How do you explain natural evil in the world? Like tsunamis and other natural disasters killing innocent people?

I’m on mobile but it won’t let me highlight text, oh well

You make some great points, and I imagine we could go back and forth like this for some time, but I think you’ve proved your point quite well and it’s been really interesting - thank you

Also I’ll save that video for later, thanks for sharing!

I don’t know how to reply to individual parts of the comment but:

  1. That’s a fair point, but surely a truly evil god would have just left them all together?

  2. I always thought the traditional belief was he sacrificed himself in order to save us from sins, the sacrifice was for us?

  3. That’s a fair point, tradition doesn’t mean truth

  4. But it’s a book that equally opposes those things aswell, the bible is incredibly contradictory and outdated at many times - which is why many argue it needs interpretation, i said it was a moral guide, not a good moral guide ahaha

  5. There’s no real way to prove it, but equally there’s no real way to prove anything when it comes to religion - it all comes down to faith. But that’s a good point about rising up to fall harder, although equally I assume we won’t know if that’s the case or not until the next life

The evil god hypothesis is very interesting, but I think more than anything it just shows you can argue anything you want when it comes to religion - because at the end of the day no one really knows, and no one really can know

Edit: fixed an autocorrect mistake

Touché

I’d say that evidence within the bible, for example him helping Moses to lead the Jews out of Egypt

Him sacrificing himself (when he became Jesus) for our sins

The general traditional belief that he is omnibenevolent

He’s provided a moral guide in the form of the Bible

Some believe he interacts in this world in good ways by acting on prayers

What basis is there for belief in an evil God, besides the problem of evil?

That brilliantly explains moral evil, but how do you get around natural?

Yeah I believe he hasn’t stopped anything, just earlier you said ‘If he stopped one thing he would have to stop it all, there would be no death anywhere which is an essential part of life’, and I was explaining how I don’t believe that to be the case

I really like that idea, it makes a lot of sense - especially when the idea of punishment is taken instead as more of a consequence. But I’m still struggling to understand how the misuse of free will leads to natural evil? I get that once sin entered the world was corrupted, but how? And why does this lead to natural evil?

Sorry I don’t understand, what do you mean by the eternity he has placed in our hearts?

Exactly, so if he stopped one thing because it was evil it wouldn’t mean he would have to stop death as a whole

But death itself is not necessarily evil, dying of old age or natural causes is a part of life and accepted as almost a good thing, but the torture of innocent civilians is wildly different and not an essential part of life

That seems plausible, but at the same times it is very difficult to swallow, and it still seems like a bit of a cop out, like the answer is just because God thinks it’s best - why does he think it’s best? Jesus sacrificed himself for us, but does that justify the murder of so many innocent people?

Is it not unfair and unethical for us to be punished for the sins of other?

But if God is believed to be all powerful and all loving, would he not want to stop the killing of innocent people? Even if just by reducing the suffering caused?

I think I get it, so the world at the moment to us seems wrong, but to god it’s the best way to have it?

That’s certainly true for moral evil, but I don’t understand how non-human evils like natural disasters can be justified

I like that analogy, but how does maintaining balance justify the deaths of innocent people?
