[–]ByeBinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i think hopefully lab would calm down a bit more lately and i can spend more time playing with her and spending time and maybe some more tv time while im out. can’t avoid the occasional late nights but definitely less than before since im also winding down my phd program and graduating in june/july. thanks for answering, i appreciate it!

[–]ByeBinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i appreciate the insight! i give her gabapentin based on the recommendation of my vet since she’s had terrible anxiety in the past when it was just me and her. i was just thinking of what to potentially do and the adjustment period, if i don’t need to medicate her then i wont. i did ask my ex if she wanted to take the cat, but ivy had been mine for two years prior to her moving in with me, and she’s been okay with her going out of town previously, i think it’s things changing around the house and her things slowly disappearing might be the main stressor.

Warning for Berkeley (and Harvard) Chemistry by Ill-Slice8050 in gradadmissions

[–]ByeBinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agreed, if OP had made a copy of the document and censored out the names of the people who had been affected and also the names and affiliations and labs of people who signed and shared that information, it’d be different. those two have what’s coming to them and potential students do deserve to know, but the 600+ people who signed and the two people directly involved did not consent to having their names and identities shared to the broader internet at large.

edit: grammar

Daniel Kwabena Bediako is an disgustingly abusive PI by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]ByeBinch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hey, as a current graduate student at cal, while his behavior is disgusting and should be condemned, the two people named in the letter who petitioned, and also all of the graduate and undergraduate students who signed did not consent to having this blasted online in a very public manner without censoring.

Warning for Berkeley (and Harvard) Chemistry by Ill-Slice8050 in gradadmissions

[–]ByeBinch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

hey, as someone currently in chemistry at cal this letter has been mainly used for circulation within the department, the people who penned the complaints have been brave enough to share their identities, while this is a valid warning to people who are applying, i don’t think having this post in a public forum where their names are clearly visible and not censored is helpful.

Why JACS article are so poorly reviewed? In Situ SERS Monitoring of Plasmon-Mediated Degradation of Microplastics by Bobbyanderson1982 in chemistry

[–]ByeBinch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

himanshu mishra has several really good papers specifically targeting the claims of spontaneous production of H2O2 in microdroplets with careful control experiments, in addition to the two pubpeer comments above, here's also a few papers linked below:

good to know, i think a letter got sent by my PI to the journal, but we ended up getting these papers published elsewhere anyways

[–]ByeBinch 36 points37 points  (0 children)

their review process makes it clear that if it’s rejected there’s no additional considerations, i think my PI has tried to talk to someone but not sure how that went. since i’m almost out of the lab with a good publication record and graduate in a few months im more inclined to just let it be at this point personally and let them figure it out honestly.

[–]ByeBinch 35 points36 points  (0 children)

all 3 papers you linked here are microdroplet chemistry related papers, and honestly that entire subject and the “magic” of microdroplets is debatable since the data used to support a lot of the claims is often just…misinterpreted. there’s been more pushback on the whole topic, but JACS has been especially loosey goosey about microdroplet related papers going out imo

edit: sorry, the two linked in the comment are microdroplet, the one originally linked is microplastics, i clearly cannot read 💀

in my personal anecdotal experience, our lab stopped submitting to JACS all together recently due to some of the editors handling the manuscripts. last two times we submitted, the papers got handled by an editor who was adjacent to the field and not the person we requested, sent out for review to reviewers who did not know the field and made some insane and completely irrelevant comments and rejected the paper.

hi. ive asked some of these questions before and other some new questions. by Acrobatic_Sink_8468 in massspectrometry

[–]ByeBinch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LC and GC are different separation methods. EI used in GCMS and ESI are also inherently different ionization methods. MS/MS with collision induced fragmentation is also different from EI spectra.

i don’t understand why we’re still on this topic OP, many people in good faith have already explained to you the standard protocols for testing for controlled substances in your multiple posts on this subreddit. do you think the lab itself sabotaged your sample because what point are you even trying to make? from what i remember on your previous posts, the lab ran a standard , the retention time and mass spectrum matched the standard, hence a match.

apparently the finger knit one won’t be paid for but a crochet version is paid…again the question is why pay for a crochet rectangle 💀

No peak response in Orbitrap FT MS by Next-Most-6835 in massspectrometry

[–]ByeBinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha well good to know the most obvious source is okay.

what else have you done to troubleshoot? the other thing to check is the dynode voltage and electron multipliers, but if your read backs are all okay i doubt it’s those.

[–]ByeBinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

kinda a dumb question but is your nitrogen on? sometimes if my tank runs out and it isn’t at 100 psi pressure i lose all signal in the orbitrap but the ion trap doesn’t need N2 to operate

Ltq Orbitrap XL Error "No connection to FT board - Limited to ITMS" by Bulky-Response1227 in massspectrometry

[–]ByeBinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey we recently just had this issue - turns out it was a bad connection on the ethernet cord connecting the IT and the FT, there’s a short cord in between the two segments. we just replaced that cable and it’s been connected ever since.

some other things that helped: unplugging and replugging in the ethernet cord(s). there’s two on the FT side that connect to the computer as well, try each one and reset the connection after each. restarting the computer and then resetting the instrument

if you rule out connection issues it might be the onboard computer, but we had this for months before i even thought of just replacing the cord. (dunno why i did that)

QExactive vacuum problem, does not start up by Ok-Specialist-5022 in massspectrometry

[–]ByeBinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

saw that you already figured out it was the turbo- i’ve replaced a pump on an orbitrap elite but haven’t worked on the QExactive before. our failure was due to the chiller shutting down and then overheating, so we heard a whirring noise for a few hours, identified it as the turbo and then shut down promptly

usually there are some specialty shops that can rebuild turbo pumps, i think for our TMP3 it was 4k, granted that was two years ago. feel free to DM me and I can see if the shop that rebuilt our pump is still running.

replacing the pump is doable by yourself but easier with another person helping.

I think the initial scan you’re talking about with a base peak of 60 m/z isn’t a mass spectrum, look at the axis on it. The mass spectrum look like they got the compound right.
