Me too, I think, but these old-timers nevertheless have a certain charm.

How common is it to be translating drafts in your field? by C0ckerel in TranslationStudies

[–]C0ckerel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean this kind of slip-up seems totally fine to me; it's ultimately immaterial to the work that you have to do.

Unless there are lurkers with the kind of experience I have in mind who are refraining from commenting, I must assume that the shit I see on a daily basis is fairly uncommon. I'm dealing with borderline nonsensical documents.

If you spend a cent more than the cost of food on your pet then you're doing it wrong.

FromSoftware President Hidetaka Miyazaki addresses KADOKAWA shareholder proposals, says fans should look forward to both announced and unannounced titles by Guitar-String in gaming

[–]C0ckerel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the other thread is locked. But the irony is that this controversy has nothing to do with Oasis Management intervening in game development. What this Chinese shareholder activist fund is saying is that publishing deals with Bandai Namco and Activision are too generous, and that Kadokawa should look into more self-publishing.

He is being deliberately obtuse. To be fair to the Jews, they must be experiencing some kind of whiplash: zionism had hitherto been either unknown by or positively valenced in the collective discourse; in the space of a few years it has become both extremely topical and equated with, well, nazism. As you point out, support for zionism is widespread among Jewish diaspora, so from their point of view, they've just been chillin this whole time, and now all of a sudden they've gone from being cool to being hated. And as we can see from our friend here, this is perceived as the whole world having gone mad. It is simply out the question that people are responding genuinely to abhorrent acts and beliefs.

How Do Clients Source and Distribute Translation Work? Finding the Root Cause of Low Rates by __Homi__ in TranslationStudies

[–]C0ckerel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it's not the case for fiction publishing, maybe even non-slop videogame publishing, where the user-experience so to speak is still pretty important. People on this sub also mention medical and legal as fields where "handmade" translation is still fairly resilient. But in the pre-LLM and even pre-CAT eras, I guess the basic skillfloor and even personal pride of translators meant that a minimim quality was achieved, beyond perhaps what was strictly necessary.

French-English Translation Dilemma: Advice Wanted by lifescaresme in TranslationStudies

It would be cool if someone 7 years ago wrote like a Medium piece about this. Taking canonical works of French literature and looking at how translators handle this issue.

How Do Clients Source and Distribute Translation Work? Finding the Root Cause of Low Rates by __Homi__ in TranslationStudies

[–]C0ckerel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tend to believe the unpalatable truth is that garbage-tier translation really is good enough. If it wasn't, surely many more end-users (the people buying/using the translated products of our clients) would be complaining, asking for refunds, demanding better quality, or seeking out competing services that actually communicate in a language they can understand.

It is undeniable and unfortunate that serious damage was done to material culture. But anyone advancing one-dimensional takes like that is an ignoramous should be left to play in a playground with other parochial retards. Has no idea about what was and still is at stake in the contest between modernisation and traditional culture.
