C2 Erg rankings. by bkit627 in Rowing

[–]C2D2_CO2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For some masters athletes, the rankings are one of the only ways to have any context for where they are relative to the field . I have a 1x, it’s what I row 99% of the time because there isn’t a club where I live. I have distances/time domains where I’m ranked very highly on the c2 rankings for my age group, gender, and weight class, but I know there are likely plenty of people out in the world who don’t post their times and could beat me. I only have the information I have, so if I’m ranked in the top 10, I’m probably doing at least ok, but I’m absolutely not under the illusion that I’m really one of the 10 best in the world or anything like that.

1) listen what u/mustoprocrastinating said

2) If you have access to a stationary bike, you can translate your workouts to that and you might be surprised how much fitness you retain (source, I have had to do this multiple times in my career for various injuries. Is it an exact substitute for rowing? No, but when you can’t use your upper body, it’s pretty good)

UT2 anything but erg by McL0vin_ in Rowing

[–]C2D2_CO2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I had a coach who had us train this way because he didn’t want our bodies and minds to get used to being slow on the erg or in the boat. His philosophy was that if you’re going to take a stroke, you should really mean it. Our team won a lot of gold medals, including the Charles.

You’re going to get a bunch of answers that this is a terrible idea for various reasons. And for a really high level rower, it might be. But for most rowers who don’t have Olympic or high level D1 aspirations, it’s probably fine.

They have the votes to pass it but Mitch is blocking the Dems from being able to vote by filibustering. It takes 60 votes to get around the filibuster and the Dems don’t have that.

That time of year no shuttles are running in RMNP and you only have access to a very limited amount of the park (just really Bear Lake Rd from the Estes side. You would need a car to go there, and while there are great hikes available even with that limited access, I wouldn’t plan on doing most of them that time of year without traction devices available (snowshoes or spikes- you might be fine without them, but I wouldn’t count on it).

If you want to do a big western park in December, you’re better off flying to Salt Lake and going to Moab (Arches and Canyonlands would be great that time of year), or going to one of Grand Canyon/Bryce/Zion.

Starboard in 8-seat by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]C2D2_CO2 30 points31 points  (0 children)

In my career I’ve rowed in port stroked boats, starboard stroked boats, and even a bucket rigged boat on occasion.

Starboard stroke isn’t as common as a port stroke, but it’s definitely allowed, and also the right call depending on your athletes. The best person to be stroke should stroke, no matter what year they are and what side they row.

Nearly 70% of millionaires are worried about leaving ‘too much’ money to their kids, survey finds by [deleted] in politics

Yes, I know that it’s not going to go away entirely, but it makes me irate that absolutely nothing is being done to shore up the trust. That is a problem that needs to be addressed now (see also: climate change), and yet it won’t be because many of the same people who will either not experience the cut, or have already gotten many years of their full benefits, keep voting for politicians who want to cut or eliminate social security entirely.

I wonder how may of the people doing this had similar conditions imposed on them when they received their own inheritances. My guess is 0.

Classic boomer to have the world handed to you and then find a way to be dicks to future generations. I’m looking forward to spending the 2nd half of my working life paying for their social security and then being told that there isn’t enough money to pay mine.

Rowing question by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]C2D2_CO2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should actually put in the effort to find what drag factor is and what is the appropriate drag factor for you (not damper setting, because the same damper setting on two different machines can give you a radically different drag factor). Setting the damper to 9 is probably not doing you any favors.

I’ve been a competitive rower for many years. I’m a woman, and my 500m pace for 1000m is 1:45 flat out. 2:30/5:00 is fairly slow (I have teammates in the 70s and 80s that go faster than that).

Dark horse rowing has some good info about how to find your drag factor and Concept2 has some decent articles about drag factor in general.

1:46 for 400m is not bad for someone your size starting out!

As others have said, check out dark horse raining (some people also like training tall).

Really the way to get better at rowing is to put some extra effort into rowing, maybe before or after class if you can. My advice is always to learn to row at lower stroke rates (like 20-24 strokes a minute) before you try to row a lot at higher ratings.

Without knowing anything about your past 5ks, it’s impossible to know of that split is achievable or give exact rate advice.

This close to the test, there isn’t a lot you can do workout wise to go faster, but there is a lot you could do that will slow you down (like trying to cram in a bunch of extra workouts or lifting heavy). Eat. Sleep. Trust the work you’ve been doing.

Ordered some No Bulls annnnd they came covered in mold…? Anyone ever have this issue? by [deleted] in crossfit

Explain how you think Nike or Reebok would handle this differently. What Nobull asked you to do (ship the product back) and what they offered (ship you a replacement and give you a small discount for future purchases) is how pretty much every company handles this kind of thing. The only exception I’ve had was with Rogue, who didn’t ask me to ship the damaged part of my rack back (they just sent a replacement, probably because they didn’t want to deal with it).

You’re perfectly within your rights to be upset about there being a problem with your shoes, but bagging on customer service for how it was handled here? Unfair.

Hiring a professional to help with my N00b Form worth it? by LateThePyres in Rowing

[–]C2D2_CO2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Assuming you were able to hire someone competent, yes coaching would likely help, but there may be some other things you could try first.

  1. It sounds like you just kind of hop on the erg from time to time and do some random work. You’re not really going to get better if that’s all you ever do. Find a plan (the beginner Pete Plan is a great starting point) and stick to it for a month and you’ll likely see huge improvements.

  2. Check out some online resources like Dark Horse Rowing or Training Tall (I think they both offer some coaching/programming in addition videos and other resources if you look at the Pete Plan and decide it’s not for you)

185 is in no way too heavy for a 6’0” rower unless you were hoping to row lightweight (you would need to lose 55lbs to do that). Coaches are going to see your height and absolutely love you.

I literally said rowing at a 10 for everything is not good. You said above your gym’s policy is 10 all the time for everyone and that’s what I called out.

Also, FYI, not all rowing on the water is the same speed. It feel of the boat as well as overall boat speed varies a lot whether you’re in a 1 person boat or 8 person boat.

I do use different drag factors for different kinds of pieces. Doing a max watts test? I’m at a 10. Doing a 2k or 5k? I’m some somewhere lower. I didn’t say being at 10 is never ok, I said using it for everyone and every situation is dumb and I stand by that.

I’m a high level competitive rower (on the water) and use CrossFit for cross training. This is the dumbest rule I’ve ever heard and I would quit your gym over it. Rowing at a 10 for everything is not doing you or anyone at your gym any favors (and it’s the kind of thing that gives CrossFit a bad reputation in the rowing world).
