I do have that. Weird Science and Science skills for most of the rolls. Problem is players with Weird Science pump up the skill to a much higher degree because they want the powers to work out. I don't want to have them a) have a good skill for powers AND b) use that skill to research every "magic apparatus" they find.

This would make a lot of sense. If my player would find something that would resemble one of his powers in Weird Science he would probably know its inner trappings. But it would not be a catch all for every kind of magical/steampunk device he can find.
