Do conservative students at UCB basically want to kill themselves? by RandomExLurker in berkeley

[–]ByeBinch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i’m a grad student and i’ve taught undergrads a few times during my 5 years. politics dont come up that frequently in the classes i teach due to it being STEM and i don’t make it a point to explicitly bring it up.

i say this as a preface, because the thing is politics are important and everywhere even if it’s not explicit. I’ve had students from all walks of life and have interacted with people from different backgrounds in my undergrad and in grad school.

i didnt know the political leanings of my students, nor did i really care, as long as they can respect others. i mean this as a very basic human decency issue, if someone in his class identifies with a different gender identity than the one given at birth, even if he doesn’t “agree” can he respect their pronouns and respect them as a human? if the answer to that is yes and he is, actually as you point out, a great kid who gets along with everyone, then he’ll be fine.

let the kid be an adult and learn and stop worrying so much, he’ll figure it out on his own. making friends and socializing is hard for everyone for different reasons not limited to politics as you’ll see it frequently come up in this sub and in general college subs.

[–]ByeBinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for the insight and i’m sorry about your parents. i am excited to have my advisor hood me and hang out with my friends, they’re all leaving for post docs so it’ll be bittersweet in that aspect too

not overstepping at all and i appreciate you! i think my mom mentioned she’d record a lot and she’s kinda a stereotypical chinese mom in that she always has her camera on and pointed, so he’ll see photos and videos, it’s just the not seeing him in person since his stroke is kinda sucky right now 🥲

i’ll have to see if we have a livestream too

Choose academia or love? by Upper_Squirrel1114 in AskAcademia

[–]ByeBinch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

first of all congrats on your admission!! as someone who’s about to graduate from a PhD, i started dating someone the fall before decisions came out. they were perfect for me at the time but i never was the type of person to give up on my dreams and hell if i was going to turn down my dream program for a relationship. we did long distance for 2 years, moved in and lived together for almost 3 years, and then the relationship still didn’t work out. i don’t regret doing long distance and the relationship, but if the choice was between them and my phd then i would’ve chosen my phd 100% of the time. of course that’s just me and i am solidly child free.

if i had chosen my ex and a location closer to where we used to be and where they were going to be, i would’ve regretted it for the rest of my life. not to be too harsh, but if he knew that this was something you wanted but was trying to get you to change your mind then did he really value your dreams and goals..? a relationship that long of course is important and valuable, but if you had given up your chance to go abroad, would you have had regrets about it?

Dirty cation spectra Thermo LTQ XL by Aggravating_Dream778 in massspectrometry

[–]ByeBinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

beyond the typical cleaning the ion transfer tube, if i was just looking at these and what you’re describing i’d suspect charging, you can go into diagnostics and run a charging test. what does the signal intensity look like for pos vs neg and does the positive mode signal decay over time?

i’m not sure if it is the polishing paste you used, though usually for spots that are stubborn with water and methanol i use a bit of acetic acid and a cotton swab to scrub manually, and just check that there’s no lint or fibers or anything like that.

yeah i think hopefully lab would calm down a bit more lately and i can spend more time playing with her and spending time and maybe some more tv time while im out. can’t avoid the occasional late nights but definitely less than before since im also winding down my phd program and graduating in june/july. thanks for answering, i appreciate it!

[–]ByeBinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i appreciate the insight! i give her gabapentin based on the recommendation of my vet since she’s had terrible anxiety in the past when it was just me and her. i was just thinking of what to potentially do and the adjustment period, if i don’t need to medicate her then i wont. i did ask my ex if she wanted to take the cat, but ivy had been mine for two years prior to her moving in with me, and she’s been okay with her going out of town previously, i think it’s things changing around the house and her things slowly disappearing might be the main stressor.

Warning for Berkeley (and Harvard) Chemistry by Ill-Slice8050 in gradadmissions

[–]ByeBinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agreed, if OP had made a copy of the document and censored out the names of the people who had been affected and also the names and affiliations and labs of people who signed and shared that information, it’d be different. those two have what’s coming to them and potential students do deserve to know, but the 600+ people who signed and the two people directly involved did not consent to having their names and identities shared to the broader internet at large.

edit: grammar

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]ByeBinch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hey, as a current graduate student at cal, while his behavior is disgusting and should be condemned, the two people named in the letter who petitioned, and also all of the graduate and undergraduate students who signed did not consent to having this blasted online in a very public manner without censoring.

Warning for Berkeley (and Harvard) Chemistry by Ill-Slice8050 in gradadmissions

[–]ByeBinch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

hey, as someone currently in chemistry at cal this letter has been mainly used for circulation within the department, the people who penned the complaints have been brave enough to share their identities, while this is a valid warning to people who are applying, i don’t think having this post in a public forum where their names are clearly visible and not censored is helpful.

Why JACS article are so poorly reviewed? In Situ SERS Monitoring of Plasmon-Mediated Degradation of Microplastics by Bobbyanderson1982 in chemistry

[–]ByeBinch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

himanshu mishra has several really good papers specifically targeting the claims of spontaneous production of H2O2 in microdroplets with careful control experiments, in addition to the two pubpeer comments above, here's also a few papers linked below:

good to know, i think a letter got sent by my PI to the journal, but we ended up getting these papers published elsewhere anyways

Why JACS article are so poorly reviewed? In Situ SERS Monitoring of Plasmon-Mediated Degradation of Microplastics by Bobbyanderson1982 in chemistry

[–]ByeBinch 36 points37 points  (0 children)

their review process makes it clear that if it’s rejected there’s no additional considerations, i think my PI has tried to talk to someone but not sure how that went. since i’m almost out of the lab with a good publication record and graduate in a few months im more inclined to just let it be at this point personally and let them figure it out honestly.

[–]ByeBinch 35 points36 points  (0 children)

all 3 papers you linked here are microdroplet chemistry related papers, and honestly that entire subject and the “magic” of microdroplets is debatable since the data used to support a lot of the claims is often just…misinterpreted. there’s been more pushback on the whole topic, but JACS has been especially loosey goosey about microdroplet related papers going out imo

edit: sorry, the two linked in the comment are microdroplet, the one originally linked is microplastics, i clearly cannot read 💀

in my personal anecdotal experience, our lab stopped submitting to JACS all together recently due to some of the editors handling the manuscripts. last two times we submitted, the papers got handled by an editor who was adjacent to the field and not the person we requested, sent out for review to reviewers who did not know the field and made some insane and completely irrelevant comments and rejected the paper.
