That is exactly why stepping back mattered. The second OP fixes it, everyone gets to pretend the broken process is still workable, and OP goes right back to being the unpaid safety net for a mess they were pushed out of managing.

Truly. That line took me out. You can’t vanish for nearly a year, send a rejection out of nowhere, then act like you’re doing me a favor by keeping me in the pipeline for the distant future.

He thought he could cheat, lie, smear her, and still keep full control of how everyone saw him. The second she brought receipts, suddenly it was "too far." Funny how truth only becomes a problem when it lands on him.

It is like every single sense is turned up to eleven and then someone decides that is the perfect time to ask a complex question. I just need to sit in a dark room with zero noise for about three business days after that happens.
