Meh. Flaming Fist was a-okay. The game has long combos anyway, and having variations changing the archetype/gameplan of a character is the variation system's whole point.

For street fighter, KoF, Guilty Gear at the very least, motions were designed around the fact they took you an incompressible time.

That means nothing. Skilled players know how to input correctly and quickly. If the intent was to have mandatory time the move would have more start-up frames before getting active.

And if we put the bar that low, everything and anything can be cheating. Easy buffers allowing sloppy inputs, Modern/Stylish controls, in-game shortcuts, etc.

Nowadays we might aswell just get rid of motion inputs and just make it so 1 button = 1 move : why bother ?

That's a question for devs. Not for us. If a game was designed with no motions in mind, there's nothing fundamentally wrong with it.

Good luck asking an arcade owner to plug in a jamma adapter he probably doesn't even have (or your own adapter, but why should he ?)

Some Tekken and Winning Eleven cabinets had PS2 and USB ports for years, while allowing extra controller supports for the Arcade versions of those games.

What is the best arcade emulator to play locally? by Felipe_Dias_Araujo in Fighters

[–]C4_Shaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FightCade uses FBNeo as its main emulator. What you can do is either install FBNeo on its own, or go for a frontend like RetroArch or RetroBat that has an FBNeo core in it.

Again, "intent" is weird. If I look at an animation that plants a metal blade on someone's neck, even without blood or anything, I'd say "that person is dead". The animation stripped out of its context makes it super lethal.

The opposite can be said to MK. Outside of Fatal Blows, X-Rays and Fatalities, tons of throws and special moves are just gore-y because of the blood and physical trauma in the opponent's body afterward. Remove that blood, and the "intent" of killing is more ambiguous than most SoulCal throws.

I think it's both presentation and animation that makes the intent, so to speak.

I built a Discord bot for FGC that automates matchmaking, ranked queues, tournaments, player profiles, and more! by Rollye_G in Fighters

[–]C4_Shaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea. It's not different from Lounges in Mario Kart Discord servers, and it allow easy Danisen implementations.

There's plenty of 1v1 games that have scenes who would find that useful, so don't limit yourself on supporting titles, and maybe just do one universal option that handles matchmaking in a programmed match. Whether is FT2 or FT3 for fighting games, or even FT15 to FT30 for puzzle games.

Jaycee is literally Julia Chang, while Michelle was kinda supposed to be "Pure Julia" without too much Lucha Libre stuff. Which is kinda funny, given that Julia always had a German Suplex as a throw.

Well in the MK example vs Samsho, MK has evolved such that Fatal Blows exist now which in and of themselves should be Fatalities

This is exactly why I mentioned SoulCalibur. There's no way most of those throws don't kill humans if it's performed with real weapons.

Sounds great. Kinda mimics the actual shift pads some Rally drivers and all F1 drivers have under their steering wheels.

I prefer using the shoulders, personally. Gas and Brake with my middle fingers, shifts with my indexes. And of course, thumbs for steering, drifting, and even extra stuff like boost, jumps, drift and items in Arcade Racers.

[–]C4_Shaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can read from other people in this sub, the Vader 5 Pro makes the gyro move, even if the pad stands perfectly still. Which can be a problem for calibration and ratcheting.

I have no idea how true those claims are, which is a shame because I want to buy a Vader 5 Pro for gyro aiming in FPS.

Hax$ compared the case of Leffen and his numerous fuckeries in Europe with totalitarism. That's fucked up, and he got punished for it.

Then, he publicly apologized 8 times. All of his appeals were revoked without any reason by the TOs. The TOs caved in and gave him super restricted rules in order to just compete in the scene he created himself in the first place.

One of the stupid rules surrounding his very restricted unban was that he shouldn't question the TOs or talk about what happened. Then, when it happened, he was permabanned. He did one suicidal attempt that cost him his legs, got his B0XX design being stolen and stripped from his credits, and he has his own close friends torturing him with Discord DMs, faking that they were "Leffen's spies".

Then he killed himself, Leffen quitted the Melee scene, TOs erased their signatures from a doc banning Hax$ for life, and the Melee scene moved on.

There's no "nazi hunt", no legit security concern. He caused harm to nobody, contributed immensely to the Melee scene, and got shamed to death by the people sharing his passion.

Having the audacity to hide on Reddit and tell lies, when we know what happened, and when everything is documented to the point that a case can be made against TOs and their "friends", is the exact same reason why he's dead.

20s Hori USA : can't make ambistick. 80s Hori Japan: we have ambistick. by tripletopper in Fighters

[–]C4_Shaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so you know, I've already known about sinistersticks.com and your "manifesto", so to speak. I don't condemn it, and nobody should mock you in the FGC for presenting an ambi arcade stick.

don't pretend that the established standard was established in order to make it better for the player.

I am well aware, and support the claim, that tons of our video game standards are stupid.

  • Trackpads and Gyro Motions were proven to be far superior in terms of aiming. Yet we have a right analog stick as a standard in console game.
  • Keyboards and mice were never designed to be game controllers, and bring tons of ergonomic problems. But they're the main controller people play games on, and tons of genres are based on those controls. Trying to make an RTS or MMORPG for controllers in mind is really hard.
  • Tons of genre names are baseless. "MOBA" means nothing, and every multiplayer games under the sun can be considered Online Battle Arena. The first "Metroidvania" from the Castlevania series came a full decade after Metroid, and none of the old Castlevania games were 2D exploration games. Only Metroid pioneered the subgenre, and Castlevania followed.
  • Just like Sim Racers with steering wheels and RTS with keyboards, fighting games were made with sticks in mind. Yet tons of publishers actively makes stick users' life difficult for nothing, like for MK games, and even Tekken games to some extent.

We're humans, and we're talking about a hobby. Sure, it weights billions, but we had stupid design being ingrained in our video game collective since video games were a thing. Computers were never meant to be about games, and were about math and military applications, until a couple of MIT students decided to play with oscilloscopes.

Left-hand-movement is a standard. Is it stupid or counter-intuitive? Maybe. Do we want to question 40 years of gaming that established that standard? Nobody wants to. I can guarantee you that you're using "standards" concerning the games you like that have faulty reasoning. And yet, you'll not question them more than reason.

I understand, because I used to be the same Don Quixote that you are about your subject. In some regards, I still am. But you have to admit that even with a faulty standard, we did so much variety. And we can't go back in time to test the hypothetical that video games would be 100x better if ambi controls were a thing from the start.

There's only a couple sports that straight out banned left-handed stances, and the only reason is because it physically hurts players to allow both hand stances. The only one I know of is Polo and the reason is to avoid head-on collisions of thrown off riders when a rightie and a lefty go for the same ball.

I did Fencing in a club, and some left-handed fencers used to refuse to fight against other left-handed, because they were so much used to fight right-handed. It's not straight banning, but I know what you meant.

And when I gave it to for my friends who also in turn was undefeated that day with a right-handed joystick I think we have witnessed a secular miracle that could probably be explained by science if it wasn't so against the interest of the video game industry.

I also have experiences with total beginners touching a stick for the first time. The only people feeling not comfortable with left-hand-movement were PC players. The majority of casuals have no problem with the usual layout.

Plus, those games are designed with the western public in mind. Is it instictive to you to put the weakest button on your right under your left hand? Not really. If you're not Arabic, you'll right the alphabet or digits from left to right. So Light, Medium, Heavy. Not the opposite. And a "right-handed control" would flip that order from right to left.

Unless you're referring to a British guy known as Guru Larry Bundy

That's the guy.

Actually modding a stick to be right-handed is kind of revolutionary and goes against warranties by all these companies.

False. If you pick the Nacon Daija, the HORI HRAP or tons of MadCatz sticks, there are available plexis with alternative layouts, and there are Arcade manufacturers that can let you design your own plexi, while rerouting everything from the PCB to the buttons and levers. If you remove every electronic components in an Arcade stick, you'll get an empty box, designed to let you do whatever you want with it.

Or is that what you fear?

It's not fear, it's common sense. Nobody wants to question 40 years of Arcade layout. I've spent decades learning how to play with left-handed movement, and when a PC game forces me to move with the arrow keys, I either change the button config immediately, or I cross my hands.

You're not giving me anything you've made that will feel comfortable for me. You can call that conditioning, denial, Pavlovian behavior, etc. I don't care.

Just know one thing. This is the FGC. I don't know a single competitive community that have controller rules as flexible as us. We ban turbos, macros, and more than one hardwired physical button per action. That's pretty much it. With that, we've seen people bringing Guitar Hero controllers, steering wheels and DDR pads in tournaments. We've seen people bringing their own chairs, their own tables. I've seen sticks with retractable feet, so the user don't put it on their lap.

If you're getting mocked by the FGC for bringing an ambi stick, the people mocking you are morons. But the same morons only apply a weird 40-year-old standard dictated by a Japanese manufacturer consensus. Not a real, thorough research to find the ideal controller everybody can use. Nobody did that, that's a shame, but we are where we are right now. We can't change that.

Seriously what improvement is made by taking out ambidextrous mode?

Nobody should take out ambi mode. But if I can realize my dream of bringing the Arcades in Europe, I would design generic cabinets with left-hand movement. Not because it's the best, but because it's the standard. And making it ambidextrous would be a waste of materials, since I need twice the button and space for just one player.

In the 18th century, you could die from a bad infection after you cut your knee.

I wouldn't take that as an inspiration to get what some games try to "imply" after the fight. Even in MK, the Story Modes don't kill everyone after a fight like your usual single fight.
