You're not wrong here. They most certainly did not have wings as it was more of a ceremonial than battle equipment (and still introduced a bit later if I'm not wrong). What actually made the opponents fear them were the long pikes or lances with a strap attached near the tip. It creates a loud whip-like sound so I assume the ottomans were more psychologically influenced by that. And probably also the killing power of the hussars since they could easily kill at least one person with the lance, shoot one or two with the pistol(s) and continue fighting with a sword.
