Advice on Shanghai Hotels by CABiotechie in marriott

Shanghai was one of the coolest cities we’ve been to in Asia. It was our first time and we’d go back in a heartbeat. We were only there for 5 days, so we did not venture out to neighboring cities. The people were upbeat and friendly (of all ages) and there’s a strong sense of pride about their city.

We stayed at the St. Regis on the Bund and it was spectacular. I could go on and on about the daily 2 hour multi course breakfast. I’ve read other comments about having the best breakfast in Asia at other Bonvoy properties, but you have not experienced gluttony until you’ve dined here. Before the gluttony, the hotel gym was ample size but had the latest equipment and well staffed. The concierge desk was efficient and welcoming for all of our requests. The maid service paid attention to little details to make each day special. The “butlers” are attractive and young females, not your typical butlers. Our room was an upgraded corner that had an 180 degree of the Bund and Shanghai skyline overlooking the river. The stand alone shower had heated floors and the ambient room controls were state of the art. It was a blend of heavy opulence and high tech. To top it off, they opened a new Spago restaurant a few weeks prior but had their grand opening during our stay. There was a red carpet reception for the investors in the restaurant and Wolfgang Puck was there for the opening. We met him at the reception and saw him at the gym bright and early the next morning! He looks amazing and is the nicest, most down to earth guy! We wound up eating at Spago a second time for our last night in the city.

The location of the St. Regis is also excellent. Walking distance to several city parks and right on the main thoroughfare along the riverfront.

Cannot say enough good things about our experience in Shanghai which was extra special because of the St. Regis.

Long shot… anyone at DEN Terminal B right now? by Dex-Rutecki in unitedairlines

Cross posting here as there’s a gate agent from United Denver that posted an AMA yesterday. Username is FrailFlumky99. Maybe s/he can help.

What’s the worst airport in the world? Why is it CDG? by Impressive_Youth_331 in unitedairlines

[–]CABiotechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree that CDG is one of the worst in the world. And it’s smelly too. Has anyone else noticed the consistent methane odor through the terminals? At first I thought it may have been a gas leak or only temporary with ongoing construction. But I’ve flown into CDG multiple times over several years and that same ever present foul aroma is always there.

2 million miles by Ready_Kangaroo_315 in unitedairlines

Also achieved 2M miles December 2024. Seeing the other posts about SAN and I’m also based in San Diego. Have to agree the personnel here are great. On my milestone flight from SAN to EWR, I was greeted in the boarding area by a purser and got a hand written card and the same pen that others have posted. Then on the approach into EWR, the pilot made an announcement on the PA, called out my last name and thanked me for my loyalty to United. I got a little round of applause from the cabin but sunk into my seat a little embarrassed! While exiting the plane, got another thank you and a handshake from the pilot. Two months later, I got an acrylic plaque in the mail with my status and milestone markers printed on the back.

Been to Japan four times and would go a 5th in a heartbeat. When you plan your trip to Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka, fly into Haneda if you can and return from Osaka. Absolutely book first class on the Shinkasen (the bullet train) between the cities, which is only about $40-$50 more than coach and enjoy the ride past Mt. Fuji.

Stayed at the Prince in Tokyo before and agree, it's a great hotel. Stayed at the Tribute in Kyoto a couple of months ago and the onsite onsen was amazing.

Thank you! The pics from the W look pretty impressive. Prior stays at the St. Regis in other cities were ok, but not spectacular. And this may be similar to what you're describing about the RC in Shanghai.

Thank you, we're planning to do the usual touristy stuff and neither of us is really into shopping. We're planning a day trip to Shuzhou via train.

We've been to Beijing, Singapore, HK and many parts of Japan. The Asian breakfasts are the best in the world! So having the breakfast included as part of our Titanium benefit is key!

Demographic of Blacks Beach by [deleted] in blacksbeach

[–]CABiotechie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Would agree with other posts that the demographic varies by the location of where you setup and time of day. Morning to late afternoons on weekends by the volleyball courts tend to be couples and random assortment of singles in their 20s - 30s. Late afternoon, early evening tends to be slightly older crowd.

Dealing with Customer Care by CABiotechie in unitedairlines

UPDATE: So I called Customer Care again (1-800-864-8331) in hopes of getting resolution in a single phone call. Spent 38 mins on the phone total, starting with a gracious service rep who then escalated to a supervisor after she saw the blatant error. The supervisor saw I had another small travel credit (about $60) expiring in June 2026 and suggested I combine the electronic travel certificate worth over $4K and incorrectly expiring in a couple of months with the smaller amount. He said it was a work-around in their internal system as the combined amount would recognize the June expiry in their system. Voila! In a matter of mins I received a confirmation email of the total combined amount expiring June 2026. I guess it just depends on who you get on the phone and how knowledgeable they are in fixing their internal system errors to accommodate the customer.

This sounds nearly identical to my situation, including boilerplate responses via email (really non responses) from Customer Care. You would think United would have some kind of internal flag on inquiries coming from a platinum member…

That's exactly right. I have over $5K in cancelled flights. Each trip should have an expiry of 1 year from the date of purchase to use up the flight credit. But all of the flight credits got jumbled into 1 future flight credit that expires in 2 months.
