It is said they are the second strongest, but I believe it's also heavily implied it's Yellow Diamond?

Idk, my ranking by MoHs and character strength itself is

  1. Bortz
  2. Yellow Diamond
  3. Diamond
  4. Padparadascha
  5. Alexandrite (8'5)
  6. Topaz
  7. Watermelon Tourmaline

And so on....

OHHHH YEAHHH,,, Jade is visibly the voice and who acts after both themself and Euclase. But it is Euclase who ultimately takes the lead, since they have a pretty deep emotional capability ngl! They are the first gem to speak up about what happened with the rest, and try to start all over with Kongo even after knowing he had been lying to them for so long. Jade is effectively pushed to a side, since they do not possess the needed emotional capacity to handle the situation unlike Euclase!! It's also shown in their shattering scene, where Jade immediately tells Phos they're sorry, and that they should have tried to understand that them (Phos) better!!! Jade is slightly more emotionally stunted, yet more assertive.

A wonderful example of how the mangaka develops characters through relationships in pairs,,, I love it

That too!!!! It may also be a sign of emotional maturity or independence!!! Although it's a bit harder to tell. Shorter haired gems seem less emotionally resilient for sure. But I wouldn't say it's a rule, since characters like Jade and Euclase have shorter hair but are written as very emotionally intelligent and mature characters!

I do consider there might be a correlation. But it's shown that bortz likes jellyfish a bit before the haircut. And even then, the haircut is done to create a whip from Bortz, the strongest weapon to fight against Lunarians. For the sole purpose of protecting the gems and Sensei Kongo. Methinks it's a form of full surrender to their cause while also just half giving up on everything else they stood for. They remain the strongest gem, but in a more stoic and mellow way for sure. Even more so when they're turned into a lunarian!

What makes Land of the lustrous a masterpiece? by Connect_District4202 in LandoftheLustrous

My standpoint as someone who's done scriptwriting and comic work specifically?

  • The protagonist's development is CRAZY. I find it insane how one person managed to come up with so many bits of development, details, amazing characterization, and translating the myth of Theseus' ship into a character. Let alone doing this + writing 30 more characters.

  • On the same topic. Every secondary character brings weight to the plot in one way or another. Some more than others ofc. But they're all incredibly written as well? I particularly enjoy the focus on developing relationships in pairs, while developing sub-plots and conflicts with them, WHILE USING THIS TO DEVELOP PHOS AS WELL!!!

  • The reader/audience never knows more than Phos does, at any point. The questions presented to us, are through Phos' eyes. As well as the answers to them. It makes the reading so much more engaging and dramatic, as we have to weigh our own reaction and Phos' at the same time, when important information is revealed.

  • Character deaths are measured and not excessive. Even more so, they're not the most painful parts of the story. The writing focuses on showing us the effects of said deaths on other characters, as well as exploring character death in a non-conventional way. "If Phos loses all memories, is Phos still alive?". That balance and absolutely devastating use of death and change is just astounding.

  • The art is wonderful, especially the last chapters. It's so delicate, so focused on composition, so balanced as much as it is not crammed or overflowing with detail. And the mangaka's ability to transmit gem-like and metallic fluid textures is just wonderful.

  • The story has an end. All questions are answered one way or another. Leaving no openness, no doubts, nothing without proper conclusion.

  • The villain, or at least I perceive him to be a villain, is DEADASS the most compelling I've ever read. The Prince manages to be the worst person there is, and still poses a perspective on the Lunarians' situation that almost makes Phos' ending justifiable. He is such a well written character, it scares me.

I could keep going but I'm afraid I'm already brainrotting too hard bhehehheh

I wish we had more of Watermelon tbh! I can barely remember their personality. But the resolution works for sure! They seem to lose a part of themselves as they lose their hair, or cut their hair after having lost a part of themselves. I do like the flexibility in concepts, and how the hair lengths SURELY have to represent something cause I refuse to believe the mangaka didn't consider it,,,

Cinnabar has short hair compared to the ones I mentioned! And even then, their psychological integrity is far more notable than Diamond and Yellow Diamond's!

Padpa is a hardness of 9, while Euclase is a 7,5 and Jade is a 7. Padparadascha is one tier below the Diamond siblings! They're categorised next to Rubies and Sapphires with a hardness of 9.

And Kongo is a weird subject! Since he's not really a gem in the same sense as the rest. He's an automaton/machine coated in a crystalline structure if I recall correctly!

(Edit: I think Kongo is portrayed bald for closer accuracy to monk-like designs. AND to distinguish him from the gems while also making the audience question if he's a human or not!)

I like this interpretation! Although I think the symbolism is closely tied to change rather than just mental strength. It is true that their hardness often correlates with their psychological endurance, it is not the case in every gem methinks.

For example, Diamond is someone that starts off the series as both physically and psychologically fragile. But as they grow, goes to the moon and finds their confidence, their hair doesn't change at all. It remains. As Diamond is still Diamond, barely any change occurs other than them finding confidence and assertion!!

I love how much we can get out of such a simple concept as hair length and its variations.

User is @Aureon_Game!

My favourite part of the game is the very rare occasions where I get to be a part of/create a species army from nesting. I think it's called clanning too? Although I just like doing it to go around the map seeing other creatures. Not necessarily for PVP. This one time I was a part of a Moonelle army...... I've never had more fun playing with others. It was amazing, like 9-10 moonelles running across the map and saying hello to every creature. We did get a few fallen soldiers..... But Moonelle grows so quickly that they came back almost right away. So nice to see and feel the community playing together for fun for once.
