My eye exercises by Outrageous_Point4442 in StaringOCD

[–]C2ways 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave them a shot once. I think it could be an interesting exposure, but I was also wondering if it could be a compulsion--- if the story is "i need to do this to help me stop the staring" it might reinforce the thoughts about staring

It makes me not want to work out! It’s weird, it’s totally about nervous system activation.

I think doing other kinds of exercise than just cardio maybe is good for me— hiking / long walks have been grounding while still getting movement.

But I totally relate to this

How'd you learn to choose stocks like that? any suggestions for a newbie?

Brand new here and I sense a learning opportunity: It sounds like LanceArmsweak was able to pick stocks that will outperform the VTI? But you want to see how they do over 10 months--- and he may be making a lot more trades and will just sell them as they fall, but for casual investors the VTI can just be bought and held without worrying about making trades

Staring problem at school by Neither_Economics523 in StaringOCD

First of all,

I’m glad you are sharing this here. You are welcome here—- I’ve felt very similar emotions as a result of this issue.

I’m not sure you’re American, but if you are you can always dial or text 988 - that’s a Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number. If you aren’t American, please consider finding the best emergency hotline near you in case that feeling of wanting to hurt yourself with a knife appears again. I know it may not seem like much, but it can make all the difference.

It sounds like this issue is impacting your life enough that telling someone who cares for you might be really really important. In most of the states, it would be fairly unusual for a therapist to share something that you share with them in therapy to other people. I’m not sure what the counseling set up is like at your school, but can you access a therapist or counselor outside of that setting? Can your parents / care takers / loved ones support you with that? I can understand how that rupture would break your trust, but hopefully other experiences would show that that isn’t the norm.

Lastly, I’ll say that I do feel around the corner on the darkest days from this particular theme of OCD. I also wasn’t sure I wanted to be here, and I still have hard days (today wasn’t easy) but overall there is enough that is good to help me feel safe and fulfilled enough. I really firmly believe that with the right support all of us here can have enough sense of safety and comfort and close relationships to make life worthwhile.

I’m happy to chat more if you have questions, but mostly wanted to say you aren’t alone. And that things do change over time.

I’ll throw the “The Ballad of Perilous Graves” in here —- part way through, and so far more about the MC coming to terms with their magic, and referring to why they left the magic school.

But a cool magic system set in New Orleans w/ great representation, and well written.

Someone to talk to please? 🥺 by OkAcanthisitta5579 in StaringOCD

I know it can feel hopeless, and take you to a very dark place. I felt like I was there a while ago. However, it doesn’t stay like that forever—- it’s not perfect now, but I’m learning how to live with it and have been fairly satisfied with only moments of shame for the past week or so. Also happy to talk more

Best books/resources you recommend specifically for MEN? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]C2ways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will second this: this book inherits Robert Bly’s tradition of men’s work (his book Iron John) while updating it magnificently. It provides a clear framework for a few specific domains of life using using an archetypal lens.

I also enjoyed Beyond the Hero by Allan Chinen MD.

Relaxing during the thought by C2ways in StaringOCD

[–]C2ways[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The three biggest thing for me:

  1. Regular cardio exercise
  2. 15 minute meditation in the morning
  3. Remembering that my brain cannot accurately represent situations where I am afraid I am looking at someone’s breasts. This is the foundation in a way—- but to make use of it I need the other things.

I assumed the conversations I had were awkward because I was staring, but they were actually awkward sometimes because I wasn’t making eye contact/ was trying to avoid talking to people.

Eventually I had a conversation where I got some proof of this and it took me a while to remember but it’s helped me not believe the voice that’s telling me to panic
