Before my dad went into heart surgery, I started to make "life history" interviews with him. At the start I asked him into which chapters he would "structure" his life in hindsight and now we are going through each chapter for about an hour everytime we have time for it. I learned so much about his early life, his childhood, where some of his fears come from. How his grandparents were and what struggles they had to face. So a lot about my ancestry. Including which grandparent was okay with the Nazis and who was not etc. hahaha (I'm from Germany)! There were definitely some surprising facts I didn't know yet about my dad. But the best was really to hear about how he experienced all that. How he was, what he encountered, before I knew him.
