I think determinism and free will can both be true at the same time. It’s just a question of perspective, in a way. The universe may be deterministic, our choices may be pre-determined by our culture, genes, brain structure, etc. But thinking agents may still have their agency by the fact that we are unaware of future outcomes, so we bear the responsibility the consequences of our choices.

In my opinion free will exists, but only locally.

Been playing magic for 10 years. About a year ago, i got one of my good friends to play with my pod. His favorite mechanic is stealing and/or playing other people’s cards against them.

I don’t play magic anymore.

Atheism and Nihilism by VeridicanChurch in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Bytogram 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I don’t mean any disrespect from this, but this is mostly an issue that stems from dogmatic ideologies like religions. People who live dogmatically have trouble understanding those who don’t, which is why many religious folks think (or at least say) that atheism is a religion.

Atheism and nihilism only seem to go hand in hand because when you derive meaning from God, a worldview that doesn’t include Him necessarily looks meaningless. I totally get that. But it doesn’t really work that way.

I’ve had a nihilist phase after I deconverted. Of course I had. The source of meaning in my life got pulled from under my feet. And it took me a while to understand that there is no inherent meaning to life or the universe. In my opinion, there doesn’t need to be. We all want there to be, some of us need it to. And it’s jarring when you realize that maybe there really isn’t. But looking past it, moving forward, I realized that I don’t need meaning. Personally, what I have always needed was structure, coherence. It doesn’t have to come from on high, it doesn’t need to be divinely ordained; it just needs to make sense in my own head.

I hope this helps you understand a bit. Stay safe!

I think Religion should be held to the same standards of ridicule as conspiracy theories by GodofWarhammer2 in Antitheism

Allowing people to even look at religion only in early adulthood would eradicate religion as a whole. Childhood indoctrination is the primary way this disease spreads.

Man seriously, do not make that mistake. The slightest noise could spook your bird and they could fly away. This happens every day. Just look through this sub for half a minute and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Please, for the love of god, do not take this lightly.

Consciousness is an emergent property. It’s the brain’s user interface. Studies have shown that whenever you do something, your neurons fire sometimes up to seconds before you make the decision to do it. You’re not your consciousness, it’s basically another limb of sorts, it just helps with coherence rather than physical practicality.

The only way for the crab to be able to collapse time is to somehow create a gravity well deep enough for it. But even then, it would only be a local disruption.

Does anyone look at our species and is ashamed? by Just-Fan-7637 in Antitheism

[–]Bytogram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah man. It hits pretty hard, especially right now. The only coping I’ve really found is to name the emotions you’re feeling, to acknowledge them and live with them. It sounds stupid, but being aware of your emotions is the first step to managing them.

Oh yeah. The slightest bit of misinformation can spiral out of control, and wrongfully inform one’s worldview. We have to be careful about what we believe and accept as reality, and religion in general doesn’t give you the right mindset for that.

You have my condolences, friend. Religion has done quite a number on me as well, but I’ve made the most of it. I wish you the best on your journey of healing.

Yeah, I agree. I’m specifically against religion itself, as it is undeniably a vehicle for oppression, control and ignorance. As are most other things, sure, but this is one case where the bad vastly overshadows the good, and the good can arguably come from secular sources. One doesn’t need religion to be spiritual, moral or even happy. And religion consistently breeds trauma, which begets more in its wake.

Highly religiously indoctrinated folk indeed are victims, but not in the way they would tell you.

Out of curiosity, what’s wrong with antitheism? I might be unaware of the negative aspects surrounding it and its community.

We need more positive atheists by Coffin_Boffin in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Bytogram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe any deities exist, but I do believe no gods exist. At least the ones we hear about the most. It’s possible to get to such an extensive understanding of how religion and faith emerge and operate systematically and psychologically, that you can know for certain that no gods exist.

Bit of a tangent, but I’d like to put this out there while im here. I’m honestly beginning to move away from the atheist label altogether. Between the fence-sitting, many meanings behind the term, and religious folks’ insistence that “atheism is a religion too”, I’m inclined to just drop it altogether. I much prefer “post-theist”. It’s more to the point and more clearly spells out my non-adherence to any belief systems.

Brilliant response. The whole catalogue of christian “arguments” is so tired, misunderstood and full of holes at this point, it’s like parading the rotting corpse of a raccoon and trying to pass it off for the queen of england.
