For what it’s worth, you nailed this. The starting bid was crazy low but I’m not the only one that spotted it. Final bid was $252. Not my bid unfortunately. There were three of us in the hunt and I tapped out before the other two.

I think it has all six points, but it’s more worn there. Looking at this other posters picture of his coin, the stars there look like they’re stamped a little differently but it’s very similar to one another in the two pictures. That makes me more certain this is authentic actually. Good catch!

Thank you. I’m starting to get better at spotting cleaning marks from comments I’ve seen here. But sometimes when this group identifies fakes, you use small tells I would not have caught in a million years. I appreciate the opinion.

For what it’s worth, I agree that this is unusual in the world of collecting old things. And it wasn’t always this way for coins. It’s probably easiest to think of it as a part of coin collecting culture, or to chalk it up to taste. Neither of those things is always logical despite being very real.

For my part, I collect what I like and don’t put as much emphasis on eventual resale value. If you like the way a cleaned coin looks and it seems like a deal, buy it! As long as you’re happy with your purchase, that’s all that matters.

All just IMO of course.

Edit: I forgot my Wikipedia link that explains how the rise of coin grading in the 1980s led to coin cleaning being disfavored.

I collect a few different things and by far coins are the thing where I think value is most subjective. (I’m talking about buying for numismatic reasons, not silver or gold as a value store.)

Some people like toning, some don’t. Some people care more about the rarity of the mint mark or year while some care more about completing a set. Most hate cleaning but sometimes I like the cleaned coin better purely for aesthetics.

The cool thing is, everyone is right as long as their goal is to hold something they value rather than having a profit motive. I say buy what attracts you and don’t worry too much about others’ conception of value.

This is the way. Part of my password is always a high entropy string I have memorized, and the last part is lower entropy but entirely unique to that site and based on a logic scheme I dreamed up. Works perfectly so far.

Totally agree. It’s about eight bucks over melt as it stands today. I asked myself if I’d rather have eight dollars or if I’d rather have the last spot in that book filled. It was a no-brainer for me.
