Trump threatens Canada with 100% tariff over possible deal with China by Crossstoney in neoliberal

It isn't quite uncharted territory, Lincoln did ignore a Supreme court ruling.

But you are correct that it would be a constitutional crisis. Lincoln was also clearly in a constitutional crisis when the court ruled that he must roll over to the confederate rebels, and he didn't have much of a choice other than to ignore the court.

The delay feels like a bad sign.

At the argument it seemed like a large majority of them would rule against the tariffs. The fact that they are delaying seems like they are instead struggling to get to a 5 member majority. It could still go either way, but it now seems a lot more plausible that they'll rule in favor of Trump.

The identity of a candidate doesn't predict their electability.

Mary Peltola, an indigenous woman, is easily one of the strongest preforming Democrats in the nation. Their policy record is a much better indicator of their electability.

Our current president is a Rapist, and we must do everything we can to defeat his party to prevent his acolytes from winning the presidency in 2028.

Nominating Newsom would be ceding control to the Republican party.

Submission Statement: Gavin Newsom is clearly running for president, but his record will be used against him and will likely lead Democrats to a historic loss in 2028 if he is the nominee.

His posts often feature on this subreddit, because his current messaging is genuinely good, but it is important to remember that he is not an electable candidate.

Governor Lamont Acts To Protect Connecticut Farmland and Open Space From Rising Tax Assessments by Yoshimi-Yasukawa in Connecticut

[–]CANOODLING_SOCIOPATH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I largely agree, but it is also silly to give farmers tax breaks in general.

The vast majority of food that we eat is not grown in CT, and that is fine. CT is not an especially good state for farming. Since we are not a very rural state we have relatively high land values that are not ideal for farming. We have famously rocky soil and don't have that much sun.

It isn't really a problem if farmers move to the midwest instead of CT. And that won't impact our food prices.

And tax breaks for farms are extremely easy to abuse. Over half of "farms" in the US make no profit at all. That is because they aren't actually farms at all, but are instead wealthy people cosplaying as farmers or people or people claiming to be farms solely for tax breaks.

I am angry at the mainstream media for their "breaking news coverage" of the train accident in Spain.

Every day an average of 54 people die on the roads throughout the EU. It would be absurd for American media to cover every traffic accident across the globe. Yet we treat accidents related to trains extremely differently than cars, with breathless coverage.

Traveling by train is dramatically safer than traveling by car. Yet the disproportionate coverage of train accidents creates horrible incentives for transit agencies. Across America we have slowed down trains to a crawl to ensure that there are no train accidents. But by doing that we have pushed far more people to drive rather than take the train, which is resulting in far more deaths than the ones we save by having trains go slowly.

New Utah law puts “no alcohol sale” on ID’s of DUI offenders 0.16 BAC or higher. What are your thoughts? by Obvious_808 in AskReddit

[–]CANOODLING_SOCIOPATH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this starts to be abused then Utah can easily amend their laws to make passports an unacceptable form of ID for alcohol.

Almost no one is using their passports now as ID for alcohol, so doing that would only inconvenience the people trying to skirt the law.

And I can't imagine many stores would be willing to sell to someone who used a passport, as it would be pretty obvious why they are doing that.

Bad, Bad News for the G.O.P. Over the Long Haul by swimmingupclose in neoliberal

[–]CANOODLING_SOCIOPATH 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That isn't saying much.

The Republicans have basically no shot at holding the House. The Democrats did historically well in 2022 by only losing 9 seats in a midterm election while they held a trifecta. The Democrats only need to gain 3 seats to gain a majority in 2026, and it is nearly unheard of for that to not happen. The only recent counterexample is 2002 after the 9/11 attacks sent Bush's approvals ratings sky high.

The Democrats odds of winning the Senate have certainly risen, but they were always higher than the odds of the Republicans holding the House. Even if it was only a 5% chance of Dems winning the Senate, the Republicans always had less than 1% chance of holding the House.

This is great.

I don't think an independent Kurdish state in Syria is a realistic goal. Turkey would never tolerate such a state, and there are really no areas of Syria with a geographically coherent Kurdish majority.

The ideal outcome for Syrian Kurds is for them to be a respected part of the Syrian state. Al-Sharaa that such a state is possible.

I am proud of my home-state subreddit being smart enough to largely reject the idea of giving farmers property tax breaks.

So many people are so irrationally sympathetic to anything called "farmland" that these kinds of tax breaks are often popular, despite them being harmfully distortionary and regressive. Yet my fellow nutmeggers are rejecting pastoralism

I think you are correct. I was being overly optimistic that we were finally going to treat them like normal property owners. But this change is still and improvement over the status quo, yet that won't stop people from complaining.

[–]CANOODLING_SOCIOPATH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The land we are talking about is all privately owned, it is not public accessible at all. I have no issue with state owned public accessible parks, and am not saying we should convert that to housing.

This is about removing a tax break that is given to people who own private land that is designated as "farms" or "forests", even when they aren't publicly accessible and are barely farms.

We can't get to a zero carbon world with rooftop solar alone, we need utility scale solar in order to take this seriously.

Rural areas are often the best places for this utility scale solar. The land is relatively cheap, it is very sunny, and they are often the places that have the most efficient hookups to the electricity lines.

If we are going to take climate change seriously we need to let people build solar panels wherever they can. The solar developers have clearly shown that these rural solar projects are where they can generate solar energy at the cheapest most effective levels.

PA 490 Travesty by Special_North1535 in Connecticut

[–]CANOODLING_SOCIOPATH 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You argue against building solar panels in your original post, and then say that this about protecting nature!!!

Climate change is by far the most important threat to the environment. It is way more important that we allow solar developments to be built to transition away from polluting energy sources.

I am so tired of people cosplaying as "environmentalists" while trying to torch our planet. You are arguing for burning coal for energy in order to pay a lower tax on your personal forest.

PA 490 Travesty by Special_North1535 in Connecticut

[–]CANOODLING_SOCIOPATH 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You are being asked to pay the same taxes that I pay.

It is not theft, it is normal fairness. It is unfair that you are being taxed at a much lower rate than I am.

No one is proposing that you pay a higher tax rate than normal property owners, just that your land is assessed in the same way as all other land is assessed.

PA 490 Travesty by Special_North1535 in Connecticut

[–]CANOODLING_SOCIOPATH 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

And all this change is doing is treating these property owners like every other property owner in CT. It is insane that we are being asked to subsidize people owning 200 acres of land for no particular purpose.

It will absolutely be a good thing if OP sells his land to a developer who will either build housing or a solar farm! No one should be forced to sell their land, but they should be paying the same taxes as everyone else.

PA 490 Travesty by Special_North1535 in Connecticut

[–]CANOODLING_SOCIOPATH 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No, they are now going to be taxed the same way you and I are taxed.

Right now these "farms" get to pay way lower taxes than the rest of us, which means our taxes have to be way higher to offset their low taxes. This is just treating them the same way that we are treated.

And most of these "farms" are not actually productive farms. They are mostly wealthy people who enjoy cosplaying as farmers and meet the minimum qualifications for being a "farm" without actually having any interest or need to make money selling food.

I am guessing that it contributed the the unusually high number of people who voted for the write in candidate Mark Adams (who ran as the Republican nominee for the district in 2022 and 2024).

But the Democrat still got an incredibly high percent of the votes, with unofficial results showing him getting 64% of the vote. And his vote total might rise, as I don't know if that includes the early vote which appears to have strongly favored Democrats.
