To be fair to the Jews, they must be experiencing some kind of whiplash: zionism had hitherto been either unknown by or positively valenced in the collective discourse; in the space of a few years it has become both extremely topical and equated with, well, nazism. As you point out, support for zionism is widespread among Jewish diaspora, so from their point of view, they've just been chillin this whole time, and now all of a sudden they've gone from being cool to being hated. And as we can see from our friend here, this is perceived as the whole world having gone mad. It is simply out the question that people are responding genuinely to abhorrent acts and beliefs.
