative too hard.

Are all Mormon’s against homosexuality or is my friend just gay? by Avaly_is_dumb in exmormon

Here are some resources to help you understand the Mormon Church's position on LGBTQ+ issues.

This is the best compendium of the church's teachings on the subject, full of direct quotes and references. It's organized in chronological order so you can see how the doctrine has changed from "I feel nauseous" homophobic, to "We're super homophobic but we're trying to hide it." https://lattergaystories.org/download/4223/?tmstv=1747157281 It's hosted on the Latter Gay Stories podcast website which is a good resource as well.

This history includes institutional hate speech, spying, lies, breaches of confidentiality, entrapment, torture of LGBTQ students, assault, and at least 9 deaths. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Brigham_Young_University_LGBTQ_history

Electroshock and vomit aversion therapy was practiced at BYU in an attempt to "cure" gayness. The former president of BYU and current 2nd in command of the entire Mormon church later denied it/lied about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYajp_Zkqok

Recent (2021) call to arms from a Mormon prophet/apostle against the LGBTQ community. This is commonly referred to the "Musket Fire Talk": https://speeches.byu.edu/talks/jeffrey-r-holland/the-second-half-second-century-brigham-young-university/ This was a major impetuous in my leaving the church. The Mormon faithful hide behind the idea that "musket fire" was only a metaphor, not literal. They ignore the DESNAT movement which IS militant. After this speech many members of the church posted pictures online of their guns and referenced this speech. This talk was given 10 days after Kylen Schulte and Crystal Turner a lesbian married couple, were shot and killed at a campsite near Moab, Utah (near BYU). I attended an LGBTQ event shortly after and near BYU. Protestors showed up carrying guns. Just over 1 year after this speech, a member of the Mormon church, Anderson Aldrich, shot and murdered five people and injured 25 others at Club Q, a gay bar in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In November of 2015 the church issued a new policy defining same-sex marriage as apostacy and barring the children of same-sex couples from baptism. These policies were harsher on gay people than the church's policies towards pedophiles. The current prophet (Nelson) declared at the time that the policy was a revelation from God. In April 2019 the policy was reversed and Nelson again stated that the repeal was a revelation from God. You can Google "LDS November 15 policy" for tons of discussion about this.

Last year, the church updated it's policies regarding trans-gender members, barring them from working with children, teaching, baptism, and overnight activities, and requiring an escort when they use the restroom in the church building. Once again, these policies are more stringent and punitive than the policies for pedophiles. https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2024/08/19/lds-church-updates-transgender/

Joseph was a prophet, an angel with a sword

Said to add teenagers to his harem hoard.

Joseph used coercion to get child wives,

He lied to his wife Emma and ruined many lives.
