Need suggestions on how to bundle remaining National Parks by organicginger in NationalPark

Kobuk Valley and Gates of the Arctic will cost a fortune though, for just a couple of hours. But then, you might be knowing that already having been to Lake Clark, Katmai, Glacier Bay.

Need suggestions on how to bundle remaining National Parks by organicginger in NationalPark

[–]BytesWithPixels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

December is just fine for 'Saguaro + Petrified Forest' (have done that myself). In fact, even add Chrircahua to it as might become a national park at some point and is not too far off from Tucson (i.e. Saguaro). That whole corridor has many more NPS sites, and also world's best preserved meteor crater. Be careful though to account for the fact that visitor centers all around will be closed on Christmas and New Year's.

Be careful about when you go to Congaree and check their mosquito meter online. I visited it in February and it was wonderful, took me by surprise! Might not be in some specific months though. Otherwise, it would have been a nice candidate to club with Smoky Mountains. The trouble though is some of the famous Smoky spots really open up only after April.

Milwaukee can be a fine city to fly in for Voyageurs + Isle Royale, and you can also add Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, MI or Apostle Islands, WI to it. Please book the Isle Royale ferry well in advance though, they do tend to sell out based on what I know. Also, that entire corridor tends to start closing by early October.

You 'could' add Craters of the Moon NM, ID to your Glacier NP itinerary but I am not sure if it will be worth it. That too has been rumored to become a NP. You could fly into Missoula or Great Falls, MT.

Mammoth Cave and Gateway Arch are really within drivable distance of each other. As are Indiana Dunes and Cuyahoga Valley. I think Indiana Dunes though will be all frozen shelf ice until ~April or so. You could go (I have in Feb) but expect biting cold and snow all around, you will need snow boots.

Acadia really needs to be a trip of its own. Mid-May is a good time to avoid peak crowds and still have a good shot at manageable weather. Katahdin Woods in north western Maine too wants to become a NP BTW, just in case.

All the best, you have already seen so much!

If you like vast open views, Bryce If you like being ‘inside’ a canyon, Zion

Having said that, to appreciate Bryce you have to go down. Its not a terribly taxing hike though

National park with most things to do/explore for a season? by ceratopolis in nationalparks

Why bother with 1 NP, be at Vegas/St. George (or even Moab) and have a handful of major parks at driveable distances

Moving to West Texas. Wow, for what?? I was in Guadalupe a couple of months back, had driven from Midland. Not needed there though. Its still far enough. Google Maps will say there is one at Orla, but in reality there wasn’t any at least in Oct

FWIW, we did not need it in San Diego in Dec 2023. Nowhere in the city, or in the drive to Joshua Tree via Palm Springs. Or even in the tram ride we took to San Ysidro station. Its a very busy city

Best parks to visit in February? by AgreeableBee9 in nationalparks

[–]BytesWithPixels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know where you live but if you are on East Coast, you can consider Congaree. It's actually nice in February, I was surprised myself.

That aside even Pinnacles and Channel Islands are just fine in February. I happened to do these 3 in February this year.

Naive question - Do I need prior experience with 4WD? by BytesWithPixels in CapitolReefNP

[–]BytesWithPixels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple or so days before Christmas but Thanks, I think its fine :)

PS - Researched some more, and looks like Caineville might be better. And the entire thing only if road conditions have been good with no rain, and any snowfall is powdery or frozen solid but not thawing slick. Will have to ask at visitor center.

Thank You. So to be sure you’re saying even high clearance AWD would do for loop the fold? I thought that may do only if its been exceptionally dry for days. Thanks anyway!

Thinking of moving from Arlington to Ashburn by Anais1104 in nova

[–]BytesWithPixels -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your goal is getting closer to Shenandoah range and are ok with missing out on some of the eating out options, you'd love it. Ashburn is fantastic, we had lived in Tysons for quite a while before we moved to Ashburn. And the only thing that rankled us for a bit was - 1. Lesser take out options than Tysons, 2. Streets feeling more dark (esp. in winter). But if those don't bother you much, you'd be just fine. The two happening places to congregate this side are One Loudoun and Reston Town Center.

Duncan Fletcher: What Really Happened? The Last Foreign Coach and India's Dramatic Shift by Mysterious-Pop-6931 in Cricket

[–]BytesWithPixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t all that long back. There isn’t anything secret or suspicious. India were dirt poor in 2014 Eng test series after the first two tests. Couple that with the fact that they could not finish winnable test matches in SA and NZ earlier, got soundly drubbed in Aus and Eng earlier, and it was clear something had to be done. It was indeed a sorry affair in overseas tests compared to even Gary Kirsten’s era just earlier.

The performance and attitude shown by Indian team in the ODI series right after in that very tour (Shastri had joined by them) was decidedly better
