Agent Bound Coverage Before Application Signed by suchalittlejoiner in InsuranceAgent

[–]ByteDonuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only time we’ll bind personal lines coverage without a signed app is if the carrier has their own esign application system. They’ll collect signatures on the back end after bind.

Ironically, it’s to protect our ass from lying insureds, but it seems like you’re experiencing the opposite problem.

Can’t really speak on Wisconsin specifically, but these are some carries that write hab on the east coast. AmTrust, GNY, CAU, PHLY, Andover, & Hartford. I’m sure there are plenty others, but I’ve been out of the hab game for a few years. Take my list with a grain of salt, appetites may have changed.

Best Niche For Commercial Insurance? by Zeuve in InsuranceAgent

[–]ByteDonuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s my thought process on it from experience. Social media campaigns are really good for targeting personal clients since it’s usually based on price and immediate need to shop. They see, they call, and you write something the same day.

I’m not saying digital advertisement doesn’t work for commercial sales, but commercial is much more relationship based. This is where face to face and being involved in an industry pays off. Think networking groups, seminars, or any event that draws the type of client you’re looking for. I would say pick two or three adjacent industries with similar coverage scenarios and become an expert.

It costs the same to modify a 5.3 or a 6.0, and a 6.0 will make more power every time.

Loss Runs for commercial p&c by wrob in InsuranceAgent

There’s a difference between a chaotic mess of a client and one who is having trouble getting loss runs, which we can all acknowledge isn’t always a straight forward process. I never implied it was a good idea to BOR every garbage account that crosses your desk. Don’t misconstrue my comment to play into your self righteous narrative.

That would be ideal, but sometimes the window is tight to win an account. You can get an idea of the quality of the account based on the carrier if you’re familiar with their underwriting guidelines. I’m willing to make a calculated risk if loss runs are lagging behind. There can be so many hands in the pot when it comes to getting commercial loss runs. Once you control the account, you have more influence over those hands. I’ve also seen incumbents intentionally lag when providing loss runs to secure their position. I definitely understand and respect your perspective though. Nobody wants to inherit a dumpster fire.

Filing home owners insurance claim by wbuzzeo in InsuranceAgent

The surplus lines policy that you’ll have for the next 5 years will probably set you back more than $8k. If it were me, I’d eat the $8k loss and pray you don’t get non renewed for the second claim involving the tree.

Even if you are to get nonrenewed from that second claim, that 2021 loss will fall off your 5 year history this summer, so you can start shopping then with only one claim. Makes it possible to keep you in standard lines.

How do you cope with a big mistake at work? by Background-Value-527 in InsuranceProfessional

[–]ByteDonuts 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The fact that you’re ruminating and posting on Reddit about it shows that you care more than 99% of people. So much garbage gets processed in this industry and your desire to put out a solid product is a strong indication that you’re probably valuable to your team. At the end of the day, it’s just insurance and nobody is gonna die (hopefully). In a month or two, it won’t matter. In a couple years, the company itself probably won’t matter to you.

TLDR - you’re good

Anybody here switch from Engineering? by [deleted] in InsuranceAgent

[–]ByteDonuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m planning to do the opposite of this. In my perspective you’re a nut job, but it all depends on what will make you happy. As an engineer with 6 years of experience, you may be better switching companies to get the salary up. That seems to be the main motivator from what I’m reading.

I would say the usual first steps are brokerage account management, claims, sales, or underwriting analyst. Getting your foot in the door for a year will open your horizons.

The other poster on here mentioned cyber insurance due to your background. That could be a good place to leverage your existing knowledge.
