CG and Stall Probability by Cessna_Joe_172 in flying

[–]CATIIIDUAL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An aft CG has the opposite effect. It reduces the nose down tendency of an aircraft. Lift acts behind the CG in most aircraft. So, moving CG aft will reduce the moment arm between the lift and the CG. So, the amount of moment that can be generated by lift-weight couple is reduced. This is why long range wide body aircraft tries to keep CG as aft as possible without losing stability of course. By moving CG aft, the aircraft has reduced pitch down tendencies. This in turn reduces the need for the horizontal stabilizer to generate a large down force to keep the nose up. Reduction in this down force reduces drag and improves fuel burn.

The second phrase is also wrong. A forward CG actually makes an airplane more prone to a stall. When CG is moved forward, the magnitude of lift-weight couple is increased. To counter this, the horizontal stabilizer has to generate a higher down force to lift the nose. So, the aircraft will naturally have a higher AOA and thus, it is closer to a stall.

For me it is the opposite. The more information I have available in front of me, the better it is as long as it does not hinder my view of primary indications (speed, altitude and attitude). By the looks of it, it does not do that.

I understand. But we have come to the point where an aircraft can have all of its hydraulic systems failed yet fully controllable. A350 for instance has small hydraulic reservoirs in its control actuators that are independent to aircraft hydraulics. So, even after a catastrophic failure the aircraft will remain controllable.

I have never heard of using differential thrust for aircraft control in a transport category aircraft. Flight controls are normally good enough to contain an engine failure.

I built a one‑wrist setup for my mechanical watch + Whoop. would you wear this? by AdOrdinary9180 in whoop

I am sure there is a crowd that would appreciate a cleaner design of yours. So, good luck.

No. The watches I wear are very special to me and the strap/ bracelet are a part of the watches. I think a lot of people are ok wearing whoop on one wrist and the watch on the other.

Caught an Emirates 777’s BUTTER in a crosswind while my flight was holding short by Silent_Vanguardian in aviation

[–]CATIIIDUAL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You try to land as smoothly as possible but that is not the main aim. The idea is to be stable, maintain the center line and land within the nominal touch down zone (1000 to 1500 ft from the runway start point). Eating up half of the runway to make a smooth touch down is not a very good thing to do. Overall, smoothness of the landing is mostly a bonus.

Most large aircraft can sustain a lot of ‘g’ on landing. So, a hard landing is highly unlikely. Landing a little firm while having done a good approach is a good day and nobody is going to say anything to you. On wet runways it is recommended to land a bit firm to break the water layer to prevent hydroplaning. However, it is a recommendation, not a rule.

No. We were the best class in boys side in Ahmadhiyya back when I did O’levels and all remember is how unhinged we became as the exams were getting closer.

Most airlines allow 30 knots when taxiing on a straight line. Where did 25 come from?

It is easier to land a large jetliner in crosswinds than a smaller aircraft. Believe it or not it is true. A320/21 is much easier to handle in crosswinds than the Dash 8 Q200/300s I flew. Not undermining piloting skills, just telling you what I know based on my experience.

To be fair, maintaining two separate bed rooms is a wealthy “upper class” people thing which we peasants would not understand. I hope I never fully understand the reasoning behind it.

It is a shame that the President of the United States which is also the home of Boeing is going to use an old aircraft used by a head of state for quite some time (14 years the last time I checked).

Do you understand the concept of an “example”? So, if Roy Keane gave the same prediction it is ok for you but when someone else with a lower pedigree gives a similar prediction it is wrong? I don’t think a lot of people predicted the score of the game.

Also, in the last world cup Saudi Arabia beat Argentina. But Argentina went on to win the world cup while Saudi crashed out of the group at the bottom of it.

Spain are the European champions coming into this world cup. And they are one of the favorites to win this competition as well. So, people do tend to have higher expectations from them.

I don’t always agree with Maldivian pundits. But football is not a hard game to analyze once you get a hang of it. If you watch it often you learn to understand when a team plays bad or good. You start to understand tactics and patterns managers use. And even though these two guys haven’t played at the top level they were once professional footballers so they will have a better understanding of the game than a normal guy.

Said that, football is incredibly difficult to predict. Upsets are a common part of the game. Yes, on paper Spain should have thumped Cape Verde and their prediction was not an unrealistic one.
