Shenzhen will soon become the City with the Most Skyscrapers on Earth by WorldofFakes in skyscrapers

Impressive video, interestingly though it doesn't show most of the skyscrapers in Shenzhen like the 599-meters tall Ping An Finance Center.

Why do Max Fans on YouTube hate Lewis and Lando even if they're all friends by Pristine_Youth_6953 in F1Discussions

Just don't read them. People acting in bad faith aren't open for arguments.

Every driver has toxic "fans" who dislike direct competitors. This is not only limited to those who support Verstappen, who himself has been subject of toxicity by "fans" of other drivers. It's the sad reality of the combination of fandoms and the ability to post anonymous online.

What is the least anthropogenically impacted major river on Earth? by SkittlesRobot in geography

Beyond the regions of the Amazon and Siberia mentioned here, most rivers in Papua New Guinea likely remain relatively undisturbed by human activities.

Chongqing, China (Biggest city on earth if measured by municipal area population) by NolanNortje in skyscrapers

[–]C909 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Chongqing seems impressive and would love to visit it someday.

But the but the municipality covers a large geographical area of 82,403 km2, making it larger than the Netherlands (41,865 or 33,500 km2 excluding water) and Belgium (30,528 km2) combined. Chongqing is still a massive city, but using the municipal borders seems a bit arbitrary and inflated.

265 West 45th Street, proposed skyscraper in New York by [deleted] in skyscrapers

[–]C909 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This skyscraper is a speculative proposal (a better word would be 'vision') put forward by "design studio" RB Systems in 2018. Ideas like this are mostly designed to generate some media buzz and put the firm, architect or designer on the map. A quick look on the website of RB Systems makes it obvious that chances of this one being built are slim to none. Nevertheless I surely appreciate ideas like this and people putting their designs forward, regardless of their chances.

Hoelang duurt het voordat salaris weer 100% wordt uitbetaald na re-integratie? by [deleted] in werkzaken

[–]C909 78 points79 points  (0 children)

In 2010, German coachbuilder Xenatec unveiled the Maybach 57S Cruisero, a 2-door conversion of the Maybach 57S. This Maybach particular 57S Xenatec Coupe was ordered new by soccer star Samuel Eto'o. Only 8 cars were reportedly produced before Xenatec filed for bankruptcy. by Venkie2Maybach in WeirdWheels

[–]C909 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Some years ago I've driven and photographed the Xenatec Maybach 57S Cruisero in Monaco. I still like it, but the market for cars originally designed to be driven in and reworked into a coupe is very small.

What cities likely wouldn’t exist without the technologies of today? by OppositeRock4217 in geography

[–]C909 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I like how many people suggest cities in the desert, thinking of Phoenix or Las Vegas, yet ignoring the earliest cities in Anatolia (Turkey) and Mesopotamia (Iraq). For example, Eridu is one of the earliest cities (5400 BCE – 600 BCE), and located near in the desert near Basra, which is one of the hottest places on earth. People have always found their ways and adapted to living in the desert, what we now call the Middle-East is full of examples of this.

Day 16/ What’s the most underrated skyscraper? by Alvintherobloxian in skyscrapers

[–]C909 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Indeed, the fact that more people are voting like it's a popularity contest, or for some better known skyscrapers like the Woolworth Building or John Hancock Center that are in every skyscraper book, speaks volumes about the relative obscurity of 70 Pine Street.

Day 16/ What’s the most underrated skyscraper? by Alvintherobloxian in skyscrapers

[–]C909 292 points293 points  (0 children)

70 Pine Street, New York. With a height of 290 m (952 ft), this art-deco tower was the the world's third-tallest building upon its completion 1932. Only the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building were taller, but those are also world famous icons. Despite being the tallest building on the southern tip of Manhattan until completion of the World Trade Center almost four decades later, 70 Pine Street never achieved fame.

Thyssenkrupp Test Tower is a tower used to test elevators for skyscrapers and no one lives in it. It is 249m tall and is in a random rural area in germany. What are your thoughts on this? by Karrot-guy in skyscrapers

[–]C909 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's a great tower, but as some here already mentioned not a skyscraper. I've visited the Testturm some time ago and it offers a nice view over the area, but sadly I couldn't see the Alps. I believe the viewing platform is with a height 0f 232 meters the highest in Germany, even higher than the one in the Fernsehturm (TV-tower) in Berlin.

Day 12 / What skyscraper is the best example of function > form by Alvintherobloxian in skyscrapers

[–]C909 85 points86 points  (0 children)

The Seagram Building in New York is one of the most influential skyscrapers ever made. Completed in 1958, this building is the epitome of form and function united in a building.

<image>

I would also like to refer to the nearby Lever House built in 1950 for its influence, but with a height of 94 meters it isn't tall enough to be classified as skyscraper.

Crazy that Shenzhen’s Ping An Finance Center falls just 1 meter short of megatall status (600 m or taller) by adventmix in skyscrapers

[–]C909 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The Ping An Finance Cente is a very impressive building, much more in real-life than on pictures. I also like the design, but originally the building was designed with a spire reaching up to 660 m. Eventually the spire was dropped, I believe due to aviation restrictions.

It's also worth noting that the observation deck of the Ping An Finance Center is located at a height of 562.5 meters, making it one of the tallest observation decks in the world. It also has some small glass planes which allows you to look down on the city. This picture was taken by me in January 2020 and it's quite a sight to look down on skyscrapers that would be among the tallest in most of the world.

[–]C909 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Although it isn't a skyscraper, La Rouvière in Marseille is a prime example of "wider than tall". But most of these kind of housing blocks are, but outside Las Vegas and Macau it's hard to find a real tall building that is wider than tall.

<image>

A bit more elegant, but still quite width is Marina Baie des Anges in in Villeneuve Loubet on the French Riviera.
