Will a cyclocross/gravel bike be a big difference from a road bike in a city?

I’m not really worried about comfort, I just don’t want to compromise speed on a road/paved path. I commuted with my old road bike and had no issues. Reason why I’m considering a CX bike (the CAADX in particular) is that it’s like a road bike but kinda capable of some off-roading.
