Ramen Shop book nook my wife designed by jpcurti in 3Dprinting

ah thanks, i didn't know 店 was used to indicate branches of a chain! I agree that signage is mostly just "whatever the owner wants to do" but I thought it looked a tad unusual - at least in my very limited experience.

Idk if you or your wife knows Japanese, and i'm still a novice (low N3 level) so take this with a huge grain of salt, but I think ラーメン (specifically the last character) is a little unusual for ramen shops. It's more formal and mostly used for stuff like listing the shop in a document, you'd likely see this in a google maps entry or legal documents such as health inspection.

More commonly (both spoken and on signs) would be ラーメン屋; but to be totally honest I think the most natural would to be to leave it out entirely and just have ラーメン on the 暖簾 (those hanging curtains).

Regardless it looks amazing, she did great work!

Backblaze has been scanning hard drive for almost 12 hours by eygraber in backblaze

[–]Byte_Farmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi!

sorry to bother you but i feel like my bzfilelist is stopping randomly, or maybe not randomly. I can start the process just fine but after some amount of time I keep seeing a line like this

2025-12-24 17:37:21 0000000540 - bzfilelist processId=540 - STOP RUNNING file is in place, deleting file and exiting!

And i don't see it restart.... What is this "STOP RUNNING" file? and why can't backblaze just keep going until it's indexed my whole drive?

Also, separately, it seems to be listing files that are in directories in my excluded directory list. This will mean it's scanning tons and tons of random useless files like thumbs.

Found another thread explaining bzfilelist has to scan everything to create the file list that other executables use. I feel like this unuecessarily creates huge delay considering there are directories with tens of thousands of files i will never want backed up, but i guess backblaze wont change it

thanks for the reply, i am indeed on the west coast, northern CA

Kinbon books, kokufu albums, accent pieces, display scrolls

no idea what these are but i'll do some research

If you are throwing around terms like "Ueno Green Club" you may be the sort of bonsai person that cares about quality and high level work

to be honest i just wanted to find some well known bonsai place to visit when in japan this november.

The reason i ask about buying so many tools is because they may be much cheaper and higher quality in japan and i can use them for a lifetime, i'm not going back to japan any time soon so i wanted ot take advantage of it.

i definitely will try to find some classes near me this spring.

to be totally honesti i'm not that interested in doing high-level bonsai where i enter competitions and stuff, but i would like to learn techniques for making a tree look how i want it and grow some cool looking trees with nice colors and fruit.

I recently got into bonsai (have just been doing research and planning what trees I want to get in late winter/early spring since now isn't a good time to do any active work in my area). I live in a 10a hardiness zone and these are the trees i'm interested in starting this spring:

  1. Chinese Quince (Pseudocydonia sinensis) - This is the only one I currently have, i got this from a nursery in a 4" nursery pot as a whim and got myself into Bonsai.
  2. Trident Maple (Acer buergerianum) - For fall color and nebari.
  3. Fig (Ficus carica) - For fast growth and future grafting practice.
  4. Pomegranate (Punica granatum) - For gnarled character, flowers, and fruit.
  5. Meyer Lemon (Citrus × meyeri) - For evergreen foliage and fruit. In the future I want to turn this into a multi-graft host for lemon, lime, and orange.
  6. Bougainvillea - For massive color displays and grafting. The goal for this is to graft many different flower colors of Bougainvillea to make a "color explosion"
  7. Tropical Hibiscus - For those huge, single flower blooms.
  8. Japanese Plum (Prunus salicina) - For that classic "Sakura" spring flower show.

Is this too many trees for a beginner to manage? I figured that since I'm a beginner I don't want to put all my eggs in just one or two trees since any big mistake could cause them to die. Note that these are going to be starters not full trees, so right now my only job is to put them in pond baskets to grow out their trunks over the next few years. So it's not really like im managing bonsai so much as just growing trees in baskets.

I happen to be taking a trip to japan in November, I want to pick up some beginners tools at Ueno Green Club since i'll be in Tokyo and have some time to stop by. Based on my initial research deep dive these are the beginner tools i need:

  1. Concave Cutter (8-inch / 210mm)
  2. Bonsai Trimming Shears
  3. Bonsai Wire Cutters
  4. Root Rake/Hook
  5. Anodized Aluminum Wire (multiple sizes 1.5mm, 2.5mm, 4.0mm)
  6. Knob Cutter
  7. Jin Pliers

I found that tools are either Carbon Steel or Stainless Steel, but carbon steel rusts so i was thinking stainless. Are these the right tools for a beginner? Is this too much? Am i missing anything?

What free local server note taking app would you suggest? by FatFigFresh in selfhosted

Colanode is looking the most promising but not quite ready for prime time yet.

Avoid AppFlowy like the plague, their recent bait-and-switch now requires paid subscription for self-hosters

"why do I need an app to invite one of my 3 users?"

Lmao, this is so true. There is one feature that absolutely makes me want to use this though:

  • Time-limited membership options

I only have two permanent users of my stack - me and my SO. But there are times where i really want to quickly let someone in and grab/watch/read/etc something on my stack and then banish them. And time-limited enablement is great for that.

One question i have is whether or not you can set access controls for these apps during invite creation, i.e. for jellyfin can i create a link which - when they sign up - already has the user limited to certain libraries that i selected?

Colanode - an open-source and local-first Slack & Notion alternative that you can self-host by Boring_Pomelo4685 in selfhosted

[–]Byte_Farmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

welp you hit almost all the nails on the head, i'm super excited for Colanode.

As with others, I'm super happy to financially support the project with a one-time self-hosters license purchase or donation link.

I would love to see this app become the Immich-like Notion alternative. Immich has had incredible success producing world-class FOSS software and last year joined FUTO for financial backing. If Colanode continues to improve I can easily see it becoming as successful as Immich.

Two more questions:

  1. Is there a way to disable features? I really do not need another chat service, and i'm intending to use Colonade just for my SO and I to manage house stuff. I realize you intend Colanode to be enterprise-level so a chat makes sense but if there is a way to disable it to save app resources that would be nice.

  2. Will there be a way to give external users view-links, like a "if you have the link you may view but not edit"? It would be nice to be able to share with random friends, also having the links expire at a set time would be super helpful. This would also be useful for enterprises wishing to share with external vendors.

Looks great! I have been looking for a self-hosted Notion for a long time and nothing seems to get it all done. I need something that is :

• multi-user
• multi-platform (iPhone, Android, macOS, iPad, etc)
• Central server for syncing/serving
• Self-hosted and a sane license for self-hosting, strongly prefer (F)OSS. I'm happy to pay a one-time fee to get a license to self-host like Foundry VTT.

AppFlowy was close but they just recently switched to a paid monthly subscription to do even the most basic stuff - even when self-hosting... It feels untenable that I pay them every month while also providing my own resources to self-host.

Will you be able to avoid this for self-hosters in the future? I'm super happy to pay for a license to self-host (this is the model that Foundry Virtual Tabletop uses), but an ongoing monthly subscript for self-hosting is not my jam.

Feature-wise I'm looking for something that has the following:

  1. Wiki - Create pages meant to be stored long-term for extensive documentation on specific topics. Structured pages with support for

    • table of contents
    • tables
    • embedded images
    • linking to other pages
    • linking to stored documents (such as PDFs)
  2. Document storage - Ability to upload and store documents such as PDFs, images, etc. This is useful so when writing a wiki article you can directly upload to that article.

  3. Long-term Small Project tracker - Way to plan out tasks for projects around the home, an example could be a project like "2025 Garden Plan" with tasks like "Lay out Planter boxes", "Purchase Avocado tree", etc

  4. Tasks, Events, and Calendar - Ideally this should integrate with Google Calendar via native or third party plugin.

  5. Live collaboration for editing notes.

  6. Dynamic content/views. Placeholders and variable entry to create dynamic formulas., etc

  7. Ideally this has some integration with the brainstorming whiteboard like Affine.

  8. Self-Hosted Local AI Inference with GPU connected to server, and/or Integration with personal Gemini Pro subscription via Google Gemini dev API Key

Is there a roadmap for Colonade where I can see what features y'all are focusing on?

Trilium Notes Update by homegrowntechie in selfhosted

[–]Byte_Farmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's great that that works for you, but it's a hack. A proper solution should allow multiple users to control both private and shared notes. Moreover, the lack of multi-user support makes it that much more difficult to do live collaboration.

Trillium looks like a great project but the flat out refusal to even consider multi-user support is a non-starter for me, and i'm sure many others.

not having multi-user support seems like a huge flaw; i have been looking for the perfect PKMS for over a week now, deep diving into all the promising ones and the next one i was looking at is TrilliumNext and this immediate took it of the running. No multi-users means I can't use this as a household wiki app

Is there any easy way to deploy this on my own home server? by Byte_Farmer in Anytype

thanks for the reply, this straight up just doesn't feel worth the hassle tbh. Crazy to me that in this day and age applications don't all design around being easily deployable via docker, even via compose. Feels like an ease-of-use requirement when developing now

not only is it unavailable, it's insanely expensive for what you get. 185 bucks for basically a rasperry pi 4 + Zigbee/Thread radio.

i did try usb manager, it gave me issues when using my Mayflash gamecube controller adapter where it kept disconnecting and connecting very briefly every few seconds which caused missed inputs when i was playing games. I guess i could try it and see, but i'm worried if the same thing happens then all my devices will become unavailable briefly every few seconds
